Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
The inability to save in the penultimate and final dungeons makes for a decidedly thrilling crawl, especially if you chance upon a Red, Yellow, or Green Dragon.
Personally I found navigating the Dark World more unnverving than any of the bosses protecting the crystals - they're trivial if you stock up on shuriken. (Abusing the magic duplication glitch for gil isn't required to do this, but it helps.) Then again, I elected to skip the chests containing ribbons, knowing I wouldn't need them for the Cloud of Darkness.
Speaking of the Cloud of Darkness, there's another issue with the DS remake. Having the Cloud's tendrils cast magic makes the battle more annoying than it needs to be, and bosses with multiple segments weren't introduced until FFIV anyway.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I realized I was progressing so slowly in Demon's Souls because I wasn't even paying attention to the game because I didn't really like it that much because the visuals are dull, controls are kinda floaty, and the camera kinda sucks. I hate doing this all the damn time:

Yes, I know I should cut my fingernails.
I decided to play other games until I actually wanted to play Demon's Souls again.
I decided to finish Crash Bandicoot because I was almost done when I last played, and the lab level (and the barrel level I played over a month ago) made the camera in Demon's Souls look great by comparison; the placement (makes depth perception extremely hard) is so bad that it had to have been intentional.

That's okay. I was planning to let it sit until December then try it again to see if they patched it into something somewhat decent anyway. I like the music.
But for anyone who bought it off steam, getting your refund is ABSOLUTELY the right decision. Do it!

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Finished Odallus recently. Pretty good game, though I was somewhat annoyed toward the end looking for those secrets. It's no fun repeating a stage over and over again looking for that one secret you missed.
Anyway, beat the game and unlocked Veteran mode. I was looking forward to the extra challenge until I realized you don't recover health between stages anymore. I can see why they did that but you can simply abort the stage when you're low on health, go back to stage 1 and pick up the pork shank about halfway through. So beating this mode will feel much more like a grind now. Not sure if I'm willing to do that.

although bloodborne has been my favorite as of now, demon's souls was my favorite > the entire souls series. it's actually the one I've played the most. on the asian version I believe I got to new game++++++, and I beat the US version three times while nabbing the platinum. there's some kind of charm that was lost in the dark souls games.
Spoiler
the NPCs (based on dialogue alone) are much more interesting than the rest of the series. stockpile thomas who is spiraling through depression, the lazy son-of-a-bitch biorr of the twin fangs, the badass yurt the silent chief, even boldwin the blacksmith. "with your souls, I can eke out a living, and with my weapons, you can go on living. not a bad deal, eh?"
the world tendency system, albeit overly confusing when the asian version first released (there were no walkthroughs), can be tinkered and used to your advantage to spawn new enemies and new weapons/armor. you can use so many different paths through the stages to take advantage of the tendency since they're are many paths available at your hub as soon as you clear 1-1.
the types of bosses were a little different too... cutting the sky with a sky sword to kill a gigantic air beast and playing the boss in another player's game. I really wish some of the concepts were replicated throughout the series.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Completed castlevania bloodlines on my genesis for the first time this weekend. Lots of fun!
Still playing Chrono Trigger on my SNES, but I haven't been putting much time into it lately. I picked it back up sunday, and after having to look at a walkthrough to figure out where I was supposed to go....I noticed I am almost at the end. Might as well polish that one off. It's a fantastic game, but my life has been hectic lately and I haven't had proper time to set aside for gaming.
I've been casually playing SMB2 on my NES, I actually enjoyed this game a lot as a kid even though it was different. There are a lot of "2s" in the NES library that are black sheep...but I rather enjoy most of them (Zelda-2 is one of my all-time favorite NES games).

Playing Stardew Valley because I'm bored of everything else. I keep fantasizing about having a social life, which keeps fucking me up in video games because I'm not concentrating. Maybe this will be a temporary fix.
Also: Yeah, I'm not really into Demon's Souls, but I'm afraid of stopping because I'd look like a pussy.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I personally would have started with Dark Souls instead of Demon's Souls.
Demon's is good but I find the level design a little blander overall. There's a few high spots (shadowmen stages are really cool with tons of diverse enemies and environmental hazards). However Dark Souls is a much better polished game that's easier to get into once you get past the initial hurdle of its methodical pacing and action IMO.

Yeah, agreed.
I would like to note that the Souls series tends to "click" with people after a while, so it might be worth revisiting when you find yourself more enthused. Reactions to the series (myself included) often go like:
>eh it's good enough I guess.

Oh ok, I'm an idiot. Losing all lives in Odallus isn't a gameover, you just lose all your money and can continue normally. I thought you'd lose your savefile or something like that.Ruldra wrote:Finished Odallus recently. Pretty good game, though I was somewhat annoyed toward the end looking for those secrets. I'm giving veteran mode a try and it's definitely harder. More and new enemies appear and some relic positions were changed. Boss fights are super annoying though. They're exactly the same as normal mode but now random enemies keep appearing during the fight. In the underground temple there are these flying skulls that home in on you pretty quickly and takes 3 hits to die. Now they keep spawning all the time during the boss fight. Doesn't make it more challenging imo, just frustrating.
And then in the aqueducts level there's this part with regenerating blocks that you need to destroy and move quickly, and right next to them is a piranha plant that bites and pulls you back. This part is pissing me off.
I like the game but this mode is just making me angry.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
So I rushed through FFV Steam on another computer just so I wouldn't have the fiesta run incomplete. I still need a new computer, but won't be for a while. Until then, I'll just be using this one. No way I was going to leave a run that had both Chemist and Bard incomplete if I could avoid doing so. At least this computer is reliable at the moment so I can actually do stuff on it.
Now that the fiesta run is cleared, I've finally started training the other jobs so that I'll have abilities and stats that I need to get through Sealed Temple(a dungeon I've said elsewhere that I never wish to go through again because it's more annoying than hard, but Steam achievements).
Also went through Wings of Vi on Mortal Turbo(75 FPS instead of 60 FPS) Doomed(1 hit death). Doomed really wasn't as frustrating as I thought it would be, but I haven't learned Demon well enough to go for the Demon Doomed run that only 9 or 10 people on the leaderboard have even managed. I'll probably start up a Demon Turbo soon since if I go through Demon Doomed, I'd rather it be with Turbo on and I'd need a file to practice on. Plus I can't exactly try for Doomed Demon when I haven' even managed to flawless the bosses on Demon yet.

Dead to Rights II. Like the previous game it opens with a well-produced FMV, but this time it's just a fight in a gas station, instead of the first title's classic town hall terrorists with a bomb. Looks like that sets the pace for a low-key affair.

Playing via pcsx2 instead, blegh. It's...very repetitive. Also getting to be crazy difficult. Much better detail than the original game, but...I wouldn't say it has better scenery.
