How does PS2 component look compared to RGB in 480i?
I asked whether I should get an RGB cable instead of using component, and everyone told me that if I'm only using 480i, I should get an RGB cable. Nobody told me if the quality was better or anything. I know the RGB quality must be at least slightly better due it being impossible to do a perfect conversion, but I don't know how much better it will look. Can someone please tell me if RGB on PS2 looks way better than component in 480i? Thanks.

I personally don't notice a difference on my PVM. That's with both 480i PS2 games and 240p PS1 games.atheistgod1999 wrote:I asked whether I should get an RGB cable instead of using component, and everyone told me that if I'm only using 480i, I should get an RGB cable. Through my framemeister it looks the same to me.
I think someone once mentioned that certain shades of gray were slightly noisier or something..

Fudoh notes that component is a good compromise for price & quality, but the component cable is noisier in general than the RGB. The noise is less noticeable for 480i and much more noticeable in 480p.

The best quality seems to be RGB if you can find it, and if you're going to plug it into a converter/upscaler (like an XRGB), then RGB is best.

In some circumstances component output will have more color-banding.

Component seems to come out a fair bit darker than rgb at 480i on ps2. Try both with a brightness test like the one in ridge racer V. Rgb brightness looks correct, component needs brightening. There also appears to be noise in the dark shades of the component picture.
Component at 480p seems to come out at the correct brightness, the same as rgb at 480i.

I would stick to RGB - I think component applies some kind of color conversion, I have the original Sony component and a 3rd party RGB cable, RGB looks better

This post is from a guy that doesn't see much of an upgrade in the N64 RGB mod.
Personally for blocky pixel type games like the NES and SNES I would definitely do everything I can to get the clearest picture. I've tryed the PS2 on component/scart and didn't see enough of a difference that would make me want to swap cables for 240p games to 480 games.

I don't believe you need to swap cables unless your TV/display/scaler doesn't support 240p over component.

I have a component cable on my ps2 and ive got to say it looks very good. But im also using it on a 32" SD sony Wega Tv, which is about the best line of consumer SDTV you could buy.
now, you can get them for around $50 on Craigslist. some people give them away.
Only my PVM looks better for old consoles. Every game looks better the colors are way sharper. But the advantage of the WEGA is its size. the Pvm is 14".
Back to the ps2 - I just got an RGB cable for my PS1, but never tried it on the ps2 because it already looks good to me.
I will try it soon and if it looks better i will let you know.

This is only considering the XRGB though. It's component input processing is known to not be all that great.telemetry wrote:Fudoh notes that component is a good compromise for price & quality, but the component cable is noisier in general than the RGB. On a CRT that supports both, the difference will probably be nonexistent.
