Anyone know how to mod a PAL SNES Scart cable?

Post by Ripthorn »

Yeah, question is on the thread title

Since this cable is for PAL SNES, I need to remove the resistors, but I do not know which ones I remove.
Some photos to help:

I think all I need to do is remove the big black component. Should I do something else besides that? What is the purpose of the other components?
My intention is to use with the NESRGB and N64RGB, both do not need caps.

Speaking of caps, why does the NTSC SNES need them anyway?

I'd honestly suggest selling it to fund an official GC RGB SCART lead.

Use mine with my Super Famicom and previously my RGB N64.

Unfortunately this ship has already sailed...

A few years ago it was cheap, now an official GC SCART is fucking expensive :|
The SNES model has the same quality and it costs much less.

Are there three capacitors on the 7/11/15 pins? Looks really different to the official GC cable. I removed three caps on a 3rd party cable which had these separate capacitors for the R G B lines but I can't see them on yours.

This might help: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/pal-snes-rgb-cable-fix/

I have the official GC Scart (unmodified) and it will work on an rgb modded n64, at least it did on mine, it also worked on my pal 1 chip SNES but not on my other SNES which isn't a 1-chip.

This is a PAL SNES scart cable, so there is no caps, just resistors on R G B lines.
The GC SCART cable works with later model PAL SNESs, but not with early models.

Just remove the 5 pin black component that you mentioned for a straight through cable. The other components are for 16:9/4:3 and composite/RGB automatic switching. The NTSC SNES needs caps to remove the DC offset in the RGB signal. Not sure why the PAL SNES doesn't need them though, maybe it doesn't have a DC offset to begin with.

Alternatively if you don't want to desolder you can pull out the R,G,B and composite video pins from the blue connectors and connect them together with some left over legs from capacitors/resistors.

I don't think there's enough space to fit the required 3 x 220uF capacitors.

Thanks for the confirmation. I just removed the component, the dark image is fixed, but now I have the checkerboard pattern issue :(
Not sure if is a problem with the cable itself or the missing caps. The same things does not happen with the GC cable.
My eight pin to female scart has a built in sync stripper, I thought this would always give me a clear image.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's a lot easier just remove the component :)

I'm not sure why you have the checkerboard pattern now but if your GC cable is the official one then it will have a 75ohm resistor to GND and a 220uf cap in series on the sync signal so it stands to reason that if your GC cable doesn't have the checkerboard pattern then putting one or both of those on the sync signal of your SNES cable should hopefully give the same result as the GC cable.

Damn, I thought it was just removing the resistors and call it a day :|
And yeah, my GC cable is an official one made by Nintendo.
I have no idea how to put the resistor and caps inside.

I think I'll have to buy another GC scart cable

Is this good?

I have a PAL SNES SCART cable that I modded for NTSC consoles. I ended up completely ditching the little PCB altogether and rewired and added the caps to conform to the NTSC wiring spec. One nice side effect is that you can use the 12V wire as a dedicated CSYNC line.
