Horror Movies from the good old times...

Post by gbaplayer »

Hey everybody,

this thread is for discussions about the horror movies from the good old times (20s to 00s).
Which are your favorites and why? Which movies can you recommend?

I really like the classics like Re-Animator, Bride of Re-Animator, The Fly, The Blob, The Thing, Friday the 13th, Pet Semetary, Poltergeist, Day of the Dead, Evil Dead but also lesser known ones as Society or Dance of the Demons.

Depends what you mean by horror.

I'll mention a few of mine, but they come in all shape and sizes.

Evil Dead/2/Army of Darkness
Return of the Living Dead
The Ring
House 2 (House movies are different stories for each one so no continuation, more comedy than horror)
The People Under the Stairs
Battle Royale
The Thing
Scream
Saw
Train to Busan
Dawn of the Dead (both are quite good, but the original is better I think)
Nightmare on Elm Street 1 and 3.
The Babadook
REC
Let the Right one in
The Descent
The Mist
The Cabin in the woods
Final Destination
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Most of those are not from 1990 to 2000. The "good old times" would be the 70s to 80s for Horror in my book.

For horror, we will be talking for many years to come - I have a hell of a lot of horror films and I love the genre :)

I tend to categorise horror by sub-genre, for example, I have an occult horror section and then a satanic horror section and I have one just for Troma films and one just for Zombie films.

You have just touched on an issue namely that no one knows the German titles: "Dance of the Demons" is actually "Demon Wind" which is hilarious and has that line "...it's safer in the house..' :D As a general rule it is usually easier to use the original title and if not that then the english title. Case in point: everyone knows the Evil Dead but very few know "Tanz der Teufel".

Have you worked out what type of sub-genre you tend to like? If you have I may be able to come up with some films you may not have seen yet ;)

I'm very fond of this one. Its three sequels aren't too bad, especially by horror series standards, but I prefer to watch it in a stand-alone frame of mind. Unless you absolutely detest found footage (and even then, the lean runtime flies past), it's a great, brutal little low-tech Death Dungeon/Fast Zombies movie. The US remake "Quarantine" isn't awful, but its lead actress is nowhere as endearing and it chops out an excellent twist in the tale. Decent curio.

To fit the thread's timeframe, Demons/Demoni is basically REC's 80s inspiration - some decent practicals, same compulsive premise of being trapped in tight confines with rabid monstrosities, and (unlike REC) a nice humorous streak amidst the mortal terror (the most sleazily unsympathetic 80s punk cannon fodder ever, and more importantly, Tony The Pimp! :D "SMASH EVERYTHING").

From my recent horror viewings, I'd not quite recommend Lucio Fulci's informal "Gates of Hell trilogy." It sounds amazing on paper, given his talent for imagery, and they manage a nightmarish air of inevitability on occasion. Wayyy too much dead time with boring people to be worth it, though. The Beyond is the least comprehensible, and therefore the best, with a certain late scene of truly moving bleakness. City of the Living Dead has a similar scattering of cool setpieces, but the underlying movie is relatively normal and dull zombie fare. I liked his Zombi 2 better. House By The Cemetary is outright bad, starring very silly adults and one seriously fugly Superdeformed Macaulay Culkin-lookin' kid actor named BOB. Bob! Booob! <- you'll hear that a lot!

Gripping horror mystery:

Oof. Here's some meaty practical FX to compensate. Poltergeist ain't much on the horror scale but it's got some things.

in order:
Ringu
Whispering Corridors 2
Hausu
Godzilla (1954)
Audition
Tesis
Cure
Gamera 3
Misery
Tetsuo: The Iron Man
(Alien & The Thing are a given)

Most of my favorite horror movies came out post-2000. There are still several classics I haven't seen though.

I just mentioned some movies that came to my mind. :)

Of course the 70s also had some great movies like Deathdream.
With Dance of the Demons i mean Demons 1 + 2 (that should be the american title) from Dario Argento/Lamberto Bava.

I especially like haunted house and zombie movies.

I have not seen Deathdream but will look into it if you recommend it.

Ah, Demons 1 + 2 and they shot some scenes at Wittenbergplatz I think. Tbh I was not impressed with either of those films. Argento suffers from being able to organise well and to make it coherent I feel but visually his films look decent.

My favourite film with Argento's involvement is actually The Sect with Michelle Soavi directing and Argento writing.

I think that occult and satanic horror reached the pinnacle in the 70s.

I need to find a good copy of Suspiria. I heard the blue ray fucked up the colour saturation or something, so the dvd edition is better.

Perhaps the most coherent of the Three Witches Films he did. Nice lighting but to me it is highly overrated all in all. Sometimes it is an idea to try to get hold of the Laserdisc too for visual difference.

Along the lines of Re-Animator/Brain Dead black comedy horror, I really like Hollywood Mortuary. Knowingly trash-tier production, lots of deranged antics. Fading 1930s horror movie auteur goes nuts after his reflection advises him to counter falling ticket sales by learning voodoo for authentic zombie action! Really fun imo, the whole thing's on Youtube in full.

There is something about this film that I just love every time. I like the expanse of the story and its take on consumerism. It is quite funny watching them all living like kings in the Shopping Mall as the world outside falls to pieces :)

I watch at least once a year and it is one of my top five Horror films.

I love horror

I'm in the UK so mostly buying all the cool Arrow Video bluray releases, importing some of the cool region free stuff from Vinegar Syndrome and Synapse, and looking lustfully at the Scream Factory and Vestron Video stuff

StageFright
Blood Rage
Black Christmas
(yeeeeah everyone needs to watch those first three ^^^^)
The Initiation
Black Sunday
Spider Baby
Madman
Demons
The Mutilator
Slumber Party Massacre
Possession
Night of the Demons
People Under the Stairs
The Serpent and the Rainbow
The Burning
Jack Frost
Pieces

Glad to see another horror fan :) Yes, the UK Horror films are not as cut as the ones in Germany but the best ones to get are the ones from the US and Japan still. For german language I usually have to get the austrian release as they are less extreme in their censorship. German censorship is so extreme that it is almost insulting to watch many films due to how badly cut they are.

I have not seen it so I shall add them: The Sect (1991), Mephisto Waltz, Halloween 3, Invasion of the body snatchers (1978).

The Entity (1982) sounds interesting, is it really that scary?
Otherwise i still have to watch Creepshow and Night of the Creeps, they are both lurking on my shelf.
And i ordered Class of 1984 and Class of 1999 (both mediabooks). :)

The Entity is not really scary but it is not too bad as a film. The psychologists' take on her situation scene is funny I found but nothing scary.

I have Class of 1984 in German and although they are loosely tied films they are really quite different but both are good.

Its not a horror horror. But the French version of "Martyrs" put me in a state "I am in shock" mode. Its so different from anything i've seen before it and never quite seen anything like it since. If you want shock value, this one will surely hit the spot.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_no ... artyrs+blu

Also, I am a massive fan of the Japanese live action version of Death Note. Again its not your typical horror with jumps and scares, but the premise alone is enough to get you sucked in. US remake coming out shortly with lots of action scenes lol. The Japanese version already has 4 movies. The first 2 are good, 3rd i've not seen but heard its just ok. The 4th is somewhere in between and just came out.

I can't find a UK edition anywhere and I believe the price shot through the roof when it went out of print. But you can get the Australian versions on ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Death-Note-Mo ... SwU8hY44ls

The 4th kind -

I might be the only one here. But I had a child experience similar to those depicted in this movie. So when I watched it I literally started to freak out. Supposedly a true story.. so eerie. I loved it and have watched it a few more times since at the Cinema.
