I picked up a cheap, Gen1 Genesis last week and just had a chance to try it out. I'm getting these fuzzy, horizontal lines in the picture. The image itself is not rolling but the fuzzy lines are slowly rolling upward. I've done some searching today but haven't found anything about this exact problem so I was hoping someone here would be able to help me out. Here is a little info
Monitor: Sony PVM20L5
Composite Cable
Aftermarket adapter
The monitor works perfectly, I know it is not the problem. It is flawless with other systems. The Genesis and game are both clean. I can shake the video cable and it does not change anything. I have RGB cables on order, but no others to test right now. With this info, could someone suggest a direction to go from here in troubleshooting? Thanks.

Prolly the AC adapter. Bad ones introduce noise.

Re: Horizontal lines in Genesis video
You know, I searched nearly all day yesterday and didn't find anything. And then, while I was waiting for this topic to be approved, I found a thread about the adapter noise. I am going to pick up an original adapter and see if that solves the problem. Thanks for the advice.kamiboy wrote:Prolly the AC adapter. Bad ones introduce noise.

if you can, try to replace the capacitor in the old ac adapter first. they are inexpensive and its usually the problem.

Re: Horizontal lines in Genesis video
The adapter I have is a cheap aftermarket one. I found an OEM adapter cheaply and it should be in today. Hopefully that will fix the problem. If it does, I will be sure to update with a pic of the bad aftermarket adapter so no one else wastes time or money on it.mvsfan wrote:if you can, try to replace the capacitor in the old ac adapter first. they are inexpensive and its usually the problem.

Id also replace the cap in the OEM power supply. A lot of them are starting to leak now.

Re: Horizontal lines in Genesis video
I wouldn't. Any cheap after market adapter that introduces noise into the video signal is not worth the effort. Only good for a landfill.

Re: Horizontal lines in Genesis video
You were right, kamiboy. The cheap adapter was causing noise. Plugged in the OEM adapter and it's a crystal clear picture. I threw the cheap one away as it is obviously trash. Here's a picture of it as a warning to others. This sticker has the only identifying marks. Otherwise, it's just a black brick about 1/3 the size of the OEM adapter. Throw it away if you get one!

OEM is An original Sega-1602 adapter that came with the genesis. Its not cheap, its well made. and the capacitor almost always fixes any problem its having besides a short or burnt winding on the transformer.
