What's a good ROMset? I see slowdown in Set 1 by the second stage (boss I think) and especially the third. Is set 2 good?

Set 2 is great. Same enemies as Set 1 but doesn't start at loop 2 enemy fire.

Managed to loop this rather randomly. I should play more.

Erppo - 2,020,380 - 2-4 - YES - MAME (set 2)

Edit: Does the required extend setting mean 300k only or every 300k? If the first, then ignore this since I used the every setting which seems to be the default in MAME.

Slight improvement but it's another loop so yay. These credits are starting to take pretty long.

A somewhat bigger improvement. Most likely the longest credit I've ever played in anything.

So I just found out that v0.149u1 has changed everything yet again. The new set 1 became a clone (now labeled "harder"), and an old clone became the parent. What is now Out Zone set 1 was previously Out Zone set 4 back until before v0.104u5, where it was Out Zone set 3; apparently there was a set 4 even when it was still set 3, which is either a typo or a version I know nothing about. I'm still pretty sure most PCBs people have are what is now labeled (as of v0.149u1) "old set", but if anyone can actually verify what is what beyond a really old MAME statement, please do so.

In any event, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE mention exactly what emulator and romset you used.

Been playing this for the last 2 days, and almost made it to the stage 6 boss on this run, but lost most of my lives at that area where the soldiers pop out from the gates. With the amount of bombs available, I don't think it should be too hard to clear the 1st loop. Subsequent loops are gonna be a challenge.

Will upload the run, have to figure out how many videos will be necessary, I'm going to guess I'll end up with three.

Some astoundingly silly deaths (managed to dunk myself into a pit, for starters ), but also some neat performances throughout (no deaths in loop 6!). Got eight out of the nine Zero Wing ships in the first loop for scoring and a few more afterwards. That's probably my least favourite part about the game, I had quite a few restarts because something went awry there. Random items are also questionable, not getting a speed-up on higher loops will result in bomb spam that is not necessary otherwise. I even got an extend twice, but not in this run. I'm also apparently colour-blind to some degree, I still have massive problems distinguishing the shield from the Super Ball.

Aside from that it's splendid! Love the blazing-fast bullet speeds in later loops, such an intense, fun experience. Reminded me a bit of some of the board games (like StarQuest or Space Hulk) we used to play, given the focus on using terrain to your advantage. High loops are quite tough, checkpoint recovery is always possible, though, splendid design.

The shield icon is a very bright pink, almost white. Use that as reference to tell the two apart.

And by the way, is romset 2 the "standard" one in shmupMAME 4.2?

Should be. ShmupMAME v4.2 fortunately labels the harder version ("broken rank version") and the prototype. I dunno what the other sets are.

I was using 'outzonea' romset, this emulator considers it "old set". I think that's the standard one.

Added.

Yes, that should be correct. I have no idea what the current parent is supposed to be. MAME themselves said that the current outzonea was the vast majority of the Out Zones they found.

I can imagine going back to the game and getting the counterstop, with a few less stupid deaths it shouldn't be a problem to do even with the same amount of stages, although I'd try to get further as well, of course. Will probably not be for quite some time, though.
Ruldra wrote:The shield icon is a very bright pink, almost white. Use that as reference to tell the two apart.
I can usually tell that I'm going to pick up a shield, but whenever I see the Super Ball I'm getting uncertain and then grab it because I don't want to lose out on a shield. Maybe I'm really a bit colour-blind, I knew someone who couldn't tell a blue and a purple die apart visually even though that was quite apparent for everyone else. It's not a huge issue in this game, regardless, you get so many C items that you can usually switch back to your regular weaponry in seconds. It's only problematic if you try to get the Zero Wing ships to spawn and ruin your sequence.

Congrats!

Yes, it was in v0.104u5 that the weird harder version was added (total of three sets). Set 1 in v0.99 (ShmupMAME v3.0b) should be the standard set, while set 2 in v0.99 is either the prototype or just an older set. Why can't MAME just make the standard set the parent and keep it that way?
