That first one is incredible
The YM2608 is up there on my fave FM synth chip list, it sounds simply awesome. It's low-sampled enough to have that retro charm, yet sounds more "advanced" than the 2612. It's a perfect mix

Although the 2608 doesn't produce bass as thunderous as that of a GEN/MD. I'm a huge fan of the Genesis' sound
I love both these FM soundchips, they're great *thumbs up*

This is high quality work right there. Completely sick
This just jumped to the top of my FM synth VGM list. Holy...

I think I'll get addicted to this too :)

Undercover Cops FM soundtrack is pretty cool, although the sampled version is arguably better.

Just realized that Furukawa-san has an official Youtube channel

He posts some great stuff on there, including unused PC-98 songs he wrote back in the day :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ_r0tk9sVI

He also posts remixes of his chiptunes and I love those as well. All the ones he posted in the last month are great.
He uses fuller sounding (but still old-school) FM synth sounds, and sometime adds electric guitar. Soooooo good. So So good.
I've been listening to these 4 songs in a loop non-stop this week.
It's nothing short of incredible stuff.

How did this thread reach 3 pages without a single mention of The Scheme?!
Definitely one of the best early Yuzo Koshiro works, it's a really long soundtrack, and most of it is great.

The creator of the music from Advanced V. G. 2 released a PC-98 soundtrack, even though the game was never ported to the system.

Awesome work right there

While listening to Cyber Block Metal Orange's tracks I came across this track from Strip Fighter II: Sutonyan Dash for the X68k. Unfortunately I don't really see any of the other music on youtube, but it was a nice find regardless.

A great one from Desire (PC-98) with the YM2608

Dat bass... dat rythm... those lil decaying notes... those sexy lil phone dial-like tones...
That's one sassy, sexy, awesome night-out tune

Always lovely to see this thread rise from the grave.

By strange coincidence, MasterJace always seems to post a gorgeous new arrange when it happens.

That's a cool arrange, Squire.

The source material is pretty hard to top though. A friend of mine introduced me to this OST last year and it legit blew me away. So chill and well composed, the whole thing is perfect background music for doing some work on your computer.

Okay guys, give me your recommendations for the most metal fm synth tracks that don't have Thunder Force in the title.

Calling that Detestable Name comes to mind for me.

This unused track from the PC-88 version of Ys1 comes to mind, though it's lacking a bit of "oomph": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr2x3tAv4k0

To be honest though, when I think 'metal', 'FM' and 'not Thunder Force', I usually think of the daftly-named Last Springsteen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hyesg3GixQ

Oh goodie, one of my favourite genres to hear tackled in FM. Couple off the top of my head for now:

Thunder Cross (AC) Great Battleship

^ quite reminiscent of the track you posted - I think you may be aware of it already but thought it worth mentioning!

Battle Mania 2 (MD) - Lots of stuff; this soundtrack wouldn't be out of place in a hypothetical Thunder Force VMD. Often goes for more of a hard rock/pop rock sound, befitting its cute aesthetic, but the beefy riffs keep even those tracks leaning towards a \m/etal sound. The lead synth sound is a beaut, too, much like Tecno Soft's.

Open Mind (short loop for the attract intro, but it's a catchy riff!)
CREEPING_THING (holy fuck now this is more like it, head-stomping boogie riff)
Typhoon I/II/III
My Kingdom
Lunatic Monkey (another short but worthy loop - cool solo)

Bastard!! Ankoku no Hakaishin (SFC) - Title Theme (not technically FM synth, of course, but I can't imagine it being difficult to convert over - at any rate, this sure as hell wouldn't sound out of place on the MD. Short death-metallic title loop)
Heavy Viper wrote:To be honest though, when I think 'metal', 'FM' and 'not Thunder Force', I usually think of the daftly-named Last Springsteen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hyesg3GixQ
Or "Last The Boss."  (if it's news to anyone, Moonlit Army conceals a helluva metal stomper despite only playing in short cutscenes)

I know it's not FM but... -_- god dammit I just got to mention it. Take this as an honorable mention in the worst case. (actually those are probably samples of FM synthesis, so it kinda counts... sort of)

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, despite being an absolute piece of shit, has an amazing battle music. just glorious, trashing old school heavey metal song. so dope https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZOQ8sLO-vU

Boss theme also fucking rips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUGDp39srk0

Seriously, the dude that made this music deserves an award

Sorry but since you mentionned rocking tunes I had to plug this >_<
Ok back to the subject now :P

No guitar power-chord sound in sight but Splatterhouse 2's Bellyache Battle 02 more than qualify as rock to me. With it's chugging rythm and evil, vicious melody, this one's a rocker

Was always a fan of both final boss themes in Splatterhouse 2 and 3. Oustanding catchy battle themes in games full of mostly atmospheric pieces.

Also my favorite Battle Mania track is Shrine.
