Questions that do not deserve a thread
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
VGA to HDMI adapter to use with the GBS 8200? Any recommendations?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Looks like my old post got buried, I've still got a couple of questions!
1. Has the bug I found with the XRGB Mini's colour decoding been fixed yet? It looked like there was something in the patch notes to do with it, and that's awesome if it has.
2. I've been reading up about the OSSC, and it looks awesome. Does it have to be paired with a DVDO, or would running it through the Mini's HDMI in suffice? What exactly are the benefits of the DVDO?
3. I know it's a polarising issue, but does the OSSC have the ability to change the width of the image so that SNES pixels can be correctly square and display at 8:7? Yoshi's Island drives me insane with the ovals on 4:3, and while I'm not going to look for an argument over what is correct, it's nice to have options.
thanks!

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Currently the pixel optimized mode scales 4x horizontal and 3x vertical, but pretty sure additional options can be added in firmware. Alternatively, I think one can adjust this with the advanced features already, but I haven't looked into it myself. E.g. the 320x240 optimized mode scales 3x in both directions, so by adjusting pixel sampling and active area, the 8:7 ratio should be achievable.Jademalo wrote: 3. The above is for line triple modes, but I think line double can be similarly tweaked, as a user did for Amiga. Note that it will be up to monitor compatibility if it is able to be displayed. And better to wait for profiles anyway, slated for next firmware release.
You should start a thread in videogameperfection forums for further discussion!

I'm still in the queue to order one, so I expect by the time I get my hands on one profiles will be implemented.
I've been hesitant to ask about it too much, I know it's a topic that a lot of people are fairly passionate about in one way or the other, lol. I've posted a thread though, hopefully the reaction is positive.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
A guy I know has unearthed his old Viewsonic P95f+ monitor and he's interested in selling it. However, he doesn't know how much to ask for, and I have no idea how much it's worth. I've seen it mentioned only once in the Reddit CRT speclist page as:
ViewSonic P95f+:-----VGA, 19" Max Resolution 2048 x 1536, 110kHz (probably the best 19" for high res/refresh I've researched other than the Iiyama pro454 but goodluck finding that)
Anyone know much about this monitor?

Would getting a plasma TV (to replace the Insignia LCD in the living room) off Craigslist to watch movies and TV shows on be a good investment?

DVDO's aren't a necessity, they're just a nice thing to have on hand. OSSC will probably work great just by themselves for most people. including one gives you enhanced de-interlacing options, height and width adjustments, aspect ratio correction, underscan and overscan correction, color correction. upscaling most resolutions to 1080p, very fast scaling of progressive sources (6ms for most sources). and probably quite a few other things I'm forgetting (check out some brochures on the various models),Jademalo wrote: 2. as far as the OSSC+FrameMeister or other XRGB processors are concerned, you could probably do most of that with them as well, although the downside with chaining anything on the mini is its inherent 24ms of input lag added to whatever it processes. another downside to the mini is its very mediocre 480p processing. and that would probably mangle the beautiful 240p line double output from the OSSC. however, the line 240p triple output should be okay. not sure about any of the other OSSC output modes or what effect the mini would have on them. might want to ask FBX or retroRGB as I remember they did some tests with the mini and the OSSC around the same time.
depends on how old the plasma TV is, type of programs usually watched in the living room. and how much you worry about burn-in and other plasma display issues.atheistgod1999 wrote:Would getting a plasma TV (to replace the Insignia LCD in the living room) off Craigslist to watch movies and TV shows on be a good investment?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
People combine DVDO scalers with OSSC because they compliment itself very well. The DVDO scalers have terrible 240p scaling, but extensive image controls outside of that. The OSSC line triples 240p to 720p, negating the main disadvantage of the DVDO scalers entirely.Blair wrote:DVDO's aren't a necessity, they're just a nice thing to have on hand. The XRGB-mini however has excellent 240p scaling. It's disadvantages are that its laggy, it's analog to digital conversion makes for a noisy picture, it's slow to switch resolution and it has somewhat bad colors. The OSSC only negates one of those and it also negates the excellent 240p scaling.
OSSC and XRGB-mini are better kept separate and used according to need (perfect scaling vs low latency) unless you have a very specific setup. Personally I would sell the XRGB-mini to buy a DVDO, but a XRGB-mini can still be pretty good to have around for perfect integer scaling and for outputting to picky capture cards.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
What do you guys think of the JVC consumer CRTs from the early 2000s? Specifically a AV-32320 model. I looked up the specs and it seems nice (700 line count, YPrPr input), but you guys know a TON more about CRTs than I do. I broke my 32" sony this weekend trying to RGB mod it......deciding to go the route of SCART to Component YPbPr converter instead.
Speaking of converters, would you go with one of these or that generic SCART to Y-U-V converter? I remember the guy who built these posting on the forum about it but I couldn't find the thread. Looks to be good quality

EDIT: I found the thread, but there wasn't really any info to be found there. The unit looks to be well-made, but the picture of the TV screen image on his ebay isn't doing him any favors.....hard to tell if the resulting image is any good or not LOL

Even if they're still LCDs, will brand-name ones have better picture quality than Insignias?

I have a cheap csy 2100 knockoff and it works just fine for my CRTs. I think CRTs might be more forgiving with them in general.Shoryukev wrote:What do you guys think of the JVC consumer CRTs from the early 2000s? Specifically a AV-32320 model. Also, the JVCs are pretty nice. I've been hopelessly searching for one here for years.

The technology type of the set usually matters less than the brand or vintage. That said, it still often comes down to specific models.atheistgod1999 wrote:Even if they're still LCDs, will brand-name ones have better picture quality than Insignias?

That's good to hear, I might just get the knockoff then.Einzelherz wrote:I have a cheap csy 2100 knockoff and it works just fine for my CRTs. I think CRTs might be more forgiving with them in general.

I found this JVC on craigslist for $25, really hoping the guy answers me back. I noticed in the online literature for it that it has a 2 line comb filter....I know having the 3D comb makes a huge difference with composite signals, but does that matter when I'm using component/YPbPr? I'm hoping it doesn't
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
It depends on the specific model, but Insignia doesn't actually make anything themselves. I looked into them a few years ago when I bought my 40" Insignia LCD for my bedroom, turns out they just buy outdated components from other manufacturers and re-case them in a rebranded shell. If this statement still holds true, you're basically getting last year's model TV but still a decent product. I was able to look up the model number of the TV I bought and deduce that the panel was made by LG. It wasn't their top of the line panel, and it wasn't the latest version....but it was still a decent TV and it was dirt cheap.atheistgod1999 wrote:Even if they're still LCDs, will brand-name ones have better picture quality than Insignias?
Having said that, there is more to an LCD than the panel itself. Backlighting is important, as is the OSD. Do your research about contrast ratio (not dynamic, those numbers are BS) and response time (color, not grey to grey) and you'll be just fine.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Anyone have a good recommendation for a DVD player that outputs in RGB instead of (or in addition to) component?
I am looking for something other than a farouja, which is a nice player, but they are older and refuse to to play many newer DVDs. Also looking for only US or region unlockable.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
From my understanding comb filters are specifically for combined signals, thus the combing out of the individual lines. On a component input (YUV or RGB) it shouldn't be involved.Shoryukev wrote:That's good to hear, I might just get the knockoff then.Einzelherz wrote:I have a cheap csy 2100 knockoff and it works just fine for my CRTs. Any opinions on which 1 slot makes a good CMVS? From what I read of the different boards on hardMVS, I'm leaning towards the MV-1C, since I'd like to fit it along with the supergun hardware into an AES proportioned case (maybe external power, if needed). Are there any reasons to go with any of the other revisions?
Cart orientation isn't that big a deal; I can desolder and re-position the daughterboard if needed (I'm aware of the number of pins lol). Any other features requiring minor modification are even more non-factors. I'd prefer a socketed bios though it's not enough to make me not go with the 1C.
Anyone order off eBay from a seller like this? $80 US about the going rate?

I've been looking into superguns and Neo Geo lately, haven't made a decision onto which 1-slot I want....but http://www.jamma-nation-x.com/jammax/tutorials.html has a ton of information.KnuckleheadFlow wrote:Any opinions on which 1 slot makes a good CMVS? My main dilemma is I want to use at least a few other arcade games that are JAMMA....so I might go with one of the MVS motherboards that have mono sound and a standard JAMMA pinout instead of the kinda oddball pinout that has stereo.
I haven't ever bought from an ebay seller like that, but that looks like a good price if the products are legitimate.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Has anyone had experience with an Extron CVC (100, 200, 300) unit? They convert component to RGB. Wondering if there are comments on the image quality?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I've got a few rgb crts, a plasma tv, an extron matrix switch and an extron in1508 scaler. Should I upscale the signal from the switch to the plasma through the in1508 or let the tv do the upscaling? Mostly 240p. Does anyone have experience with this scaler and how bad will it look?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
What are the limitations of HDMI -> SDI on a BVM?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
most likely off-spec refresh rates. I haven't tried it, but I can imagine that SDI doesn't play well with anything than standard NTSC (or PAL) refresh rates.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Has anyone had any experience importing an Extron switch from the states? The one I ordered was stopped at the international depot in America and sent back to the seller, and all eBay can tell me is that either the seller packed it stupidly, didn't properly inform them of the contents, or eBay decided a switcher is something they can't ship overseas. Local ones are orders of magnitude more expensive, so one from America is really my only option.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
So, I ship and receive electronics internationalally for work, and the most frequent cause of issue is improper customs harmonization codes. That would be on the seller to fill it out right, then include the tariff in the shipping. (Or hold the receiver responsible on delivery)Chomolonzo wrote:Has anyone had any experience importing an Extron switch from the states? I seriously doubt they refused it on the grounds that it's a switcher.
Try a different shipper maybe? Also communicate with them about customs and whatnot, make sure they know what to do. If it's a smaller seller, it may just be inexperience.

I happened to pick up an Extron VSC 500 a couple months ago. I'm wanting to run a signal from my computer into it, and then through an RGB interface in order to get a 240p output on my PVM. I'm looking at getting the Extron RGB 160xi, would this work well for what I'm trying to do?
I'm also not sure, how would I connect the VSC to the RGB interface? Would I be connecting buffered monitor output (VGA) from the VSC to the RGB Interfaces Analog input (VGA)?

How about hooking a Dreamcast to a TV without a VGA input? Would a Toro box be part of the answer?
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
