Crazy Platypus Glitch

I'm not sure if this game is known very well on this forum, but I found an interesting glitch in Platypus that you can see in this video: https://youtu.be/HFioDO2PsEU?t=20m47s

I'm guessing that the sprite of the purple jet is changed out for a new sprite which causes the glitch, but I'm still uncertain how it happens. It also causes the evaluation score to get messed up and go over 100 percent. Has anyone seen this glitch before?

I don't play it, but the title and premise caught my attention when it was new on PC (way before PSP was a thing, if memory serves). Ever since it's been one of those games mentioned in the least expected times and places (not quite unlike Star Wars Episode I: Racer).
