Monitor for retro gaming in general?

Post by aaronk »

I've been looking for an ideal monitor for a (planned future purchase) RetroUSB AVS & OSSC. I've been watching the Best 1440p monitor thread with interest, but my needs aren't quite the same. While 1440p would be nice (especially since I may dual-pupose this as an external display when I work at home, and 1080p is a bit limited for that), I've been looking at 1080p displays since they do better on input lag, and they're a lot cheaper. 4K is an option too, but again, input lag is more of an issue there (though Dell's P2415Q doesn't do too poorly there).

The Dell 2417H seems like it would be a good choice, but for the reported significant increase in input lag when dealing with non-native resolutions (this makes me wonder if other displays are tested for non-native resolutions... but the 2417H is the only display where I've seen this pointed out in reviews). The 2414H is still available and sounds like a decent choice though.

The HP 25er/27er sound like very good displays at great price points, but they lack VESA compatibility, and the stand doesn't allow for much adjustability. If I dual-purpose the display for work, I would want to put it on an Erogtron arm (or the Amazon Basics equivalent).

Any others I should look at? Priorities are lag, image quality, and VESA support.
