Everybody raves about that one, but i found it to be quite poor if not outright dreadful in parts. Best X-Men film for me is X2. That was when Bryan Singer still hadn't forgotten how to make a movie in between buggering nubile young men or whatever he does in his spare time.

Morgan (2016) - Luke Scott

This film has three veteran "A" list actors (two of whom, I would consider to be very fine actors). They appear for a total of about 5 minutes in the film and never together. You see where this is going?
The films main star/character is played by Anya Taylor-Joy who, after The Witch (2015) became serious hot property.

Now, what is she (and the other three, with their token appearances) doing in this fucking turkey? Luke "my dad is ridley" Scott. Get it?
The film also "features" a collection tv actor types who would be thrown out of a serious screen test for been so eminently punchable.

Apologies for the indulgent rant. Its about the only thing of value I'm going to salvage from this farce.

Luke Scott. A name to remember.

(Almost forgot. The always serene, Michelle Yeoh is also in the film. Pure class. Wasted :( )

Deadpool: **1/2

Looking back in the thread I see reaction to this was rather mixed, with some people absolutely loving it and others not caring for it. I finally got around to watching it and tend more toward the latter. For something that's allegedly supposed to be a comedy it sure seems to spend a lot of time wallowing in dark and depressing stuff and ultimately comes more across as trying too hard than anything. The end result is an R-rated movie that feels like you would have to be a 14 year old to enjoy it.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

An exceptional concentration of weirdness, with many memorable scenes worthy of Tim Burton's talent.

However, what could be a genuinely dramatic story about heroism, sacrifice and growing up suffers from many bad clichés, both in action (e.g. an insufficiently dead bad guy returns, surprising characters; the mysterious power of the mysterious twins is revealed in the hour of need) and in character development (apart from the main love story, the initially hostile "peculiar child" who learns to respect the protagonist and the stupid father who doesn't understand him are barely tolerable).

There's also great fuzziness about how one of the most complicated versions ever of
Spoiler
time travel
really works, with apparent contradictions and ambiguities in the most fundamental plot structures, but getting into trouble with an ambitious attempt to be original is better than boring ideas.

Rewatched The Neon Demon. Absolutely riduclous, absolutely sublime. Like Suspiria being throttled by the perfect Bret Easton Ellis adaptation no one has ever been able to make. The ultimate manifestation of a true cinema of the gaze. Definitely going to use it as a case study next time I teach a cinematography unit.

I feel like watching some horror films (and before anyone says I can't, remember that I turned 17 almost a month ago, so even the MPAA considers me old enough). It has to be on Netflix or Hulu Plus, because I don't feel like spending money and getting one magically would take too long. Any suggestions?

Arrival - 2016 -

Went into this thinking it was a big production, turned out it felt like an indie movie. It was refreshing. I also loved that the audience reaction was so negative after the ending, like they had wasted their time and money, while I enjoyed the movie and got my ticket for free. 7/10

Crimson Peak - 2015

Aesthetically pleasing, okayish story but a bit too predictable. 6.5/10

No idea if it's on those services or not, but you can never go wrong with John Carpenter's The Thing (1982). A multifaceted horror masterpiece - psychologically hefty with paranoia, spectacularly gruesome in alien terror.

David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) deserves similar acclaim in the body horror subgenre. Authentic tragedy with astonishing practical effects.

I like to chuck in The Blob (1986), too, for a neat trifecta of quality 1980s remakes of iconic 50s horror. It's appropriately much more lightweight and "creature feature" than the above, but by no means any less well-done. Pretty safe bet that if you like one of these you should try the others, too.

Other than your parents, who really minds what you watch? Not taking a jab at you being young or anything, it's just that mentality is weird to me.
That being said, what BIL posted is pretty sound.

No one cares what I watch; it's just that I can't get over the fact that I'm now officially old enough to watch them and play M-rated games. Now I can watch them in theaters by myself, for instance 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

It just boggles my mind people give a damn about your age to do certain stuff. Here, even nowadays, no one would ask your id card to see if you are old enough to watch a certain movie or buy games that are rated to a certain age.
I knew back in 2004 a guy working on a general electronic store who got scolded by his boss for not selling GTA San Andreas to a kid who looked 12-13. Said kid shrugged his shoulders and said he would try another store.
Same with booze, recently they pushed a law to forbid beer (not wine lol, since the minister responsible was the owner of the largest wine conglomerate in the country) to be sold to people under 16. Retailers after a year said kids would either get an older friend to buy it for them, or their near rivals would sell to kids anyway.

When I was 14, I was at Gamestop with my dad getting Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, when the guy behind the counter gave my dad this unsure look (like he was a bad parent) and said "are you aware this game is rated M?", and my dad said "yes", so then he started reading off the ESRB tags ("strong violence", "mild language", etc.) on the back of the box.

If your dad was ok with it, the responsibility now lies with him, so the employee is just getting on his high horse by reading the tags.
Mind you, i wouldn't sell stuff like alchool, porn or overly violent movies or games to small kids, like 11 or less, and if parents were with them and made a fuss about it, that makes them bad parents, no question about it.
Kids older than that, they are smart enough to get what they want, even if they have no idea about the consequences of it.

A nice candidate for HDR 4K blu ray if anyone has the tech. This movie is Jaws crossed with Castaway with a 2016 spin (go pro cams, iphones etc). The lead actress is stunningly beautiful, the movie starts slow but gets there in the end. The colours on this movie are amazing with the bright golden beaches, green and blue tinted shallow waters. Some dramatic surf capturing as well.

8/10.
Wat movie did you watch? The Shallows I saw was three parts garbage.

Agreed that the movie is shallow :D . But from a technical standpoint it pops on the screen which kept my attention. Which is why I rated it technically rather than its creative side. I do actually try to find some merit in all productions.

Suicide squad - Blu ray

Watched the extended cut and couldn't remember seeing anything different. Must be something since it is resident on a disc all of its own with the theatrical cut also on its own disc.

I noticed everyone tries to over do the whole body language thing in this movie. Everyone is swaying from side to side, the croc always growls when on camera, the Diablo character always has this gangster talk thing going on, the Japanese samurai lady walks with swag all the time and Deadshot always tilts his head gangster style. So yeah, a bit of rinse and repeat going on through the whole movie.

That said its entertaining, the soundtrack is booming through the subwoofer and it does have some comedy one liners keeping it real.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Doctor Strange was the first time I have ever seen Mads Mikkelsen in a Hollywood production, or actually any movie or series that wasn't Danish (unless you count Valhalla Rising)

And I'm not sure what his performance is normally like in productions like this (I guess I'll find out when I go see Rogue One on Thursday), but it definitely did not feel like him at all. He's usually a great actor - a bit one note but good at what he does, he especially excels at being awkward and pompous which makes him a really good comedic actor - it's actually strange for me to see him in a movie that's not a comedy.

He was completely uninteresting in Doctor Strange for sure, and his Danish accent kept throwing me off, it does not fit his character at all.

When local non-American actors end-up 'winning' a role in some Hollywood movie they don't play their usual game at all.
Because they're not allowed to and they're here for the money anyway.

EDIT: some exceptions for those native english countries, who typically play 'the posh britbong', 'the abnormal aussie', 'the drunk irish cop', etc because US audience.
They might be hired to play their usual character though very exaggerated.

In defense of the clerk, he may have thought your dad was expecting 90s Tomb Raider, which are lighthearted games about being Indiana Jones with giant tits.

Not the new rebooted version which is all about watching your masturbation fantasy girl die horrifically gruesome deaths over and over and over again.

watched a bunch of stuff with the lady lately from princess and the frog (we just got back from nola and it was a nice follow up), muppet christmas carol, and then my choice of die hard.

we're going to see la la land on thursday and I can't wait. the soundtrack is up on spotify and it's enjoyable - especially the jazzy instrumental songs. oscar-bait for sure.

people love or hate wes anderson but you have to give it to him that his style is so aesthetically pleasing. I'm in the boat of people who love him. he did a H&M commercial recently which really got me in the mood for christmas.

Sounds about right. You can watch it on video and get about as much out of it. BUT 1) It's an Xmas movie. 2) It's filmed in Chicago. So, it's got all that going for it. If you like TJ Miller in Silicon Valley you should enjoy him here. Something tells me he's going to play a likable dipshit his whole career.

inside llewyn davis is underrated from the fans (I think)
and then I try to rank them and I can't... the man who wasn't there, miller's crossing, hudsucker proxy, no country for old men, fargo, o brother where art though, a serious man, barton fink, and the big lebowski I'd put on the same tier. I'd probably put burn after reading, true grit, and hail caesar on a lower tier, and I haven't seen the rest.. :/

I've yet to see Inside Llewyn Davis, but I have the Criterion on my Amazon Xmas List (b/c why not?). I loved True Grit (watched it recently), and I thought Burn After Reading was sorely underrated. Yet to see Hail Caesar. Been busy. Perhaps this winter. :)
