You must dislike the facts that the Ibara port has a Practice mode, art galleries and options to change your button configuration, then. Those Bastards.
Sega did that a couple years ago with one of their Initial D games.
Also, I remember how you guys jumped down my throat when I talked about upping your ship count (which is a DIP option on the PCB), so I'm staying out of this argument.

Hmm...if I read you correctly, you dislike including "non-original" options, even minor ones, which could be applied to "Arcade Mode" or its equivalent, but are okay with including the same features as defaults on a different "mode" altogether.Yes, I hate that stuff...
Ehm, no, I don't. Practice is a thing, arcade mode another.
I guess both'll do the job, more or less, but I've just never been that obsessed with "purity" when it comes to video games...options are options after all, no one's forced to use 'em. I don't know much about programming, but offhand I'd think that it'd be more work to create a whole separate mode for relatively minor tweaks. Again, though, just my preference.
And as for what you said about "wanting a different game" if you want something changed (or even including the option to change it) from the arcade version, I might apply the "throwing out the baby with the bathwater" cliche to this...just because you aren't wild about certain features of a certain game and would like to see them addressed doesn't mean you hate the game altogether and would rather be playing something completely different. Methinks that sort of (rather narrow, imho) viewpoint is part of what's led to my reputation around here as a "Garegga hater," though that's not at all the case.

Uhm... I like arcade games. I like playing these games for score. I like to compare my score from the conversion to scores from the PCB, if I don't own it. To do this, it's necessary to have a perfect conversion (with default setting...), and not a version 1.1 with a boss bar, a rank bar, different patterns or something similar. This is all, is it so weird?

Well, that's the thing, we've been talking about optional stuff here; if you wanted to leave the thing just as it was in the arcade you could do that, while others who aren't as concerned with "purity" could tweak a few things to their liking. It just seems (unless I've misunderstood you) that even including such options, even if you're perfectly able to not use them at all, is somehow "a completely different game" to you. I just don't look at it the same way, is all.LUNardei wrote:Uhm... I like arcade games. I like playing these games for score. Ok, understood your point. Optional stuff in arcade mode imho is useless, and I don't understand people who wants it. That's all, last words.BulletMagnet wrote:Well, that's the thing, we've been talking about optional stuff here; if you wanted to leave the thing just as it was in the arcade you could do that, while others who aren't as concerned with "purity" could tweak a few things to their liking. Autobomb wouldn't work for Ibara. You can still get killed while bombing. The traditional Cave games make it so either A) you are invincible while bombing, B) all bullets on-screen disappear when bombing, or some combination of A & B. Ibara's bombing is sheerly a bullet-cancel move. You can still die if, say, you back up into a bullet, or get sidewinded by one.LUNardei wrote:Yes, with ***optional*** autobomb and autopilot...Zweihander wrote:Perhaps some UBER-SPECIAL ULTIMATE FINAL FINAL MIX EDITION will include it, who knows...
As for autopilot... I don't even know what to say. You pretty much demeaned yourself by mentioning autopilot in a shmup, so I dunno what else there is to add to that one. Thanks for doing my job for me. Have a cookie.

RE: BulletMagnet vs. Garrega:
I think the only issue here is that every time there is a thread about rank or garrega, BM seems to stick his foot right in the middle of it. I joked about this in another thread, but I'm afraid BM's repuation has already been established and no amount of 'I actually like Garreaga' will change a thing!
(well not unless he starts posting about how much he loves rank)
ANYWAY...
My copy of Ibara showed up today and I have to say I love it. Definitely harder than Garrega, but the game feels so much like Garrega it is hard (at least for me) not to love it. The bullet patterns and general strategies are 100% raizing, which is exactly what I needed (where Mushi on the other hand virtually brought my love of Cave to an end (sorry for the Mushi lovers out there...))
And what is with the homages (very early on) to Gun Frontier?? I LOVE IT! Glad to know that in 2006 I can still play a game that feels very mid 90's.
Definitely way too much going on at some points (maybe most of the time actually). Crazy stuff!

Only cuz no one else dares to, for fear of being yelled at...I'm used to that by now, heh heh.
In that case, I suppose I might as well revel in my newfound position as The Source of All Evil, as Rando once branded me.I joked about this in another thread, but I'm afraid BM's repuation has already been established and no amount of 'I actually like Garreaga' will change a thing!
Homage to Gun Frontier, eh? I don't think anyone else has mentioned that yet...I'll hafta keep my eye out for it.

Yup, level 2 especially is all about Gun Frontier. Wish the actual gameplay of GunFrontier was better, since the visual design was always among the top shmups!Homage to Gun Frontier, eh? I don't think anyone else has mentioned that yet...I'll hafta keep my eye out for it.

Hee hee...you do realize that from this point on, whenever anyone gets mad at me for my evilness, I'm going to innocently point and say "But CMoon told me to revel!"CMoon wrote:EXACTLY!!!
Ay, I wish the same thing for lots of shmups, especially by Taito, come to think of it...purely visually speaking, Metal Black in particular is one of my favorites...Wish the actual gameplay of GunFrontier was better, since the visual design was always among the top shmups!
EDIT, for the cap'n: You SIGGED it, you little fuzzy pillaging bugger!

The thing is, I really love Gun Frontier, but the Saturn version includes a auto-fire hack that nearly breaks the game, while the idea of not using auto-fire is quite horrifying! Also, the Saturn version does not include a 'hard' setting, which would be nice given how easy the game is while using the auto-fire hack.
And of course, revel away!

Really, no adjustable difficulty? Taito's ports have generally been pretty bare-bones, but that does sound pretty stripped down...I only have the Taito Memories version of it, so I've never played with autofire.CMoon wrote:Also, the Saturn version does not include a 'hard' setting, which would be nice given how easy the game is while using the auto-fire hack.

Finally got my (second) copy from Yesasia. And thankfully it came with the Arcadia booklet in a beautiful sealable slipcase, unlike the copy I bought from PA. Yesasia took longer than PA and didn't ship on the day they said (the invoice said Feb 21 but the actual ship date on the package was Feb 25), but it was cheaper than PA and they gave me the extras it was supposed to come with.

Yeah, had a similar experience at the stage 4 boss with 4,9XX,XXX.NTSC-J wrote:I just got munched with a score of 2,998,920. Ibara fights dirty.
The booklet was written by Clover-TAC and judging by the screens, he's always got a full stock of ships. Suiciding is for the weak, I guess.
But another time I lost my last life and the shrapnel of my explosion killed enough enemies to get the next extend. Crazy.

I haven't been following this thread, but my copy from P-A came today. No booklet, but I've been picking up all sorts of other goodies for myself so I don't feel super ripped off.
Just had a first ever credit through this game, and holy ASS this game is SICK SICK SICK!!!! I NEVER had this much fun with Garegga, although I can see the tributes and I feel like I should give Garegga another chance... AFTER I have my fun with this game, heh heh heh...
