CPS1 Battery swap in battery holder without support battery

Hello,

Is it possible to swap the battery on a CPS1 board with battery holder while it's running ? Or do you have to do the swap with a support battery when the game is turned off ? I'm asking this because I read somewhere that even if the CPS1 game is running, you suicide it if you remove and put a new battery in the holder without a support battery attached ? However other persons claim you can do the swap without support battery as long as the game is running in the process...
So who's right, who's wrong ?

I think I did my holdered KOTR with the power on and no helper but it was a few years ago, and I can't clearly remember now....
