NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
We had a version mismatch on the purebasic code, so I was able to add in the other requested combinations on a re-send. Here's the updated combination list (and I really hope this covers everything):
Option 1:
PC-10 >>> Composite Direct (FBX) >>> Original Hardware (FBX)
Option 2:
PC-10 >>> Composite Direct (FBX) >>> PVM Style (FBX)
Option 3:
PC-10 >>> NES Classic (FBX-FS) >>> PVM Style (FBX)
Option 4:
PVM Style (FBX) >>> NES Classic (FBX-FS) >>> Composite Direct (FBX)
Option 5:
PVM Style (FBX) >>> Original Hardware (FBX) >>> Composite Direct (FBX)
Option 6:
PVM Style (FBX) >>> Original Hardware (FBX) >>> NES Classic (FBX-FS)
.

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Fantastic. Kudos to you, FBX!
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Now everyone should be served
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Brilliant, thanks FBX
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Thanks everyone!
The moment I get the Firmwares from Tim, I'll flash mine and give the Original Hardware a try on my PVM. That's the only palette of the lot that might be subject to change if the theory is off, but I'm pretty confident it will turn out just fine.

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Option #5 for me!
I still have my PC-10 NES (don't know why, but I still love it) and I don't really like what Nintendo did with the NES Classic palette, so this is the absolute perfect choice for me! Wes D currently has my NESRGB Famicom and I believe he has a programmer, so I'll be able to try it when I get it back! Very exciting stuff, thanks again for all the hard work!

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Great work FBX, looking forward to trying it out. Now to get this adapter made..
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
So, what are the odds of I end up bricking my NESRGB board?
If something goes wrong, I'll have to send it to Tim to fix for me?

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
!? Firmware is installed via JTAG port. It's how one writes to an EMPTY chip as well! Impossible to brick it. Just physical damage can kill your NESRGB.Ripthorn wrote:So, what are the odds of I end up bricking my NESRGB board?

I already own an USB blaster, but never installed the FBX paletts because I was afraid of screw something.
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Yeah, it's pretty easy. I've done it twice, first for Unsaturated-V5 and then V6. My V6 update failed at first because my cables weren't making good enough contact with the NESRGB, but after holding the cables down more firmly, the second try worked flawlessly.Ripthorn wrote:Nice. Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Dang, I don't ant to be "that guy", but looking at the palette configurations, I didn't find the combo that I would go for; for me it would be:
PC10(FBX)/ Original Hardware (FBX)/ PVM Style (FBX)
I actually love PC10 for that Nintendo "arcade experience", but I plan on using Original Hardware the lions share of the time on my CRT, whereas having access to the PVM Style palette is great in the event that I ever transition to a flat panel display with an upscaler. If the palette configurations are set, then it looks like I'll have to drop PC10, and grab one of the configurations that contains either Composite Direct (somewhat redundant for my needs), and NES Classic (I palette I'm not terribly interested in.

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Not to be Mr. Negative here but is there anyone that actually likes the NES Classic palette? I'm not a fan of the colors Nintendo chose and do we really need 4 palettes? It would probably be a lot cheaper and easier with just the 3.

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
I've had a few people express interest in the novelty of it. I agree though that the palette is rather ugly, especially in the brighter colors. One of the yellowish bright colors looks like a shade of dirty underwear.austin532 wrote:Not to be Mr. Negative here but is there anyone that actually likes the NES Classic palette? Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Just out of curiosity, I did the math and determined it would only take 10 total firmware options to cover every possible combination of three out of the five total palettes.
So, the other four would be:
Composite Direct >>> NES Classic >>> Original Hardware
Composite Direct >>> NES Classic >>> PC-10
NES Classic >>> Original Hardware >>> PC-10
Original Hardware >>> PC-10 >>> PVM Style
So, the other four would be:
Composite Direct >>> NES Classic >>> Original Hardware
Composite Direct >>> NES Classic >>> PC-10
NES Classic >>> Original Hardware >>> PC-10
Original Hardware >>> PC-10 >>> PVM Style
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
why are we trying to simulate the nes classic? People get the nesrgb or avs so they dont have to play on that software emulator - and now we're trying to clone it??
release the classic nes as nestopia palette only.

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Well, it is official Nintendo and all, but I'm starting to agree with The_Atomik_Punk! here. With the NES Classic's flaws pretty well documented, the console and its palette have become less appealing.leonk wrote:why are we trying to simulate the nes classic? Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
what's next?? Nintendo eStore NES colors on original Wii!??
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
I like the way it looks. And it's technically an official palette. /shrug.austin532 wrote:Not to be Mr. Negative here but is there anyone that actually likes the NES Classic palette? I think things have become beyond nit picky at this point. Even if you get supposedly a close to 100% accurate Palette from the console, no 2 uncalibrated CRTs likely displayed every color exactly the same.
Something will eventually be off from someone's memory.
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
that's the brillience in what FBX did! If the color is off with the NESRGB on your CRT, plug in an unmodded NES and you'll see it's off exactly the same way!
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
I can't say NES Classic appeals to me either. It may be "official," but that doesn't mean "right." To each their own, though!
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
I second thatleonk wrote:that's the brillience in what FBX did! If the color is off with the NESRGB on your CRT, plug in an unmodded NES and you'll see it's off exactly the same way!
I'll go with Option 1 as I didn't want a toggle switch on my NES and just want the pure Original Hardware palette to play on my Sony BVM.
BTW can you restore Tim's original firmware palettes once the NESRGB has been updated? (Just to be sure)

Yes, you can download it here:Yamato wrote:BTW can you restore Tim's original firmware palettes once the NESRGB has been updated? (Just to be sure)

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
They are just palettes from other emulators. For example:copy wrote:Yes, you can download it here:Yamato wrote:BTW can you restore Tim's original firmware palettes once the NESRGB has been updated? (Just to be sure)

PC10 is the "RGB" option in Nestopia.
Natural is the "YUV" option in Nestopia.
Improved is the "FCEUX" palette.
None of which come close to NTSC NES colors. However, I've been told "YUV" is closer to PAL colors.

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
PC-10 is from the Playchoice 10 arcade cabinets Nintendo made. That said, it's not anywhere near NES colors and for most games is pretty hideous.FBX wrote:They are just palettes from other emulators. Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
Got the new Firmware options from Tim, but I've been sick in bed the past couple days due to a nasty cold. I should be well enough tomorrow to test them out and upload them.
Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
After the amount of work and dedication you put into these palettes, I'm surprised you're still in one piece.

Re: NESRGB New Firmware Palette Updates:
would it be possible to do the same reverse engineering for a playchoice10 rgb modded nes as with the Composite Direct (FBX) & Original Hardware (FBX)? or is the PC-10 palette already accurate?
thanks!
thanks!
