The Light-Gun Games Thread
Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
I've always loved virtua cop on the Saturn, it was first real introduction to light gun games. It was and still is awesome, it also made a great Christmas that year.
Other favourites include,
Hotd2 (dc)
Confidential mission (dc)
Gunblade ny/LA machine guns (wii)
Ghost squad (wii)
Ninja assault (ps2)
Vampire night (ps2)
I was always gutted Jurassic park never made it to the dc :/

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
The Lost World was superb, I put so many credits into that. A bit like with Virtua Cop 2 I'd often find a cab set to easy with loads of lives, not realise until I put my quid in, and 1 CC it. Then go for both guns with my leftover credits.
I was amazed they put out Gunblade/LA Machineguns on Wii then never bothered with any other obscure ones. I have to say I never liked Ghost Squad due to the horrible boss fights.

Tried Transformers: Human Alliance by Sega this last weekend and had a blast. Feels like a mix of LA Machine Guns and Virtua Cop.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

I NEED to play that.Specineff wrote:Tried Transformers: Human Alliance by Sega this last weekend and had a blast. Feels like a mix of LA Machine Guns and Virtua Cop.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
There are a couple of Vectrex light-gun games in the works by using a Sega Phaser light gun setup including Whack-A-Mole & Simon Says. Sounds intriguing nevertheless.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
I recently wanted to play some light gun games on the DC and and got very disappointed when both of my guns (the SEGA one) were very inaccurate compared to arcade machines. I've tried it on two different tubes (no 100hz), via vga and scart, I've tried turning up the brightness and contrast etc but nothing helps.
When I google this, many people who talked about it have the same problem, but then others claim the guns on Dreamcast (made by SEGA or any other brand) were just as accurate as real guns and that even the army used them.
I found only one post which could explain everything: the person stated that the guns on Dreamcast were very "picky" with the screen one uses. On some screens the guns were accurate and on others they were not at all. I wonder if this is true, it would explain the different opinions about it.
Does anybody know anything about it?

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
I don't know about the accuracy of Sega's DC Gun, but the guns for Confidential Mission and The Maze of Kings were more like console guns in that they needed to be calibrated. Not sure if they were less accurate, but they seemed to be tricky to calibrate at times. Given that these are both Naomi games and one has a direct DC port, gives me the impression that the DC gun isn't quite perfect either.
Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
If it's a tube issue it may become difficult to define which CRT will be the "best" for the job.
Despite the number of TV manufacturers there were only a handful of CRT manufacturers who supplied for end assembly.
Same with LED / LCD today - you may have a Panasonic (for example), doesn't mean they built the screen, just assembled the set to their own spec - same with CRT.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
Yeah I should have mentioned that calibrating the guns didn't help either. Such a shame.
Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
I like the way the Guncon and Guncon 2 work. Plugs into video and is extremely accurate.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
The PSVR Aim controller sounds like it will be good, with 1:1 tracking. Hopefully there will also be titles for it that require just the Playstation Camera and not the PSVR, because I'd like a PS4 version of Time Crisis 5 to use it on. Sony's Shawn Layden would love to see Point Blank on PS4, so maybe he could get Namco into porting over some gun games. I wouldn't mind another Razing Storm type package with multiple games.BrianC wrote:I like the way the Guncon and Guncon 2 work. Plugs into video and is extremely accurate.
Dark Escape 4D wouldn't be a bad choice either. This could have VR and 3D TV modes. To emulate the Panic function from the arcade, they could use some sort of wristbands- not exactly like a Fitbit, but rather something that just has a simple pulse monitor in it.
Kinect? KIN NOT.
Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
I did find Maze of Kings to be harder to calibrate than Confidential Mission due to the odd shaped gun. Would not be surprised at all if both guns turned out to be very similar to the official JP Sega DC gun. From my experience with arcade Naomi gun games and the Mad Catz gun (which is decent, but has an odd aiming reticle), I highly doubt the claim that they were used by the army.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
Not exactly a light-gun game. But I still wonder why Castlevania: The Arcade never got a home port. Seems like it would be a perfect fit for the move controllers, and it would sell on it's name alone...
Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
I've bit the bullet and gone for that Dolphin Bar.
My quick review is that it is about as accurate as I expected, and good enough to have fun with. The accuracy isn't as good as possible, and I would imagine the Aimtrak is slightly better, but I don't have one yet to compare with.
I've been able to get it to work with any game on any emulator that I've tried so far too.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
I think it's as good as the Aimtraks, and about a 10th of the price. I'll look forward to more of your videos. Have you got Supermodel 3 running? There have been a load of updates since 3a, and the games run almost perfectly. I was really surprised by Ocean Hunter.Smraedis wrote:I've bit the bullet and gone for that Dolphin Bar.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
Yeah I just don't want to spend the money on it to find that it's almost the same really.
I haven't really done Supermodel yet as there is only The Lost World on there that I'd be interested in, I have already got the emulator setup for other Model 3 games in the past though.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
Have since got The Lost World to work with the gun.
If you put the gun controls to have trigger also on right mouse button, you can just press A to reload.
Also you get a crosshair by pressing Alt-I, I was able to get a mouse cursor too by starting in windowed and then going full screen.

Brilliant. I think HotD4 was the best one so far, can't wait to see how this turns out. Looks like the machine gun is back. Here's hoping for a VR port.

Great, now not only do we need a console port of Time Crisis 5, but this baby as well. I hope so.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
For those of you who have experienced lackluster performance on your IR lightguns (with sensor bars), I was told that quite a few of the later arcade games used IR lightguns and everything I played at the arcade always worked very well. Anybody know if this is true? and if so I'm curious why there's no decent way to play lightgun games on a flatscreen in 2018.
For my own light gun games, my favorite is House of the Dead III on the original Xbox (which after you beat it unlocks the original HotD II). It's just a shame there weren't many Xbox light gun games. There's some portions of Starsky and Hutch (meh), and the one I really wanted to play is Silent Scope, but that game totally sucks: the TV needs to be turned up so bright to have the lightgun register hits that the game is totally unplayable. If anybody has a fix please let me know! I've literally tried this on 2x Xbox's, 3x consumer CRT's, and about 6 BVM/PVM's, including two different Pelican and 3x MadCatz lightguns...
Besides that, love Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, Opration Wolf, Gotcha, Freedom Force on NES.
PS1 have Area 51 and Time Crisis (on a Nyko Super Cobra lightgun which works on both types of games).
PS2 has a TON of cool shooters: Time Crisis 1 and 2 and Crisis Zone (even have a diamondplate reload pedal for these!), Resident Evil Dead Aim (haven't played this yet), Ninja Assault and Vampire night are fun as well.

Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
Amen. TC5 has been arcade exclusive long enough. There's no excuse for the lack of a PS4 version anymore. Ridge Racer 8 doesn't matter even a little bit, until we've got TC5. Hopefully Sega doesn't take too long to bring HotD 5 over. Even if the PS4 version came out a year after, the arcade one would still keep its draw of getting to play in the theater-type cabinet.xxx1993 wrote:Great, now not only do we need a console port of Time Crisis 5, but this baby as well. Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
I'm eagerly waiting for a console port of TC5. There are many reasons why.
Spoiler
Robert Baxter being the villain of the game is one reason why.

The arcade ending leaves a major loose end. That and I'd also like a shot at a PSN leaderboard for this.xxx1993 wrote:I'm eagerly waiting for a console port of TC5. There are many reasons why.

Some extra content with Keith Martin as the player character? No need to make it an FPS like the one in TC4, just do something like TC3's Rescue missions. It could pick up right after Stage 3 of the arcade. I think it'd be fun to fight against Robert as Keith in a reprise of stage 4's boss battle, blocking his sword slashes while also dodging Marc & Luke's fire. Just what's the deal with that island in the ending that Keith, Marc, Luke, & Cathy are going to?
Kinect? KIN NOT.
Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
Anything would work. Just as long as TC5 gets that long awaited console port.

Some more about HOTD Scarlet Dawn.

OK, sounds good. I'm glad Sega is sticking with HOTD4 type guns and not using that mounted crap. Should a PS4 version show up afterward, it's surely a Day One buy.Arcade Heroes wrote: The game is a true sequel to House of the Dead 4
It does NOT use mounted guns but wired, free movement uzis
Gameplay is similar in style to HOTD4 thanks to the automatic guns
Story takes place 3 years after HOTD4, follows Kate Green and Ryan Taylor (brother of James Taylor)
Additional weapons are available (grenades, shotgun, rocket launcher)
Chariot returns
You can choose different routes like in previous HOTD games
Has different modes such as an “explosive sound mode” and “Master Mode”
Graphically it looks very sharp
Is online enabled via Aime and includes a nationwide leaderboard and trophies
Kinect? KIN NOT.
Re: The Light-Gun Games Thread
I hope if HotD Scarlet Dawn comes home it will be released as a collection of all previous mainline HotD games. I have them all but it would be nice to get a better port of the original & just have them all in one place. I'm also not a big fan of the PS3 Move wands, which make HotD 4 feel pretty imprecise. Does the newer PS4 camera alleviate some of the issues with them or is it pretty much the same?
I'm very happy the series is continuing. Hopefully we will see this & Time Crisis 5 come home.

The PlayStation VR Aim controller might be good. I'd take it over the Move wands, and think PS4's newer camera would help.8BA wrote:I hope if HotD Scarlet Dawn comes home it will be released as a collection of all previous mainline HotD games. I'm baffled that we haven't seen Virtua Cop, Time Crisis, Police Trainer or Point Blank make it's move on VR yet? Time Crisis and Police Trainer would be perfect as they already have the ducking mechanic. In VR you would have to physically duck into cover.
Would it ever happen?
