Ageing optical drives have an easier time reading better-quality CD-Rs. Good not only for the sake of piracy, but also playing fan-translated games, homebrew, romhacks* and the likes on your vintage consoles.
Little as I pirate nowadays, my weary PS2 Slim likes my recently bought (in a fairly good shape by the way) Tokyo Road Race and Gradius V better burnt onto DVDs (keeps it quieter, too); then there's that Net Yaroze title Hover Racing (was it ever on any printed disc?) - to name a few times of late when quality DVD/CD-Rs came in handy.

*) Some hacks commonly sold in countries where more folks had a modded PSX than single kosher disk to play on it are legendary, such as Soul Reaver PL (it is in Polish, but written & voiced certainly NOT by native speakers - even more extreme than SotN or Castle Shikigami 2 US in that respect).

"Captain Claw Predatory Edition" says on the box, boasting 20 additional stages. I wonder if extra content was created by Monolith (doubt it), or even such a release - approved by the makers.

Damn, that game looks awesome! I should get it!

Jesus... what brought that on? When did I ever say someone's "taste was rubbish"? :|

(Tarma's a self-confessed rarity collector, I'm pretty sure he's not fussed about how good a game it is, or isn't).

I own a copy of Iron Commando on SFC - it's crap. It seems playable until you get to around the end of stage two, where the sloppy, poorly constructed code really begins to set in. Have you ever watched this game being 1cc'd? It's been done (amazingly) and it's the most stringent workaround ever to combat the game's broken elements. I only ever saw one 1cc on YT and I'm pretty sure it wasn't TAS, but that's it. And the run is still far from flawless (getting constantly knocked about is basically unavoidable).
ALSO you picked the intentionally most shit screenshot
I don't even know what you're talking about here.

Now would you care to explain what makes Iron Commando such a good game in your opinion?

Ha ha! :) It's balls dude, you'll play it a few times wondering why it seems to start off as a half decent Capcom Cadillacs & Dinosaurs meets The Punisher rip, and then frustration will really start to set in. Trust me, it's not you, it's a coding problem. The enemy AI is downright offensive and the damage levels are all over the place.

I know you're a collector of the big guns so I know it won't bother you much (like I said, I got a copy too) but I have no idea why anyone would rate it as a genuinely good game.

I also don't know why Kaiser went off like that either, but whatever. Rushing Beat probably thinks it's good because he likes Rushing Beat.

Didn't get any for Valentines? :?:

I'll pay out if I have to, granted, but I do play what I buy and if I don't like it I will get rid of it rather than let it gather dust or use it for dick swinging contests.

I only played it for an hour or so the other day and I am wondering why I bothered getting it... lol :o

Now we've got that covered you'll have to tell me what you paid for it. And then I'll tell you what I paid for mine. :P

An hour is usually long enough to figure that one out. Alas, I was swayed by opinion several times to go back to it, and it doesn't get any better.
I don't like Rushing Beat.
Controversial as this may be, I actually think the first Rushing Beat is the best one. It's got terribly ropey collision detection in it that you need to workaround, but beneath it's roughness is a fairly enjoyable belt scroller with a few neat tactics. It's also got beautiful backgrounds and doesn't overstay its welcome.

Rushing Beat 2 & 3 are bad though, getting progressively worse. Technically cleaner but also more sterile and lacking and meaningful system depth. They're so drawn out and so boring its like watching pixels dry.

I watched several videos on youtube and it didn't look that bad... and I read some realtively positive reviews, so I thought I'd take the plunge seeing as scrolling beat 'em ups are one of my fave genres. Knew it wouldn't be SoR 2 or FF good, but its not even Crest of Wolf good.

They did more than publish it. It's completely different from the US version. Rather than a straight port of the arcade, it's a different take on Rampart with enemies on all sides and varied level themes.

I didn't realize that Riot Zone had a different name in Japan. I just assumed it was same since the arcade game it's based on is called Riot City with the same title for Japan. I never actively looked for the game, though.

Rushing Beat 2 at least is fun in the kusoge way. Every attack hits OTG so you can get some hilarious combos and shit going.

Nice scoop on Iron Commando. Love the art style in that one, and it is a pretty fun trek with a second player. I always enjoy it whenever I try it, never been able to beat it though.

I like the NES one too. It doesn't have anything unique to it like the FC port, but it's from former Atari Games/Tengen staff and closer to the arcade. As far as I know, the NES version lacks the extras of the SNES port from the same developers, though. The FC version is very much Konami and definitely has their feel, especially with the music (though it still has the familiar building tune).
