フォース) - 1993 A.I./ATLUS

Post by Xyga »

Credit to Imhotep for mentioning that game some days ago, posting this link: http://postback.geedorah.com/extra/wing_force.htm and informing us that a pcb (maybe the only existing?) has surfaced from the arcade underworld and just sold on YAJ, hopefully it'll end up emulated one of those days.

It looks like your typical early 90's toaplan/raiden clone. Could be boring, could also be a little gem.

Below a collection of the very little info I could gather about Wing Force ウイング.フォース;

From the geedorah link;
Little is known about this unreleased arcade game which was once announced and publicly tested by Atlus in Japan in 1993.
It is usually mentioned as a released piece in Japanese publications though there hasn't been evidence so far of it being ever marketed.
These publications also mention A. I. as the developer, which makes sense since they are the people behind Atlus' own Blazeon, released the year before.

Wonderful!

Done some fine research there, thanks for sharing the assets. It's always amazing to see something once lost and forgotten suddenly unearthed. Fingers crossed for a MAME dump.

Oh by the way before it disappears, this is the text left by the seller on YAJ;

If our japanophile friends have a little time to kill maybe there are some more bits of info in it (?)

EDIT: one more bit found at neogaf http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=190497740 (from Electronic Gaming Monthly #45 April 1993)

Looking forward to give this one a spin, even though 'done by the same guys who did BlazeOn' isn't all that awe-inspiring.

I love it when obscure arcade shmups surface like this; I'll even settle for Korean ones.

Definitely looks Toaplan-ish, Truxton in particular.

Anybody got any details what it plays like? Weapon systems? Gimmicks?

Blazeon is a pretty good game. Shame that too many people only know the crappy SNES version.

I wouldn't exactly call the arcade version 'good', apart from the intro sequence.

I put up a video of the attract demo on my blog. It's a Raiden like design with 5 stages and 2 loops to clear. Doesn't get very difficult until 1-5 or so. It's a very delicate PCB and wasn't fully working on arrival. I'll be carefully preserving the data over the holidays.

The level shown in attract mode reminds me of the first level on Viper Phase 1 ...

Wow that was fast !

Shou seemed to suggest the hardware is fragile, maybe he decided to take care of the matter without delay to be safe.

Is A.I. a division of Atlus? Do we know if they developed any other games?

Some of the sprite work is very good, at least from these screen-shots!

What an odd track record. PCE Kyuukyoku Tiger is solid, MD Super Airwolf is horrendous (I've never seen a worse attempt at multi-directional shooting), Tekkaman Blade is amazingly bad, Super Raiden is really good. No clear pattern whatsoever.

Maybe they were more a clearing house for independent / freelance developers? Seems to have been the case at some devs.

Good job Shou, thanks for picking this up.

From the screens I get the feeling it'll be much better than Sand Scorpion (aka Uncooked Lobster) so I'll enjoy it. Even if it's not quite as good as Raiden, it should be fun enough to play. The only screenshot I was questioning was the one which seems to show just two bosses, but that could be without the bullet patterns and they are still well drawn.

Live (onscreen) shot limit doesn't look too overbearing here either.

Uploaded a rip of the Wing Force soundtrack. Some of it might be a bit off, as I recorded from emu and I'm still not entirely sure about the OKI clock rate.

Sorry for OGG, was too lazy to get LAME for MP3 V0.
