toru hidaka

Post by MintyTheCat »

This chap really was a pioneer who worked in many aspects of game development.

He released many books that taught programming. I have several by him about Shmup development alone. He wrote books on Assembly too for the general developer. He also wrote a couple on Shmups and RPGs and one or two about utility development and sound tool dev.

This video is an interview that he did:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma6ZFpj8SLA

It doesn't state in the interview but he also ran a marathon every day.

Yes, these were the times when Programmers were the real thing :D

This book has a long interview with him if any of you fancy reading:

Cheers,

Minty.

This is pretty fascinating stuff.
Could you please point me to some of his books? I couldn't find anything so far.

I have these two:

I got them here:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/4756 ... UTF8&psc=1

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/4883 ... UTF8&psc=1

I wanted to get the X68000 version though but I could not find it. I can understand x86 but I prefer 68K :)

I focused on the STG related works that he wrote.
I shall have to see if anything is a possible candidate for translation.

I spoke with Blackoak a while ago about translating the PC Engine Develo book too:

http://www.interlog.com/~daves/develo.html

The better one to get is the 6502 version and not the BASIC version.

Just read his two-part interview in John Szczepaniak's book. I loved the part where he flexed his bicep for John :D

Super talented guy. Shame he gave up making games; although I'm sure his books ultimately led to more games than he could have ever made on his own.

Well he is fairly seniour now and practically retired :)

Yes, he is credited with getting many into programming through his books.

Kind of reminds me of the C64 and Spectrum scene back in the 80s and early 90s with all the books that were released.
