It's a shame how much the popularity of the Persona titles have hurt the other games.
I've got a feeling that SMT IV (which is still much too animeish for my taste) is the closest we're gonna get to the darker style of the previous main games these days.

I actually think SMT IV is really good in terms of atmosphere, world, story, gameplay, etc.

It just has two minor problems (no defense stat, saving during dungeons), that really drag the game down IMO. Still good, but could've been one of the best in the franchise if they hadn't done that.

In case you didn't already expect it, Persona 5 has been delayed to next summer, though there is a new trailer to see.

Something called "Shin Megami Tensei IV Final" has been announced - despite the name it's supposedly a brand new game, and will be out in Japan in February.

Whoa! Looking forward to SMTIV final. Hopefully, the tone'll be more like III than IV, although the art style is leaning it more towards IV...not that will make it bad in anyway.

P5 looks awesome.
2016~2017 has a potential to become a great 'season' for Japanese RPG's.
Guess the good PS4 sales helped re-motivate the studios.
(I'm not including that silly FFXV vaporware)

Great news. Seems like they're taking fan feedback into consideration, so hopefully that'll fix the difficulty issues IV had.

Not a fan of the protagonist though. If it's the boy in the front of that ad pictur we got.

Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.

If we're not talking world wide, You can count 2015 as well since Fire Emblem If and Xenoblade Chronicles X are already out in Japan.

I've always been a fan of the Megaten games. They are my favourite RPGs because of the dark themes and the nice difficulty. I really do wish that they would release a SMT5 for consoles, that would be epic. IV is the only SMT I haven't tried because I never bought a 3DS, but I am no really considering buying one. I'll also get to play other titles on my wishlist like MH4.

I am also looking forward to P5, I don't mind that they have delayed, I want it as polished as ever.

They've got my interest piqued again. I like that it's not just same old same old, but they're kinda experimenting with the formula like Nocturne.

The tidbit about "revamped stats" or whatever seems like a guarantee defense will be back. I just hope "save anywhere" is kicked to the curb as well (sadly doubt it though).

One of those "Japanese panel plays/talks about game" videos. No idea if any of what they're saying is insightful, heh.

The announcement of this new game made me buy SMT4. I heard lots of criticism about its balance and "dungeons" but the soundtrack is excellent, and I guess an average SMT is still a great game, so I don't think I'll regret the purchase. Plus, it doesn't hurt to play this as a build-up to SMT4F. With this, Devil Survivor and Soul Hackers, the 3DS has become quite the SMT machine and I am defintely not complaining about it. I still have a few of these games to finish before this new release.

Haha, yeah, we can count on further fuck-ups for sure. I am fed up with Atlus' hijinks with PAL regions as well but thanks to the homebrew region free loaders on the 3DS, importing the US versions wouldn't be too difficult. That's what I did with DeSu : OC and now SMT4 though it means I'll miss out on the DLC, which isn't an issue for me as I despise DLC and wouldn't have bought some anyway.

On a related-ish note, Atlus has apparently been a jerk on YouTube lately.

Which game do you mean? If it's SMT4 Final, I haven't seen anything one way or the other myself.

Oh, sorry. I ignored the link and just assumed you had to be talking about SMT IV Final, since SMT IV vanilla has been out forever by now.

There's been no word, which is very suspect. Oh well, I know most of the spoilers by now. Some craaaaaazy stuff going on in Final.

Also, boy is Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker's audio crap. Or maybe the Vita just has me spoiled. Possibly both.

The Fire Emblem crossover thing's localized title is Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and it's out in late June.

But aren't all the SMT games about the apocalypse?

That said, it's probably a lot less confusing subtitle than "final" which makes it come across like some sort of "GOTY edition".

I'm still interested in #FE, but I'll either wait until it goes on sale or pick it up used. There are too many other interesting games coming out in June to support one from an awful publisher.
