Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Just revisited Battle Circuit and got a no miss clear, sadly no TLB because i forgot about the 1000 coins requirement lol (he's pretty easy anyway).
Pretty fun game although not as polished as some previous games, Yellow is awfully overpowered.

Going to stop Sonic Advance 2 for a bit, since i got my hands on Bioshock. Never played this before, design looks really nice.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Just completed System Shock 1
It was pretty great aside from the meh enemy variety and gunplay. Its level design certainly holds up to this very day, moreso than other games. It did fall kind of flat endgame (probably due lack of budget as usual for LGS, especially when looking at the lack of audiologs in later levels, ther's not even a SHODAN audibly chastising you during the final battle). Though I had a ridiculous amount of medpatches and ammo at the end of the game, maybe playing on a higher difficulty would have fixed that. It has that satisfying point 'n click dungeon crawler design reminiscent of Ultima Underworld which would become more and more bastardized with each new Shock game.
The control scheme and UI aren't that big of a deal, it's actually fairly simple to control using the mouselook mod and was very intuitive at the time. Anyone being unable to learn the controls and UI (save for cyberspace) should be removed from the gene pool immediately.
Here's to hoping that the remake/reboot/remaster/whatever won't screw it up that much with the misplaced focus on horror and possible implementation of RPG mechanics. Near the end of the game you're fighting dozens of misfigured cyborgs with a lightsaber and the futuristic variant of an AK while popping drugs and flying through a Tron-like cyberspace. You will feel powerful as shit later on, that's far from horror game material.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I'm having a blast with Volgarr the Viking. The sprite work is absolutely gorgeous, the mechanics and sound have a real weight to them, and the level design is varied and tight. I've only seen the first two levels though since the game is hard as balls. The second level boss in particular is making me feel like a "beta cuck", to coin a phrase.
The music in the second level reminds me of the Pandora's Temple music from God of War, which is also A Good Thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTnuOtyib-M
Saw a superplay vid that Iconoclast posted on here and it blew my mind. Such a display of skill! It's like watching a world-class shmup replay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aqb6v7afpgc

love earthbound so much. I think I might like mother 3 slightly more, but earthbound is definitely one of my favorite jrpgs. the quirkyness, weirdness, and fun-ness to it hasn't really been matched for me. with mother 3, it's the same quirky type of story but with rhythm-based battle mechanics.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Short stuff: Final Fantasy NES. I decided to start at the beginning. Ouch...PuNES does allow a 5x fast forward option but that's still annoying (no sound, no fine maneuvers or ability to target different enemies in battles, even if you ultimately save time considerably over manually targeting every enemy). I'm at Elfland, guess I'll give it a bit longer before I tap out and look at one of the ports.
I also reinstalled the 3D Realms Anthology and played around with some more stuff. Realms of Chaos is a hilariously unbalanced and nitpicking platformer on the second (!) highest difficulty level, where it adds quite a few more obstacles to success. Embarrassingly enough, the game developers themselves failed to ensure that all the treasure was reachable. Oops! I kicked the difficulty back down to Normal and did pretty well, but with a lot of saving still. It is shameful to have to say it, but even with all its faults and simplistic nature, this is still more fun than playing the original NES Final Fantasy.
Other 3DR Anth. games: Crystal Caves (would be bearable if not for the bad collision tracking and insanely lopsided levels, with huge sections with no difficulty bottlenecked by jumps or enemies requiring incredible precision), Wacky Wheels (sounds good, dumb cast, terrible framerate - pull over and put it in park). Many of the other games on the Anthology are basically variations on these themes. What a shame.
Thief series recap: If roofs are the thieves' highway, mantling out of the level is racing.
I finished Thief Gold on Expert with good scores and almost no item use (aside from rope, and some goodies to kill ghoulies), though with lots of bludgeoning, savegame abuse, and a couple walkthroughs at the ready to make sure I'm not missing things - it'd suck to miss out on what the game's got hidden away. I'm still pretty good in my guesses so I'm not just blundering through. Now I'm up to Life of the Party in Thief 2 Expert, a classic level with a little bit of almost everything. It's not my favorite Thief 2 level, but the game is so good that is a prize. I find the original title has a lot of very interesting levels, but many are labyrinthine - given the technology of the time I almost wonder how they managed to organize it all. Thief 2 has much more easily readable, with coherent levels that often have some supernatural side quests to keep the pacing fluid, but the top-down structure is often heavy-handed. There's still plenty of secrets and unexpected routes even in the highly structured Thief 2 levels, though, but these nuances probably are lost on most gamers due to the difficulty of tracking differences in levels this sprawling. In terms of other gameplay changes, I notice Garrett has a real body now (so you can die from having your foot crushed by a platform) and you can knock out many enemies by running around them and hitting the right spot on the back of their head (at least I think that's new). The Thief Gold exclusive levels probably represent something like a middle ground between the two in terms of sophistication, plus they introduce the Downwinders gang (for whatever that bit of lore is worth). Many people complain about the Thieves Guild level especially, but that seems mainly due to the confusing hiding spots for some objectives - thank goodness for walkthroughs. The Mage Towers and Song of the Caverns are very nice levels, though not perfect.
I'm a bit surprised by how gracefully these have aged, mantling over everything and nearly invisible loot aside. Even though the core mechanic of "hold shift and tap walk really slow" is still annoying I find it manageable now, plus the refinements about how to land softly even on loud surfaces helps. A few places are very tricky puzzles due to this - try clearing out the foyer of Sheriff Truart's place with just a single moss arrow and the blackjack. Thief 2's control presets are slightly different, which I don't like as knowing when to make a break for cover or to rush an enemy is key, but thankfully Thief 2 can be configured more or less like the original so you can still bind your forward key to run. I am much happier now that I have disabled "auto equip" which always was a horrible idea (I didn't pickpocket that arrow because I wanted to shoot the guard in the back). It's also striking how much System Shock 2 takes directly from these games, including animations - I knew that already, but seeing how the Ape Beasts run or how Hammers fight brings it home again. I also realized Dark Messiah of Might & Magic has another Thief reference besides the thief's armor (embroidered "G"), in that at least one area uses the same ambient noise as the cathedral interior from Eavesdropping.
The latest TFix patches help these games out a good amount, especially in the menus. Still getting occasional screen blackouts on loading in Thief 2, but at least none of the movies have failed to play. For the second Thief fix, I did select one non-bug user enhancement: Some kind soul has gone through the levels and fixed up some textures and details to better realize the intention. Beyond that everything's on defaults.
You remind me that I've got the latest versions of the Aleph One ports of Marathon games. There was some recent discussion about moving over to SDL2 for greater mouse precision, though I don't remember that being a big problem.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Ed -- good call on the Thief games! The first two are a couple of my all-time favorites (I like 1 more than 2 by a fair margin), although my preferred mode of playing is Hard difficulty, save only on objective completion (which one of the devs claimed was the "recommended" way of treating saves on an ancient post on the TTLG forums) aside from Bonehoard and THC, which I play on Expert. Finding a way out when things go pear-shaped is one of the most exciting things in the game, and not being able to kill stuff in most levels on Expert really puts a kink in that. Plus, RttC's infamous Expert only objective is just too annoying.
"No mid-level saves" is an occasionally fun challenge, although it's really daunting in some of the larger levels. I've never had the discipline to keep that up through an entire run; the furthest I've ever made it before cracking was RttC.
Ditch the walkthroughs, though, IMO. It's OK to miss stuff, since you're sure to go back at some point!
Anyways, I've been playing Resident Evil HD. Killed the plant boss last night, but didn't have any ink ribbons left, and died to a big lizard thing in the mansion. Thinking about going back to my save before that, so I can have a ribbon after finishing the Residence. No matter where I drop that last save, though, I feel like there's a spot where I'd really want just one more when I sit and think about it for a bit!

Funnily enough, I paused my Thief 2 playthrough with Life of the Party too. Incredible level as well, though I had the bug which turned the sky into an early-morning grey fog instead of a night sky, but I liked the atmosphere either way.
Also, if you're giving Marathon another whirl, be sure to check out Marathon Phoenix on Total Carnage difficulty. It's about as close to a first-person SHMUP as you will get, with top-tier level design to boot.

Snap snap, puppy!
I never thought about Thief user missions until I found this last night. There is probably a lot more Thiefing there than I've got stomach for, at least all at once, but I'm making a note. I've already downloaded one mod - the HD version of Thief 2X (Shadows of the Metal Age). I'll try that out later, maybe put Deadly Shadows aside for a bit to try this out first.
Sometime I'll have to check out the newest version of The Dark Mod again. I'll admit that not having campaigns built-in usually throws me off a game.
@ Obscura: That reminds me that the Bonehoard is more fun than I give it credit for, as I was dodging around a bunch of zombies. With all the avenues and leaps it's quite possible to do. As for the level on the whole, it's got a great entrance and buildup, one of the gem objectives has a really great mini-dungeon associated with it, and the music cue to the final objective is awesome too. Years ago I think I cheesed some zombies to death (I think) with a wall shooter but that's really not worth it, so I didn't bother with that.
The one best bit of praise I can think of for the Thief games is that they are some of the only titles where very obscure secrets are still fun to hunt for. It's totally different from running around banging on every wall in a random FPS, as in Thief you've got loot to look for, perhaps some dangerous enemies still about, and of course the great architecture to contend with as well. On the other hand, it strikes me that the Necromancer's Tower in Life of the Party is almost a missed opportunity (the "main attraction" there isn't really that great, and the secrets aren't really that well done in my opinion).
@ Durandal: Hey, that reminds me, I've seen this page before. I didn't go much farther than looking at Tempus Irae - I still have to finish every game in the original trilogy sometime.
Life of the Party's sky is weird...it's nighttime, but there's also a gray fog. If you look up and see the night sky and stars it should be fine. I uploaded a video to YouTube years back which shows the archer fight and it looks the same - that was entirely different hardware.

I've been playing a lot of Windjammers recently. It's a fun game on its own, but really picks up once you get a friend involved. I have a local buddy who is into Neo Geo as well, so have started doing regular matches.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Furi [PS4/PC] Been playing this a lot since it came out. Shmup+hack and slash hybrid that's entirely a boss rush. Looks vaguely similar to senko no ronde and has a parry system, teleport dashes and all that good stuff.
One of my favorite games already. It's like a love letter to shmups, platinum games and demanding action games in general. Even with a western team they clearly knew what they were doing with full on shmup bullet patterns on some of the final bosses. Hard difficulty is way more challenging than normal and should give a run for your money for veterans of these types of games. It might look wonky visually at points but always plays solid. All in all way beyond my expectations, I was sort of expecting a euroshmup version of Senko no Ronde with Metal Gear Rising parry system
About as much shmup influence as Sin & Punishment 2 which also goes entirely into shmup territory sometimes.
This is a pretty popular game so you can find good footage all around. Definitely want to do full runs of speedrun mode at some point but am unable to keep the game at 100% speed on some bosses at the moment. a 1CC run is less than 1 hour which is reasonable. The game even vocally says at points that it's made for the type of player who goes for challenge runs and wants to master the combat system.

Dead Space 1 - just did chapters 2,3,4 today and at start of chapter 5, but enough for today. So far I don't like it better then the classic RE series (pre-RE4 days).
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
That's one thing that sets the original Thief apart from System Shock 2 - it's not afraid to be a little crazy now and then. The bonus mission and the hidden basketball court are good, but the crazy architecture of The Sword really is something else.Blinge wrote:I never got around to thief 2 but I discovered that miniature village/giant house secret in Thief Gold and it blew my mind..

You know that section in The Sword where you are walking on an empty concrete walkway in a dark void with the night sky? In Escape!, there is a door which leads to that same void, and if you look up you can see that walkway from beneath.

I tried this game out on ps4 and I thought it seemed cool but a couple of things annoyed me about it. The fights seemed to be too "Simon says" for my liking, and in the bits where you're going between the boss fights you walk insanely slowly. Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Yeah, the player not having very much control over the flow of bosses is a thing. Then again I guess thats how most shmups work. If you found the first three bosses tedious: the game really picks up later on & doesn't expect you to use some abilities near the beginning. 3,2,6 are my least favorite bosses honestly. Took me a couple playthrough to start really understanding some of the combat abilities. Stuff like using a half-charged sword as a punish or combo ender, baiting out a melee string with a dodge then releasing charged sword and the fact that you don't need to parry or dodge entire strings to punish them. Also didnt know about the boost mechanic for first playthrough since I didnt look at the how to play menu.Immryr wrote:I tried this game out on ps4 and I thought it seemed cool but a couple of things annoyed me about it. Some of the more gimmicky bosses like the 2nd one can be fun once you figure out how to deal with them quickly, but I think that boss in particular is bad for early game since it can take forever if you don't. I think the lack of depth in combat and simon-says design will limit longevity of the game but who knows, it's only been out for a couple days.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I spent last week watching a couple Earthbound speedruns and decided to give it a shot. It doesn't seem that complicated while watching, but once I've started playing I was flabbergasted that people are finishing this game by the time I finish Threed. I love this game dearly and it's a great opportunity to play it again and again, so I think I'll do a couple more runs (my first is on pace for being about 10 hours - probably faster than a casual run?) and see how much I can improve.
RPG speedrunning. I'm one of those.

Maybe not literally, but...they do wear the same kind of uniform as the uniformed apebeasts!Durandal wrote:Those guards are actually disguised apebeasts.Ed Oscuro wrote:That's one thing that sets the original Thief apart from System Shock 2 - it's not afraid to be a little crazy now and then. I had fun climbing all over everything with rope arrows. Even funnier, there's guards in the big house!
More literal replacements are the SS2 mutants and security bots, which I think are both simply new models for apebeasts and Combat Bots from the Thief games.
Darn, I missed that this time. I did find the area but didn't look up, I don't think. You know that section in The Sword where you are walking on an empty concrete walkway in a dark void with the night sky? In Escape!, there is a door which leads to that same void, and if you look up you can see that walkway from beneath.
There's a similar starry section in Strange Bedfellows, in one of the elemental shrines. I noticed that with all of these areas there's some funky views to be had from inside the starry sections, especially where you can jump around and get past what are probably polygons drawn with a "skybox" texture. For example, in The Sword, if you jump up at the lower end of that section you can see from slightly above the map.
Of course, then there's the famous bug in Lord Bafford's Manor, but that's simply a gap in the level. It's weird to look out at all that empty space INSIDE the manor. Still, I'm happier that the Thief devs cared more about making interesting spaces than worrying about whether they were creating realistic structures.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Not really. Most bosses can be taken down with various attack items - super bombs and especially bottle rockets are huge - and you can either try to use status ailments to escape normal battles or just let Paula and Ness go all out as you shouldn't need to reserve PP. You don't even need to fill most of your equipment slots. It gets hairy if you find yourself in a fight and lose Paula (who'll get you through most nonboss fights) or Jeff die, or if you die and get respawned away from a convenient hospital - I chained something like five deaths after dying in Dungeon Man and getting dumped in the middle of a UFO infested desert. So there's a lot of improvement to be made just by not dying so much - but further refinements like inventory management and teleport movement will take a lot more familiarity with the game.Sounds cool man, don't you run into problems from being underleveled?

Damn, I didn't know that could happen.CStarFlare wrote: getting dumped in the middle of a UFO infested desert.
As for me; Stardew Valley. A lovely new way for me to waste time..
I'd always liked the concept of Harvest Moon, so it's nice to have a steam option.

I don't get what's so addicting about it; I played it for about 1 in-game week and wasn't hooked.Blinge wrote:As for me; Stardew Valley. A lovely new way for me to waste time..

Same with Candy Crush Saga; played that until I needed friends or to spend money to unlock more levels and wasn't ever addicted and just uninstalled it at that point. Whenever I ran out of lives, I just shut off the app and did something else. Didn't spend a single cent on that game.

Hey, the first enemy robot looks like Duke Togo. That game looks like nothing I've seen, that's new. EDF devs too!

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Playing stuff i got in the Summer Sale at the moment.
Doing a fiesta run on the Steam release of FFV, and it's my first playthrough of the Steam release of the game. Bard, Dancer, Chemist, Geomancer. Since Geomancer was my earth roll(yes, I rolled early which I usually don't do), I still chose to not use it until I got to Earth Crystal even though Geomancer probably would have helped a lot on Adamantoise and Archeoaevis, while Sandworm and Soul Cannon would have been just as horrible if I had actually used it.
4 Bard start was absolutely horrible, but I'm technically past it now. I'm still in it because I haven't picked up the Earth jobs since I want to farm some more Elixirs before continuing the story, but the hard part is over, and since I'm level 30 now due to Bard being so bad early game, the rest of the game should be easy.
Also Starchaser seems a bit interesting so far. I'm pretty terrible at factoring in the changing directions of everything in planning where I need to go(I'm horrible at almost anything puzzles though). Can get quite confusing on these mazes though. Only finished the first and second. First with S rank (14:59 time, S rank requirement 15:00) and second with A rank(got lost a lot and took some time penalties for losing all my health a few times). Didn't find the hidden items in either of them, so would have to come back later to get them, and hopefully S rank the second as well.
Controls could definitely be a lot better since I had some issues with mapping and camera doesn't seem to work too well.

Try Harvest Moon for the SNES. It's much more straightforward - Stardew and the later HM games add a bunch of stuff and can maybe be a bit overwhelming, but maybe starting at the beginning will give you a glimpse of what's the pull. I've been playing HM (and now Stardew) since like 1996 or whenever it got its first US release. Incredibly addictive shit.atheistgod1999 wrote:I don't get what's so addicting about it; I played it for about 1 in-game week and wasn't hooked.Blinge wrote:As for me; Stardew Valley.
