SONIC BOOM BY SEGA 1987

Code: Select all

Name .....................SCOAR....................Round..........Auto

DEL 422,590 10 no auto
Perikles 298,840 8 auto

I've never seen a Hi Sc thread for this half decent SEGA effort, so.....

Default Settings: Normal, 3 lives. As far as I can tell from the Dips, there is only 1 Extra Life which can be set between 30,000 and 80,000, so it makes no difference where you set it.

6 Stages per loop. Gemant has confirmed that this is an infinite loop game.
WR: 10,000,000+α by player OAM-MRX(R) played in 2006.
This is about 40 loops. He must have worked out a perfect route and rinsed-it round and round, or found a bug/milking technique.
EDIT: I finally got the 100% destruction on Stage 1. It awards you a SPECIAL BONUS 10,000.

DEL - 396,290 - Round 10 - no auto.

An opening SCOAR. Just started to beat the first loop. I figure Round 12 will be a bit of a wall....dunno yet :o

Minor STRAT

As far as I have found, the best thing to do in this game is to keep full power (4 Support Fighters) for as long as you can. This makes the bomb strategy.....odd. On several stages its best to use your bombs to keep your support fighters alive. Enemy shots kill your support fighters, so using a bomb to keep them intact is a very good idea, as full power makes quick work of the Stage Bosses, AND full power also makes your bombs more powerful.
There are two sections on Stage 6 where you'll need to go UP the screen and do figure of eights. The rest of the stage - stay at the bottom.

Bomb STRAT
Stage 1 Boss: Use Max powered bombs X2 to quick-kill the Boss AND thereby keep max 4 Support Fighters into Stage 2.
Stage 2: No problems either way.
Stage 3: Use bombs throughout the stage to keep support fighters maxed. Enabling you to encounter the Boss fully powered. No need for bombs on the Boss if fully powered.
Stage 4: Conserve bombs for the Boss. Don't use bombs until the Sub comes down to the right.
Stage 5: An easy stage. Spam all bombs on the Boss as it comes on screen.
Stage 6: Three extra bombs can be gained. Try to conserve them all for the Last Boss's 2nd and final form.

A question:
* Can the stanchion with the crane on the right side of the Stage 2 Boss be destroyed? When shot it makes the destruction sound, so you would assume it can be destroyed. I've tried to kill it for a few minutes, but no luck so far.
EDIT: The Stage 3 Boss is good for milking, but with 1 extra life per game, I figure its not worth milking and suiciding on it.
Current score is 422,000. Need to bust past that ST2-4 Sub :?

My humble contribution:

Perikles - 298,840 - Round 8 - Autofire on

Wasn't even aware of this game until you created this topic and just knew I had to have "Sonic Boom" on my 1CC list sooner or later. Thanks for your initiative, it's a pretty fun game in spite of the glacial movement speed of the ship, it has that Flak Attack quality of not being particularly special, yet quite addictive.

I tried it out with invicibility enabled, even if you sit on top of the thing with autofire the boss will time out before you can destroy that contraption, it's indestructible.

Thanks Perikles. Well done on figuring out ST6 & thanks for double checking the indestructibility of the right side of the ST2 crane.

I increased my score a couple of months ago, a bit. The ST10 Submarine gets a bit too up close and personal :?
