I ended up going with the cassette version of the album. Their new drummer holds his own and this is really good. Feels like a mix between OMNI and Planet of Ice.

Well, fuck. The Rise of the Synths documentary seems interesting, though.

Tagged as Ambient when it isn't at all. But who cares? They have the Tycho sound down perfectly and its pretty cheap for both of their releases they have put up.

Pottering about Cronos of Venom's solo years. TBH I find even the band's heyday 80-85 stuff iffy - when they're good they're a fucking blast, but I find myself making playlists rather than spinning whole LPs as I usually prefer with my metal. Much the same here. Lots of reliable Motorhead-alikies, but this fucker can rawwwk in intermittent peaks.

LOVE IS INFECTIOUS (Japan cover, Rock n' Roll Disease) Holy fuck, what a cookin' groove!
BABYLON (Venom) Sheeeit this one is rad too. Nutty vocals and classic bludgeoning riffs straight off Welcome to Hell. BO-DY SYN-CHRO-NI-ZAAA T-IONNN

Digital Trip Space Battleship Yamato Synthesizer Fantasy
Browsing a Japanese seller's inventory and the words "Synthesizer Fantasy" caught my eye. Pretty light synth pop. I love it.
Turns out there's a whole series of these Digital Trip Synthesizer Fantasy albums from the mid 80's.

you seem to hang more around the dark and twisted NWOBHM bands like Venom, while I'm more on the side of the explosion of first wave Norwegian Black Metal outfits with the likes of Mayhem, Darkthrone and Emperor. That is (I think) my fave sound of them all(with the exception of what's in the paragraph just below). As well as newer bands that exploit that same old, crusty blitz of sounds.

We shall meet somewhere in the middle at Hellhamer/Celtic Frost :o
Or Bathory
fucking LOVE these 2 bands as well. Especially Celtic Frost, they're one of my all-time fave.

Other oldies that I adore : Mercyful Fate. Iron Maiden. I love trash metal, that's a metal sub-genre VERY high on my list(HUGE fan : Slayer, Kreator, Sodom in particular), also love d00m acts such as Candlemass, Pentagram, and of course BLACK SABBATH. There are a bunch of newer bands in the doom/stoner/sludge metal genre that i really dig also.
Suffice to say, as long as it's kvlt as fuck, I'm usually into it :o

I'm a bit of a noob with the really hard Scandinavian stuff tbh. You're absolutely correct though, I do love To Mega Therion. Like Venom on horse steroids. Will have to check out more of the stuff you mentioned, thanks for the names!

Make sure to listen to their first LP Morbid Tales if you haven't already, it's as good as To Mega Therion!
(it doesn't have the sweet, vicious H. R. Geiger art, though  )

The Giger cover is indeed why I beelined straight for Mega Therion. ^__^ Those'll leap out of a discography every time. See also Danzig III: How The Gods Kill (to its credit, that one's genuinely the best of his early "doomy blues" quartet).

Lucifuge > Danzig 1 > How the Gods Kill. Cool art or not.

To Mega Therion does indeed rule. Seeing Celtic Frost live on the Monotheist tour is one of the highlights of my concert-going.

I love all four (even 4P), tbh, but I gravitate to their grittier/doomier elements. Lucifuge has the best singles and hooks for sure (III's "Dirty Black Summer" is conversely the album's weakest song), but John Christ's guitar tone on stuff like Do You Wear The Mark? is savage.

Admittedly Lucifuge and ST have stuff like Pain In The World and Possession. There's not that much between 'em on the gloom quotient. Some of 4P is downright soporific and usually gets the chop from my playlist (I struggle to differentiate Son of the Morning Star and Stalker Song when it's been a while), but the initial smack of Brand New God and Little Whip goes a long way. I like the wailing swagger on Going Down To Die and Let It Be Captured as well.

Should mention Thrall too. "It's Coming Down" rocks hard, though one watch of the video will provide 2000% the RDA of manbutts and microdicks. 3:

Yeah, I'm more into the rocking, energetic Danzig. My listening habits tend mostly towards death or black metal, so when I want something dirtier or heavier, I've got almost my entire album collection to pull from. Danzig is when I want some hedonistic rocking with an evil twist -- "Snakes of Christ" is the ultimate Danzig song for me.

When I want true total filth, that's what Bahimiron or Infester are for.

I'm too young to have seen the "86 Celtic Frost tour here with local heros and trash metal gods Voïvod  but damn, I wish I did

By the way I've got to give a shoutout to Voïvod here. Their early stuff is downright savage. Something very visceral about them. Their second LP Rrröööaaarrr is mandatory listen if you like Mötorhead, or just like heavey metal or trash metal in general.
Love the cover art to their 2 first LPs as well. Very original and very crust as well

Also BIL you did good by going straight to To Mega Therion! It's wildly considered their best, and is a landmark album in metal. It's just that Morbid Tales is every bit as good, is all. H. R. Geiger didn't steer you wrong :P

Haha, speaking of that Voivod/Celtic Frost tour, an older guy was telling me about when he saw that tour. He got a concussion in the pit during Voivod's set and had to sit out the pit during Celtic Frost.

I love Voivod. Not just the old stuff, either -- the weird spacey prog-thrash is awesome.

haha that's a great story

I also love Voïvod's weird spacey prog-thrash stuff :)
They have a knack for taking a left turn and going where people weren't expecting them to go! which is awesome in my book

^ Here's one I keep around. Image

Thread deserves it after you guys' last few posts - lots of stuff I'll have to try out. With music in general, not just heavy stuff, I tend to find an album I like and kinda latch on... in my teens I went after the more elementary bands' discographies pretty voraciously, the basics like Sabbath, Priest and Maiden. These days my hobbyist furies are mostly reserved for gaming, but I still blast the \m/etal when I can. Image

Love the Voivod album covers, that first dude's channeling Eddie, Snaggletooth and Jason Voorhees simultaneously.

Very cool albums. I'll recommend a listen to fans of New Age music and/or Jean-Michel Jarre. The first album is a good start, imo:
