Bugs all up in ma house! My Greenhouse, that is.

Didn't know what to expect from this one, but was quickly hooked and had to have it. Hectic single-screen platformer/gallery STG hybrid, with the airtight play and instant arcade punch I love from early Nintendo on FC. All about that Game B, baby.

Also, Konami RESPONSE SOUND SYSTEM for PARODIC SHOOTING GAME get:

Image

More of a completionist's pick with the Saturn redux bagged, but I love Konami's 16-bit stuff like little else and this felt conspicuously absent. Always admired the largess of attempting an original SFC Parodius with a new gen afoot, then giving it a second chance and well-utilised performance boost on 32-bit. Lots of STG TLC there. To be honest I think it plays pretty nicely for the most part, but you'll definitely hit SFC Gradius III / PCE Gradius levels of slowdown when the rank heats up. ;3

Donkey Kong 3 is good stuff. Definitely try the AC version if you can find it. It is more intense in some areas and has some nice touches missing from the NES port. Creepy death animation FTW!

One neat thing I found about the AES. Its PAL mode plays correctly on my HDTV without flipping. I tried Super Turrican Plus and Mario Bros Classic (the later EU release with more stuff from the arcade) and both play at the correct speed.

Edit: I also found out something interesting with Rainbow Islands EU, it doesn't speed up as much as I expected to in NTSC and doesn't seem to glitch up in NTSC like Parasol Stars. Music still sounds better in PAL, though.

It's the Cave Shop Xbox360 edition. To my knowledge what you see is what you got: Platinum Edition of Espa II BL, 2 stick posters, 2 sticker sheets, a mouse mat and a keyring. Until recently I knew of this and Akai Katana but a month back a Deathsmiles box showed up on YJ, though without the logo on the box.

EDIT: thx for the AK pics, Casey :) Still looking for the AK kit btw ;)

Never heard of a 360 DS Cave shop edition so it was probably a Japanese Doujini special .

Saw it so cheap in a store that I couldn't resist buying another copy (my first one is not here as of late). It's the E.T. for dad-aged men (although my mom seemed just as enthralled by it as I was).

Image

Quite pricey for a change, but this one's actually pretty rare (from what I gather).

Image

And to accompany, one of those cheap DVD hauls I've had a blast doing recently.

My weekly retro store run yielded some decent finds this time. Got a dogbone NES controller for $10, it needs a little bit of cleaning but I've never had one of these before so I'm interested to compare it to my other controllers. Picked up some common games while I was there, they didn't have anything that jumped out at me so I just went through and picked a handful of games I've been meaning to check out at some point.

Super Dodge Ball
The Little Mermaid
The Battle of Olympus
8 Eyes
Hydlide

I played all of them last night (after taking them all apart and cleaning them LOL), the ones that stood out to me are Super Dodge Ball and the Little Mermaid. Little Mermaid is classic Capcom Disney license stuff for the NES, good controls and catchy music. Super Dodge Ball is pretty basic, but it has something about it that is very satisfying and addicting. There is tons of sprite flicker, but tons of players on screen at once....so for the NES it's kinda impressive. The Battle of Olympus seems like a very deep game in the vein of Zelda2 or Wonder Boy in Monster World, I'm interested to put in some more time with it. 8 Eyes and Hydlide didn't really appeal to me on the surface, but I'll give them a better chance before they go on the shelf and I forget about them. 8 Eyes seemed like I needed to look up an FAQ on the controls, as I couldn't really figure out what I was doing in controlling the characters bird....oh well. PS I know the picture of the cartridges is upside down, I reuploaded it 3 times and it keeps doing that for some reason LOL

All in all not a bad haul considering there wasn't anything new and exciting when I walked in. It still amazes me how many games there are for the NES that I haven't played before that are actually good. I have probably 200+ NES carts and there's still tons of them out there that are great games.

Nice GETs with Super Dodgeball, The Battle Of Olympus and 8 Eyes (I have always had a soft spot for the latter, even though most people don't like it. I rented it as a kid and enjoyed the exploration aspect and opening switches with your bird buddy. The knife's reach IS a little maddening though).
TBOO seems really fun, I need to get this one.

I personnally don't like the dogbone controller, hehe

I've never used a dogbone before so I'm not ready to comment, but it does feel different. Even if it proves to be awesome I probably won't use it much since it detracts from the nostalgic aura that emanates from the original controllers. Who knows though, the shape of it is rather comfortable.

Dogbones aren't that good, IMO. I have issues climbing the vines in Super Mario USA with them (easy to accidentally go diagonal).

my beef with the dogbone is the angle at which A and B are positioned :

A is higher than B on the controller, but it should be lower, so as to mimick the angle of where the thumb lands on the controller

It's been way too long to comment in any detail, but I remember having a good time with Olympus and its expansive sidescroller world... the endgame in particular stands out in memory.

Broderbund seemed to like localising those extra-large action-adventures that could feel impossibly vast to an 80s kid (see also The Guardian Legend and Legacy of the Wizard). Kinda makes me want to revisit Olympus's FC version in case it's worth adding to theirs for a spiritual trilogy, haha.

I remember FunkDoc commenting in his Batman: ROTJ run that the dogbone's diagonals were liable to produce accidental slide attacks, so ag99's thing about SMB2 vines doesn't surprise me.

I like the original controller, but couldn't pass on this one at ten bucks. It's over-hyped just like every other item out there deemed "rare" for sure haha.

Yeah that is a bit of an odd choice, you'd think since it's similar to the SNES design they would have made it with the button position of the Y and B buttons. It would be much more comfortable that way.

Guardian Legend is an awesome game! I love the blend of genres in it! Legacy of the Wizard is really cool too, I picked that one up awhile back and thought it was a cool idea with the different family members having different strengths and weaknesses. I need to pull these two out of my drawer and put the time in to actually play them all the way through.

Hoping there's no issue with hotlinking Facebook images here.

With this new (edit: Beautiful!) acquisition, there are no more games left that I absolutely need in my arcade collection.
Well, except maybe DeathSmiles.

One of those have the art cover from the X-1999 manga. The two sides of Kamui. Nice.

All these games were surprisingly cheap, so I guess it's still possible to score some good retro deals. Also, thanks @rancor for the candy included with the MD games! :)
