Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
Finally found a wifi dongle for the XBox 360 that wasn't priced like it's 2010 and was pleasantly surprised to find it uses 5.1gHz just fine on my home network. I was pretty sure it would just be a 2.4gHz, shitty old tech but it works well for it's age.

I'm pretty sure Whip Rush is from Vic Tokai staff. GDRI lists it as Vic Tokai and Kazuaki Kinoshita is listed as game designer.Kiken wrote: I'm pretty sure Arrow Flash was the one Sega-programmed shmup I was missing from the console's line-up (the others being Whip Rush, Crying and the MD conversion of Forgotten Worlds). Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
It's actually cheaper than other arcade sticks, though it seems most controllers are more expensive than they have been in the past. Amazon's prime shipping also helped. I wish more arcade controllers were closer to the EX-SE in price when it was selling new. I was debating waiting for a US release of the RAP PS4 model with the headphone jack since it's supposed to have less lag, but after reading other impressions and a complaint about the Sega Genesis 6-button pad being the one of the most lagged controllers ever, I decided not to take much stock in some of the lag comments.Tarma wrote: That was the price paid for the stick...
It feels good having a job. I can't believe I waited so long.

The Japanese box, manual, cart, and end credits all say copyright 1990 Sega Enterprises. Regardless of who worked on it, it is a Sega IP (this was even joked about in interviews with the lead designer of TFVI).BrianC wrote:I'm pretty sure Whip Rush is from Vic Tokai staff. Seriously though, I don't think there's any such thing as a "cheap" arcade stick anymore. Most of HRAP stuff is well over $100, and if it's been modded, even more.
Still, I have a Kai for my Jp 360 and I'm very pleased with it. No doubt I'll start considering a similar stick for the PS4 if M2 continue to release high quality ports of classic '90s shmups!

Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
Whenever people ask about sticks, I always recommend getting a cheap easy-to-mod stick, and putting a Sanwa or Seimitsu joystick into it. This is by far the cheapest solution (for a high-end stick that is), but will also give you the best product money can buy.Tarma wrote:Seriously though, I don't think there's any such thing as a "cheap" arcade stick anymore.
I get that a lot of people don't want to bother with modding, and just want something good out of the box, but I will never understand why people are willing to shell out so much money for that minor luxury, and maybe even still end up with a stick that's still subpar (ie. a good Hori stick instead of a genuine Sanwa)
Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
^ Same here, I can't swallow the idea of paying about 100 more bucks than before (average commercial sticks prices new or used were indeed significantly lower a few years back) for the same shit that's still mostly a big hard plastic case with cheap mechanical parts and components. And as you say even those that are barely over children's toys level of quality have become expensive.
Arcade sticks are priced like accessories, which in commercial understanding means huge margin/profit compared to devices. These things are really cheap to manufacture.
Crap my professional tools could see the end of times and they're way more affordable than a damn arcade stick. *facepalm*

The Hori Hayabusa stick subpar? It feels quality to me and it seems to be popular with the fighting game community. The longer throw isn't for everyone, but it's responsive and well made. I prefer Seimitsu myself (I love sticks with shorter throws) and Sanwa is definitely quality, but the Hori stick is far from subpar.Sumez wrote: I get that a lot of people don't want to bother with modding, and just want something good out of the box, but I will never understand why people are willing to shell out so much money for that minor luxury, and maybe even still end up with a stick that's still subpar (ie. a good Hori stick instead of a genuine Sanwa)
I'm not defending the high prices, but I noticed that, in many cases, custom sticks are more expensive than getting one premade. There's also disadvantages in modding a cheap stick since the PCB in those are often poorly made. I also heard that the cheap Hori mini stick is poorly made, has small buttons, and is not ideal for modding.
Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
By subpar, in the context of arcade joysticks, I simply mean it's not the best you can get. Not that it's bad in itself. When modding a Seimitsu or Sanwa into a cheap stick is actually cheaper, why not go for that?
Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
I dunno, the longer throw could be an advantage in fighting games and the stick is very responsive. I prefer Sanwa and Seimitsu myself, but mainly because I prefer a shorter throw in my sticks. In some cases, modding isn't always cheaper, and some cheap sticks suffer from a poor PCB. The Mayflash sticks sound like they could be good candidates for modding, though.Sumez wrote:By subpar, in the context of arcade joysticks, I simply mean it's not the best you can get. I actually ordered this a few weeks ago and it makes those sticks seem dirt cheap in comparison:

edit: I thought of another disadvantage of modding cheap sticks. Size. Some cheaper sticks are too small for some of the better joysticks.

Finally cracked and bought one of these:

I'm not really into limited edition console designs, but this SFC inspired 3DS was too cool to pass up, and now gives me access to play Sega's classic collections as well

Got this for free on tuesday from my local gamestop!
Was a pain to move and haul up the stairs into my gameroom but i was pretty excited to get it! The Wii U was my favorite system of this gen and i always liked the look of this kiosk! Got it set up last night and everything works!
Didnt come with the original demo system so i just put mine in it.

It was free. Gamestop is either giving them away or throwing them out. In my case i had called around to all my local gamestops and put my name in at a few of them and i got a call about it. I know some people are just dumpster diving for em. Wouldnt hurt to call around and see if any stores still have any if you are looking to get one.gbaplayer wrote:@DQ187: This is cool, how much did you pay for it?

Just came out... it's the new Soul of Chogokin version. Is this something new, or are these the old toys?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
Sweet! Have you seen the new Voltron on Netflix? It's surprisingly good and has some elements from GoLion. I can't wait to see how it handles Lotor.Strider77 wrote:Just came out... it's the new Soul of Chogokin version. Is this something new, or are these the old toys?

This was one of the last titles on my PCE search list:

Filled a few Mega Drive holes. Nothing toooo special, I already have most MD stuff I wanted...

...that's why it's time to finally upgrade!

When I was a kid, I was dying to have Voltron toys. But my parents just refused. I never had a single one.
So, I'd like to have this on the shelf.

Finally got myself a Turbografx! Time to wire myself up a composite cable. If it isn't too difficult I'll probably mod it for RGB as well.
Anyone have some advice for some cheap games for someone new to the system? I want to get R-type and Blazing Lasers right off the bat if they aren't too much.

Re: Awesome stuff you've just bought (+pics please)
I'm going to recommend getting a Turbo Everdrive. The cost involved with buying single legitimate games for TG16 has gotten costly and for titles like Blazing Lazers your money is better spent on an all in one solution like the TE.Shoryukev wrote:Finally got myself a Turbografx! Ol' Amazon.com offers it up for sale right here with free Prime shipping (although the original MSRP is at $299.99): https://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Tamashii- ...
