Help me find the best NES version

Post by PeterWar »

I currently have a non working NES PAL version and would like to change it for the best NES version possible. I understand that the famicom would be the nº1 choice but I'm just used to the looks of the NES from my childhood.

I've done my fair bit of reading and looks like my best choice would be a region free USA NTSC NES with the real RGB mod (and possibly the stereo mod).

The idea would be to play all my PAL super marios and my PAL The Legend of Zelda natively at 60Hz with the best RGB quality.

Am I in the good direction? if so, where can I get one? :)

Thank you in advance!

Wasn't the very first SMB speed adjusted for PAL countries as well ?

The PAL version of Super Mario Bros was speed adjusted for 50hz. The music was sped up way too fast though. If you play the PAL version on an NTSC nes then you will be playing Super Turbo Bros. :)

Define "best"? For me, the best NES would be an RGB-modded CAN/US NES toploader. I wouldn't want any PAL model, since none of these games were intended for 50Hz play.

For most people who aren't PVM/CRT enthusiasts, I suspect that the RetroUSB AVS will be the easiest/best/cheapest option. HDMI output, PAL/NTSC support, NES/Famicom support, and no ZIF socket.

If you don't care about any game that isn't in the list of 30, it could very well be.

I'm not a big enthusiast of the NES and I think the NES Mini has a fantastic library, aside from no Contra or Castlevania 3.

Don't think the NES mini is for me. You know, it is part of the experience to take your game, put it inside the console... Plus I've investes a good deal
Of money on a Sony BVM CRT.

Is Super Mario Bros the only game optimized for PAL? I also have SMB2, SMB3, The legend of Zelda and Tenis.

I assume I could buy a NTSC NES bundle with SMB1 and play the rest of my PAL games at 60Hz with a region free mod?

The heavily improved re-release of Mario Bros (in the classic series) is as well and there's unfortunately no NTSC counterpart for it. And here's a start for the other titles: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/162560 ... nversions/

I believe Super Turrican (NES one, coded by Manfred Trenz) was. That said, I read it runs at correct speed on US NES (only the music is higher-pitched then, but not even sped up).
