My New NEC-XM29. Guy Wanted $1800.

Post by aaronmjr »

After a very long search, I finally have an XM29. I'll try to make this short.

I have search crawlers in place, saved searches, wanted ads, check CL often, call community colleges, TV studios, medical resellers and all sorts of stuff trying to look out for great deals on RGB CRT's. I've had all sorts of false starts, trolls and time wasters in the pursuit of an XM29 and it was getting pretty old. Then, an XM29 popped up FOR FREE a few miles from me AND I MISSED IT by an hour or so. I was so deflated I decided to stop looking, it was a sign. A couple days later someone emailed me saying they had an XM29, and it was the guy who grabbed the free one. He was another time waster. First he would sell it for $100. Then he would sell it for like $350, then he wouldn't sell it at all because he was using it as a pass-through for his home security system... Mind you this was all in one conversation. After that, I stopped looking, stopped caring and was content with moving onto an XRGB-Mini and enjoying my PVM-20M4U when I felt the need for the real-deal. Fast forward like 6 months, and he has the XM29 listed on craigslist for $1800............ The guy is crazy. I notice he is open to a bunch of different trades, one of which I had and was literally about to recycle. A couple emails later and I drove to his house and traded straight-up for the XM29 without a dime spent! I cleaned it up a bit last night and hooked up my SNES via s-video. I cannot for the life of me get the remote to work though. If anyone has an XM-2950 (non plus/extra) and can tell me their dip switch settings, I would appreciate it. Hoping to test my Genesis or SMS on it via RGB tonight!

Congrats! Not sure what you ended up trading but if you were gonna recycle it then you definitely came up. I've seen a couple of NEC XM29 models popping up around craigslist and ebay here and there all with the price above $1000. It seems very unrealistic that anybody can expect to sell at that price regardless of how sought after it is.

I thought dip switch settings were the same across all models which is 2 and 7 on and the rest off. That's what i use for my XP37. I think phonedork used the same dip switch settings when he had the plus version of your monitor. I don't have an extra remote but you could always try looking on ebay.

And for gods sake, connect your system using an rgb cable! The monitor handles s video pretty nicely but rgb is still superior.

Switches 2 and 7 on which bank? There are 2 sets. I will absolutely hook it up with RGB, but this whole pickup came unexpectedly so I had zero RGB stuff with me. I keep it at work with my PVM-20M4U. :)

Congrats man and thank you for the story and go RGB. Also go for groovymame which is great and plugs into the 15pin second RGB connection without any additional needed device. Once again congrats.

@tacoguy64 that xp37 must be a beast. I would love to see how it looks. I have to be 5 to 7 feet away from the xm29p, any closer my eyes start hurting.

Didn't know there were two sets of dip switches on your model.
I just have one set and its on 2 and 7 because that was the default and everything works so i'm not messing with it.

I think i posted some pictures of the beast on the fudoh thread.
That thing is heavier than the xm29 by about 100lbs. so you will need another person to help you.

Even the XM29 is heavy for 1 person to lift without risking any type of back injury.

I figured out the remote with the help of some other XM29 owners. For anyone who might need it, I have 6 and 8 on DIP SW 1 in the up position, and everything on DIP SW 2 in the down position.

I hooked up my Genesis via RGB last night, since supposedly it uses C-sync and wouldn't need a stripper, but I couldn't get it to sync. Oh well. I'll need to buy an external stripper, or a new SCART>BNC with a LM1881 or whatever built in, but that's for another day. I am moving shortly and can't spend money on that sort of stuff right now.

This might be a longshot, but a guy named Vincent bought a PVM-2530 from me not too long ago, and was in town from Wisconsin.. Isn't you is it?

Anyways, I got moved into my new place, got my hands on a new SCART>BNC cable with a stripper and briefly enjoyed some RGB glory last night!
