Wow, thanks so much for all the feedback!BulletMagnet wrote:Okay, a few more thoughts, though I haven't gotten too far yet:
- I like the presentation on all fronts; it's simple but has a tangible, restrained sense of style, and manages to stand out from the scads of releases that aim for a "retro" aesthetic but don't go much beyond that. Also runs nicely on my laptop and senses my 360 third-party controller with no issues. Bullet visibility hasn't been a problem thus far.
- The platforming aspect is definitely the star here, as shooting is mostly something you also happen to do while you're bouncing around; that's not really a fault, though, as it introduces a natural-feeling multitasking element that doesn't get in the way, since you're mostly invincible while bouncing. Putting together a long stretch of airtime and managing to sneak in a bank at the last minute is great once you get the hang of it.
- My main hang-up is getting used to this particular style of platforming; the blue "bounce-able" enemies aren't really threats, as you can pass right through them, which is good and bad, since you can slip right up onto one from below if you judge your jump height right, but it can also be a bit tricky to tell when you're high/centered enough, as you'll slip right back down through them if you misjudge.
- Wall jumping is critical to stretching out your bounces, though you can only do one at a time, so you need to have some idea of where you're landing in advance; essentially, to score well you'll need to do a bit of memorization as to where the blue things show up, so you can chart a path along them (and, ideally, have a route to the ceiling by the end). Nothing new to shmuppers, of course, but attempting to "freestyle" too much is likely to negatively affect your score...
- ...or, in some cases, get you killed, since missing a bounce at the wrong moment can land you in a spot where death is more or less inevitable (and this is on the easiest mode). To finish a wave all you have to do is survive long enough (and score as much as you can in the meantime), but when you're rolling and hopping along the floor it doesn't take long to be overwhelmed if no blue guys are nearby.
Overall a really neat hybrid, albeit one that takes some getting used to; still a work in progress on my end, certainly. Will be attempting to improve from here, I hope the game does well for you.
