Hopefully there is an alternative method available like pins/holes to connect an Altera USB blaster or something.darcagn wrote:It's distributed as a .nes file so I'm assuming it's updated by loading an NES ROM through an EverDrive or PowerPak.

Re: Hi-Def NES - a 1080p HDMI mod kit!
Kevtris posted an update to the hi-def's firmware, only 30-40 consoles are out there right now so this mostly just applies to them:
Weeeelllll, here it is. I received the everdrive yesterday and loaded V12? firmware onto it (the version before the "fix" for the HDMI adapter). Thinking this was going to be a "worst case" test. It worked perfectly with the games I tested- I tested about 6 or 7 different mappers and all is well. Reset even worked properly. Before, the error messages wouldn't show up properly but they do now (i.e. no SD card).
FDS is working properly now, and so do MMC5 games (i.e. reset works there too, and no need to use a game genie). I sent it out to a couple people and they could apply it properly, though one person has problems.
He was using a powerpak, and his MMC3 file was different than mine- I think he has the savestate mappers. This caused the update to not work. It reported a data corrupt error and refused to flash the firmware. I gave him my mapper 4 file direct off the CF card on my powerpak and then he got it to work properly.
I don't know anything about the save state mapper, but I assume it cannot load 512K PRG ROMs, because it uses some of the RAM for the savestate part? I could be totally wrong but that's just my first guess.
It works on some everdrives, but some people had issues.
Anyways, here is the update:
http://blog.kevtris.org/blogfiles/HiDef ... 0V2.00.nes
To use it, load this ROM on a flash cart (or burn EPROMs? hehe), run it and then get into the Hi Def menu, select "save and update", then "update firmware", and follow the on screen prompts. It will check the update for integrity, and then flash it if it passes the check. Cycle power and it will use the new firmware.

Might not be news, but it certainly is to me!

Kit will likely cost $120 and installation under $100.

Any dates when this will be available to order (uninstalled modkit)?
Got some cash in my pocket that wants to change owner

I'm guessing Jason won't sell DIY kits until he finishes selling off his stock pile of NES systems. If you've ever seen his videos, he has tons of NES consoles, so it might be a while. There might be a new video published soon as well.

Re: Hi-Def NES - a 1080p HDMI mod kit!
My stock has nothing to do with it. In fact i'm only selling front loaders and buying more all the time to finish out the kits we have now as they only fit flush in that console.
Kev is redesigning the pcbs to fit the top loader and av fami better.
Once that's done we'll order kits, but it takes the fab/assmebler 4-6 weeks to deliver, plus maybe another week to program and test etc.
So it will be first of next year at the latest i'm guessing...

So it is about stock. Just not the stock of NESs but the kits you have.game-tech.us wrote:My stock has nothing to do with it. In fact i'm only selling front loaders and buying more all the time to finish out the kits we have now as they only fit flush in that console.

Hats off to Kevtris for doing a totally amazing job here. Incredible.
Including a feature to scale outside of the tv image, like the narrator said, does seem like a good idea. Should be doable. But as it is, the features go well beyond anything on the market. And even possible to fiddle with the music channels, awesome. When the prices go down a bit, I expect alot of people to jump on it. Me included. I've never owned a NES. I'd actually prefer a hdmi modded Famicom.

Re: Hi-Def NES - a 1080p HDMI mod kit!
5x integer scaling at 1080p (going off the screen, as you say) is not possible with the hardware in the current hi-def NES kit. Not enough memory to enlarge the scanline buffer that much. So says Kevtris himself.
Re: Hi-Def NES - a 1080p HDMI mod kit!
You guys (Kevtris/Gametech) have been talking about that you don't want horders to buy 50 kits and sit on them or sell them for stupid money, that's awesome, but... i have 1 frontloader, 1 toploader and 1 original Famicom that i reaaaaally want to update with this piece of technical madness.
Would it be possible to buy 3 you think?
Pwetty pwease?

The first batch will be sold one per person to keep it more fair and to get kits to more ppl.
Second batch will prolly be as many as you want and Kev seems to think we'll be able to replenish in 2-3 weeks of ordering more.

Re: Hi-Def NES - a 1080p HDMI mod kit!
Is there an ETA on when these will be available? (I just want to have the funds in place and ready, and possibly get an AV Famicom to have it done to in time)
I've been excitedly following this since it was announced and can not wait! What you guys have done is pretty freaking amazing. I'm happy to hear that it sounds like the resupplies should go quick. It seems other things like this, like the UltraHDMI are luck of the draw if you find a modder with it in stock.

Kevtris posted an update video last night:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcB0olRfYM0
Biggest news is the next batch of kits has been ordered!
There is also a small firmware update, v2.25.
http://blog.kevtris.org/blogfiles/HiDef ... 0final.nes
This fixes a few games and interpolation.

Re: Hi-Def NES - a 1080p HDMI mod kit!
Thanks for the update. Glad to hear Blaster "Bastard" is finally fixed. The title screen, intro, pause, and boss screens look pretty bad with the existing v2.00 firmware.
Do my eyes deceive me, or is that a purple colored Analogue Nt?
Also, it's United Chemi-Con (capacitor manufacture you guys were trying to guess) - http://www.chemi-con.com/
Some before and after shots of Blaster Master (one of my favorites coincidentally).

Pause Screen

I find it humorous how there were claims that there were only glitches on the title screen and intro, and not the pause screen, or all of the boss battles. Meh!
Interpolation looks interesting, especially if you want to soften the ultra sharp image! Might be useful in conjunction with scanlines.

Good job Kevtris! Just need a V2 HW rev with 5x integer scaling.

He did a separate video on the purple NT. It's exclusive (as in, nobody else has one), probably because of his involvement with the product. So it's even more rare than those insanely overpriced gold-plated units

Yeah, I found the video. Looks like Kevtris published it a couple of hours before the HDN update video. Jason could use some practice playing SMB2!

I'm pretty psyched about this. But I'll let everyone else try it, for a while, before I buy one.
However, it will be sold out, in no time flat. I agree.

He said that he upgraded to the biggest plan GoDaddy offered, but it still wasn't enough. To be honest, I'm surprised at how little resources GoDaddy's biggest hosting plan has, with no ability to scale beyond it.

So what's the plan Jason? Are you just going to cancel sale until you come up with a more robust website or should we keep trying?
