I just fixed my original Xbox and I've been reading about mods for it. It doesn't require a mod, but there's a way to force 720p output for games- I'm assuming this is just upscaling console-side?

There's also 480p and widescreen forcing in games that don't natively support them. Widescreen forcing looks like it's all hex codes- does this mean it's only for games installed to the hard drive, so you can't use your original discs? How about 480p forcing, is that just hex codes or can it be done (with a softmod) for discs as well?

hi everyone! I wanna ask some questions about Sony PVM 1454QM. Do it have input lag? Do it work correctly with 240p? Can it be used with light gun? Thanks

I hooked up an Extron 109xi to combine VGA HV from my HDFURY to my BVM (Outputting in RGBS Scart from the Extron). However the screen began to distort slightly, then the overload light came on so I quickly switched off the TV. Since then, I experienced a couple of weird 'spark' sounds and split second picture off/on flickers when using the usual RGB 240p consoles. Bit worried I've fried the monitor slightly. Is this something the Extron is capable of doing? Ta :)

Are there any projects for more expansive solutions to PS1 memory cards? High capacity after market MCs seem to be pretty unreliable (though if you know one that's good, let me know), and there isn't a VMC solution for PS2 (I think that flash cart-y thing does, though? Regardless, i'm using a ps2 so it's out of the question).

The overload thing is mostly to do with the HV, I'd presume. On my old BVM i can overdrive the brightness and contrast, and on some bright white screens i get the light coming on. Higher Beam current needs higher HV to pull it, after a manner of speaking. I think that's how it works. If the extron is brighter, then yes, it's technically capable of doing this. Sounds weird though. The set might shut itself off due to overload, but should come back on again if left powered down for a while. If there's any problem there, try reseating all the option cards, including the 'non-opitional' option cards, if there are any.

If you're comfortable opening the set, to reduce the HV you might be able to adjust the HV pot, B+ and test the PSU voltages, but you might also lose brightness in doing so. You shouldn't, really, but give it a go and see.

Anybody have an NES Classic Mini and messed around with Hakchi? The absolute #1 thing I'd want to do is add bilinear filtering to the 4:3 mode, but it looks like everyone in the "modding community" moved straight to Retroarch... I'm curious if modifying the built-in emulator seems possible or not.

Annoying burned audio CD issue:

I burned a disc this morning from a flac copy and on my computer and xbox 360, it sounds just like the flacs. When I play it on my component CD deck or my PS1 (fat) it sounds like garbage. It's not the sound errors I'd expect from an old laser, it's as though the gain is turned up immensely and it is peaking constantly. I haven't noticed this on any other discs that I've burned so I'm wondering if anyone has any guess about what is going on?

Is it possible to chain HDMI switches?

I'm currently using a 4 in 2 out matrix and have only one input for HDMI consoles, of which I have currently three set up. Ideally I'd like to connect connect a separate switch for HDMI consoles to one of the inputs, if that's possible.

It is possible to chain HDMI switches (I have a 8 port Aten switch connected to a cheap 5 port China switch for my capture setup).

How well it works depends on the switches though, if they're automatic they might cause problems by being "always on" and if they're HDMI powered they might need power from a separate power supply if you want to chain a lot of them.

I'm looking to buy S-Video cables for my Model 1 SNES. Seemed like a simple thing, but after doing some research I am getting some conflicting results. Some say the OEM cables are by far the best, others say all cables that don't have composite are equal, others say certain brands are/aren't good, etc. If the increase in quality between OEM and 3rd party is minimal, I doubt I'd notice the difference for 4x the price.

Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

I bought one hand-made by some guy in sweden off ebay that is fantastic. Before that I was using a cheap knockoff one that had both s-video and composite and it was terrible. 3-4 years ago I used it a ton, but now the majority of my consoles are connected via RGB so I only use it when I drag out my N64.

Definitely get one that doesn't have composite video at least....the cheap one I had created a checkerboard pattern on some colors and an overall dullness to the picture due to a problem with the composite video being soldered to something incorrectly, which is very common.

PS - I see you're in ceres, I used to live in turlock ca.....lol small world.

Good advice. I am thinking of picking up this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-best-S-vide ... SwEppUPd4d

Crazy you used to be in Turlock, another member here lives about 20 minutes from me too, gone up to see him a few times. Small world indeed.

Has anyone found decently priced decent quality Xbox component cables? All I see are original and Monster branded for $80+ or cheap Chinese ones that are just awful.

I took a chance on these because the seller lives nearby (Québec City) and they've turned out great. Really happy with the picture performance and the cable's quality. I've seen another member here recommend them.

That's the same cable that I used before I went RGB. They work decently and they're cheap.

Does anyone know the exact name/model of these 2-pin PCB connectors and 2-pin wire harness? I know they should be called JST something something but apparently they come in many different types and pitches.

The Xbox HD AV Pack is the second-best alternative to the Monster cables, since it also offers component and optical audio. Looks like they're fairly expensive these days too though, I'd wait a bit and keep an eye out for a deal.

"decently"?

I'm guessing "decently" as in "well, they're still S-Video cables". Maybe I'm off though

@Guspaz To me "they're good, I recommend" is alot more praiseful than "decent".
Isaw a notable shift in tone, and that's why I asked if your opinion on them had changed

RE: SNES S-video cables I've used three different kinds = OE, Monster, and generic eBay (no composite) and I've never noticed much difference. Unless you're getting absolutely trash cables the lack of clarity in S-Video itself is going to be more noticeable than specific cable differences.

The IT guy at my work is throwing away some ancient computers he's had in his parts graveyard and offered me some free stuff. My question is.....when it comes to mame, is it worth setting up a dinosaur computer? I've heard people talk about the old stuff working better.....VGA graphics card is outputting an analog signal.....PS2 keyboard and mouse inputs (I think I remember someone telling me that PS2 has less input lag than USB). This machine is a 866mhz Pentium III, and it has 256mb of Ram that runs at 133mhz. He said he doesn't remember what operating system is on it, but the stickers on the side have keys for 98 and 2000. It has a dedicated graphics card (not sure what it is, he's also giving me a couple other graphics cards), but seems to be lacking a sound-card.

I'm definitely taking it home to play doom and random DOS stuff, but maybe this would be good for mame too? I'm currently running mame on a computer running windows 7 and hyperspin and it feels a bit bloated. My arcade controls are all wired to an i-pac4 which came with a PS2 cable, so I'd be good to go there. My current PC is hooked up VGA to an extron VSC200 unit that sends s-video to a CRT. I'm working on eventually upgrading that to RGB....my previous plan was to get an extron RGB unit to hook my VSC to that would convert the 480i to 240p and send that to my CRT through RGB instead....but with this old PC I can probably just get 240p straight out of it?

That machine is too weak for a proper MAME setup. You will only be able to get satisfactory performance for really oldschool games like Dankey Kang.

A modern machine with a graphics card compatible with CRT_EmuDriver will give you superior performance, and better 15khz compatibility to boot.
