I just watched Gone Girl, and while I wouldn't call it "dark" in the way that term is normally used, it's definitely twisted.

Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
Watch American Mary...it's got an interesting intro/premise unto itself indeed (even the Soska sisters have a cameo appearance in it as well).
Dead Hooker in the Trunk is another one worth watching (the Soska sisters directed this one also).
Another Heaven is one of those off-the-wall Japanese flicks that requires a viewing with a unexpected conclusion that you won't see coming (delving into into both sci-fi & horror genres easily with a serious undertone).
Summer of Blood (circa 2014) dabbles in both the comedy & horror genres with ease (I was laughing my head off with this one & it's one of those hidden gems not to be missed). The eventual conclusion leaves you wanting more or perhaps another sequel just to see what happens next. Quite a riot/hoot if you were to ask me.
Afflicted (circa 2013) deals with some heavy psychological issues within the newly-found documentary footage type of horror genre film.

Oldboy. The 2003 korean film though, not the 2013 American remake trash.

Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
I haven't seen the majority of movies namedropped so far (and I found the 2003 Oldboy just silly at best), so I can't be sure what is really sought after, but two titles nearing my (not literal) understanding of "dark" are: the 1996 French film Bernie and the 2008 South Korean Breathless (똥파리).
As for literally dark - the low-key lit scenes of Killing Zoe are top-notch.

Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
Leaving plot sensitive info in spoiler tags.
Oldboy has great cinematography, some good acting, amazing choreography (the hallway fight scene with the hammer is breathtaking), an interesting story, and an engaging mystery even if the payoff may not really live up to the foreshadowing. Sure it's not 2001: A space odyssey, but I still recommend it.
This may be a complete given, but Eraserhead by David Lynch (or really just about all of his filmography) is quite the descent into anxiety and uncertainty.
If what you're trying to say is that it isn't the most dark psychological film out there, I can concede somewhat. If you're saying the substance of the entire film was 'just silly at best' I really think you kind of missed the forest for the trees.Obiwanshinobi wrote:I found the 2003 Oldboy just silly at best
Spoiler
Sure the incest reveal of the villain and the main character is a little far-fetched and in a movie centered around mystery it might not feel like the payoff quite lives up to the tension created from being in the dark, and the hypnotism is sort of odd, but this is about all I can see eye to eye with you on. This is still only a minority of the film.

I watched Oldboy when it was basking in glamour surrounding certain cinematographies of Asia at the time (Bollywood, Korean etc.) - and couldn't help but feel disappointed. Recently, the 1967 Point Blank made me feel this way and come to think of it, Oldboy fans might like that one too.

Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
That makes sense. I watched it for the first time a a year or so before I heard the American remake was coming out, long after it had fell back into semi-obscurity. I went in just expecting a alright drama with cool fight choreography and was pleasantly surprised. It also helps that i'm not well versed in Korean films or culture really. K-Pop has inadvertently caused me to avoid Korean culture like the plague, Oldboy was the point where I realized there was more than second-rate refrains and pop idols coming out of Korea.Obiwanshinobi wrote:I watched Oldboy when it was basking in glamour surrounding certain cinematographies of Asia at the time (Bollywood, Korean etc.) - and couldn't help but feel disappointed. I've never seen those movies, but if you want dark and psychological, ExistenZe is one.

I haven't seen it, but I would give it a shot just because his remake of The Fly is very enjoyable. I haven't seen anything else by him, but apparently he has a pretty interesting repertoire (I've heard people praise Videodrome quite a lot).Immryr wrote:existenz sucks. one of the worst david cronenberg films.

Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
I'll have to check it out, it's been on my watch list for a while now. I've been meaning to get more into Chronenberg, by chance do you or anyone else here have any opinions on his other films such as Scanners, Dead Ringers, or Naked Lunch? The closest thing to an opinion on him I have (besides really enjoying The Fly) is that he has an interesting taste in really abstract literature like Naked Lunch by William S Burroughs.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Videodrome holds up indeed.
While this won't really fit the bill for what OP was looking for, and the chances are most people here will be more repelled than excited by this, maybe consider looking into Burroughs' "Nova Express" Trilogy of books if you're feeling really courageous. particularly the first one "The Soft Machine". It's the definition of surreal and expanded my horizons on what I thought literature could even be. The plot is barely there and only a few inches away from being unintelligible garbage, but I found it fascinating. His method was writing short stories that only had a vague sense of thematic connection at best and then proceeding to literally cut up the stories to pieces and paste them back together to give them this dream-like psychosis of characters, settings, and tones constantly appearing, morphing, and melting in a rapid haphazard fashion. Stay far far away if you're not into art being so experimental it would make Jodorowsky and Lynch feel alienated.
Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
videodrome is absolutely amazing. the brood, scanners, naked lunch, rabid and shivers are all great too. I'm not too keen on his more recent films though.
Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
Henry: Portrait of a serial killer
Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
I'll chuck in Edmond. More of a black comedy but delivers on appalling aftermaths. It's like American Psycho starring rumpled, bumbling ol' Bill H. Macy!
I watched Shivers (edit: not Rabid - haven't seen that) recently. Looks very dated at first glance, but Jesus fuck it gets nasty. Upsetting zombie sex rampage. Videodrome seconded, another of his grand body horror successes along with The Fly.
Dead Ringers is great, though closer to pure psychodrama than The Fly's overt horror. Brutally twisted with a blackly humorous streak. Jeremy Irons records a fantastic double play as P1 "Shy w/ Girlz rofl v_v" and P2 "PROFESSOR BOOTY" !
I find Scanners a bit weak, tbh. Story felt perfunctory and the male lead is distractingly poor. Still worth a look, being bookended by a pair of legendary body horror sequences and some neat tidbits between. Michael Ironside's menacing Revok saves it.Square_Air wrote:I've been meaning to get more into Chronenberg, by chance do you or anyone else here have any opinions on his other films such as Scanners, Dead Ringers, or Naked Lunch?

Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
Naked Lunch is good, but it's not so much an adaptation of Naked Lunch as it is an amalgam of various threads from Burroughs' books and his life. Cronenberg takes characters and concepts from Naked Lunch (the Mugwumps, Dr Benway, Interzone, Annexia, etc) and weaves them together with details of Burroughs life and creates a story about the creation of Naked Lunch. Given that you've obviously read quite a bit of Burroughs, you'll get more out of it than the average viewer. Personally, I like it more as a bizarro Burroughs biography than a movie, but it's definitely worth a watch.Square_Air wrote: I'll have to check it out, it's been on my watch list for a while now. Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
The Videodrome movie trailer was groundbreaking for it's time -- featuring CG animation that was state-of-the-art back in 1983. Haven't seen a cool & slick movie trailer like that since then.
The ending sequence of Videodrome was originally supposed to feature a TV set that arises from a bath tub but it turned out that it'd cost too much to pull off successfully as a practical special EFX scene so it was axed. The eventual ending that you do see in Videodrome was the next best ideal solution/answer that $$$ could buy and still look cool/relevant even to this very day.
I'd suggest picking up the 2-disc DVD set of The Criterion Collection version of Videodrome (circa 2004) as it's the definitive version worth owning/viewing easily as it was originally intended (the actual DVD slipcase has a slight nod to those ye olde Scotch branded VHS tapes visual appeal from the late 1980s & into the early 1990s). Have to give proper kudos/props to Rick Baker for his masterful practical special EFX shown in Videodrome.

Re: i need similar to these dark Psychological Movies..
there were some decent 2015 flicks that might not be exactly what you're looking for, but I really enjoyed them and they're primarily dark psychological flicks
Entertainment 2015 was really good. basically follows around a comedian that sucks as he's also trying to find his daughter. stars gregg turkington, john c reilly, tye sheridan, michael cera, tim heidecker.
the lobster 2015 - by yorgos lanthimos who also did dogtooth. starring collin farrell, rachel weisz, john c reilly about a dystopian society where single people have to go to a hotel and mingle with other single people. you have a set amount of time to find a significant other before you turn into an animal of your choosing. there are also ways to extend your stay and remain human. it's much more dark than the trailer leads you to believe.
the mend 2014/2015 - john magary debut about two brothers that have a dysfunctional relationship that you basically learn through the conversations that take place throughout the film. at first it seems a bit aimless but partway through it starts to pull itself together.
and of course anomalisa was my favorite of 2015, but that's stop motion animation and definitely not what you're looking for. there was buzzard as well but it's basically about a scammer fed up with the corporate environment he's a part of. more of a "punk" version of office space.
"The Game" 1997 might fit your description. It was one of my favorites growing up.
