Insector X

Post by Mero »

This is the high score thread for Insector X, a 1989 arcade horizontal shooter made by Hot-B (published by Taito). The game was ported to the Megadrive and Famicom/NES, with the Megadrive game being very different from the source material.

No continues, all defaults. State which version you're playing.

Recent one from a local competition.

PS2 version (Taito Memories 1 Vol. 2/Gekan)
Kollision - 825,500 - ALL

Image

... aaaaand an old one for the MD version:

Kollision - 1,797,800 - ALL

Image

This is a very clear case of a port that's definitely better than the original arcade game.

This port is not nearly as terrible as people make it out to be. It's not an outstanding game by any stretch of the imagination but it is definitely serviceable. It plays kinda like a prototype to Darius Twin to be honest.

Edit: Looks like the other host I used is out of business, added a working picture.

Always a little sad to get more points by playing worse.

I'm not entirely certain, but it's probably the third area in the final level (where you start out in a narrow tunnel and then arrive in front of a lava/magma field). Those barriers in the beginning are worth a 1,000 points each and afterwards a lot of enemies spawn, some of which even drop points. It's somewhat dangerous, though, since the big grasshopper-alike bugs cover a lot of space with their spread shots, thus making it somewhat difficult to maneuver around. I did not test different checkpoints all that extensively, however, there may be more lucrative spots.

Video

Played the Japanese version in case it matters.

After the quick success in Heavy Unit I thought I might revisit another old acquaintance. Less than two hours later I got a 1LC with what I believe is the ideal score for that (should be 623,800 points) and this score which is only 12,100 points below the absolute maximum that can be achieved in this game. If you want the easiest WR in a shmup, here it is. You only have to be willing to invest a little more time on the checkpoint milking, I let a few enemies live to ensure that I could kill myself in time (that is, before the next checkpoint starts), that can be optimized.

The arcade version also made me appreciate the MD port much more, it's head and shoulders above the original game!

Arcade (played via wolfmame .224)

HAN - 615,100 - ALL

Not really a scoring run, as I didn't checkpoint milk at all. Played with auto OFF, completed no deaths/no miss.

HAN - 1,547,000 - ALL

Played on hardware w/an everdrive cart, also completed no miss - so no checkpoint or level 4 boss milking.

A mixture of lack of knowledge, lag, fatigue, stress and lack of time to play makes this game really challenging for me.

Third_strike - 839,300 - ALL - P1 - Auto On

Edit:
Very good shmup!
Third_strike - 851,900 - ALL - P1 - Auto On

Edit:
This game is masterpiece I just could not resist. Now I am okay!

Third_strike - 855,900 - ALL - P1 - Auto On - ShmupMame 4.2

Congrats on your score! :D

For some reason though I can't see the screenshot you posted, it just has this sign displayed instead:

Do you know why that could be the case?
