RGB Nintendo 3DS/DS and region modding questions

Post by tacoguy64 »

So I have my eye on the Super Famicom Edition New 3DS LL but I have a few questions about it.

http://www.play-asia.com/new-nintendo-3 ... /13/70a257

I want to be able to play 3DS/DS games on my bigger rgb screens. What are some of the better mods for that? Also the other question is about region modding. Would it be a good idea to region mod the system to play my US games or should I just buy Japanese games for it and leave it as is? What would be some good games to import for the system? Keep in mind i don't know any Japanese.

Capture kits appear to be $300+ and are only intended for digital video capture (and are probably very laggy). Region modding is only available through homebrew, which requires that the stock firmware you receive is below a certain threshold.

I might be missing info on newer mods, but it's a huge investment as far as I know. Is it worth $600+ and a gamble on the firmware version to you?

I know that there are streamers who play looking at the preview window, so the delay can't be that bad. There's also the option to use CFW and stream the video over WiFi, but it won't be 60fps. Especially the lower screen is quite laggy as far as I know.

Also if you want to region mod it you must make sure that the 3DS isn't on the latest firmware. It gets a lot harder to mod a 3DS on the latest firmware. A downgrade from 11.0 to 9.2 (which is needed for CFW) requires another already hacked 3DS.

Overall I don't think that it would be a good idea to import that 3DS edition and mod it.

The latency on DS/3DS capture solutions is reportedly good enough that speedrunners like Romscout don't mind the latency, so it can't be that bad.

That said, the only 3DS model supported by loopy's capture mod (which I understand is the only modder worth using for DS/3DS capture mods as the other guy apparently does terrible work) is the original launch 3DS, not the XL or New 3DS. The model of 3DS supported tends not to be terribly relevant to people because once you're not using the console's own screen, the primary difference between the different models is eliminated, and then many people also opt for a controller mod, making the model of 3DS completely irrelevant since you're neither looking at nor touching the console.

I think going the loopy capture mod on the original 3ds with a controller mod might be the best way to go with playing on an rgb screen. Luckily original 3ds are pretty cheap but the kit is at $200 with installation. The controller mod is only an additional $15 but looks like a difficult mod to attempt. This is still probably the closest one can get to playing 3DS/DS on a bigger monitor. I think it might be worth it with the good library of games I have.

As for the super famicom 3ds, I probably should not region mod it if I do decide on getting it.

So what are the chances of getting an IPS screen on the new Super Famicom New 3DS XL? The screen lottery is so retarded.

If you care at all, I wouldn't even risk importing one. I didn't even know the bottom screens could be IPS as well for at least 2 years- if it will bother you, buy domestically.

I haven't even looked into that whole problem. Didn't they fixed that already? Or is there still an isp lottery going on? Cuz I would hate to get a non ISP screen. Importing is looking less attractive. Are the Japan exclusives good enough to warrant a buy?

That's not a bug or a problem in the eyes of Nintendo. Getting one IPS screen on a N3DS XL is random, getting two extremely rare and good luck finding a normal N3DS with IPS screens. To make it worse, 50% of N3DS consoles have overly loose hinges.

As much as I'd like the Super Famicom 3ds i think I'm gonna have to pass then. If quality was guaranteed then I could feel better about justifying the price but I don't think I want to take on that kind of lottery where the price is too high and the payoff is little.

Think the Wii U DS emulator is probably the best choice (for that side of things at least). Gonna play around with my 480p BNC screen and the Wii U up res hack so I'll post the results when I can.

Does anyone know what signal format the 3DS uses for video? I could open mine up and try to convert it 480p over VGA/HDMI when I have time.

Based on the number of contacts of the LCD connectors in the iFixit Teardown I would guess parallel LVTTL RGB for the bottom screen and LVDS for the top one, but that is just speculation.

Those are the infamous "katsukity" boards. Reportedly worse quality/less reliable, and the guy only speaks Japanese. Upside is that he supports more models than loopy, and has better stock availability.
