Shmup related literature and memorabilia
Hello all,
I often liken Shmuppers whom I know to metal fans who similarly collect many things related to their favourite genre.
I wondered how many of you chaps collected Shmup memorabilia and literature such as posters, books, manga, models, toys, VHS, Laserdiscs, DVDs, etc. in addition to the actual Shmups themselves.
I personally have quite a few items that I have collected over the years from posters to strategy guides for Shmups and even Japanese programming books that feature Shmups.
I would like to hear how far gone some of you chaps are.
Cheers,
Minty.

Re: Shmup related literature and memorabilia
I like all the shooter related stuff, like artwork, lit, superplays, merch, etc, but I can't seem to hold onto it long enough to collect it or anything. Ultimately, I think it just doesn't capture me the same way the games do. So games is the only thing I collect.

Re: Shmup related literature and memorabilia
I used to collect VGM on vinyl, and had a special affinity for shmup (and Dragon Quest) records. Those are rather limited, though.
I've always been curious about what's in those little guidebooks that exist for certain shmups (I think the console Darius games had guides released for example) but I don't expect they'd be useful enough to me to justify buying them. My collecting days are largely over, I think - too easy to get a short thrill of opening a box, then forget that it's in my closet.

Give me all the lore.
No seriously. With fighting games and rts, I tend to get more curious about or interested in the setting and characters the more enraptured I become in the gameplay. Same with shmups, though there's often not as much to go by.
The Tales of Alltynex guidebook is pretty cool from that perspective. The Batrider and Garegga stuff Blackoak translated is also fantastic.

Re: Shmup related literature and memorabilia
Often there are images of the characters and ships that were not used elsewhere to be found in the strategy guides. I quite like them as a sort of 'document' to accompany the Shmup.
The one I am happy to own the most is the doujin RECCA book that I bought from Rancor in 2011.
I also like seeing all the design images and schematics for the ships used in the Shmups too - I love blueprints.
It is worth looking at some of the manga too if you can get them. An easy to get hold off one would be the Area 88 manga I would say.

Let me search for it but if not then I will take some photos.Squire Grooktook wrote:MintyTheCat wrote:doujin RECCA bookTell us more
It was a book and a DVD. The DVD was a rip taken from a VHS that was released eons ago.
I thought most of you chaps knew about this

Re: Shmup related literature and memorabilia
does that Recca book have dev interviews, or annotated concept art? if so i'd love to translate that stuff.
Speaking of which, I found a lot of concept art for shmups in Gamest and Arcadia during my research at the Diet Library. Alone they don't really constitute a worthy update for my site, but I'm planning to put them all together in a single update soon. Dragon Blaze, Vasara 1&2, others I can't remember offhand...

Re: Shmup related literature and memorabilia
It has a whole bunch of stuff, but I'm not even sure what some of it is. It does have a detailed guide on how to beat the game and the bosses. I took a sample photo some years ago.blackoak wrote:does that Recca book have dev interviews, or annotated concept art? if so i'd love to translate that stuff.

Right, I had waited for eons for a proper RECCA fan. I have an unopened copy that you can have as I know you will do good things with it, Blackoak.blackoak wrote:does that Recca book have dev interviews, or annotated concept art? if so i'd love to translate that stuff.
PM me your Address and you shall be the owner of this RECCA set!

Same. Collecting games CIB is more than enough excitement for me. Both the chase and the catch, haha!CIT wrote:I like all the shooter related stuff, like artwork, lit, superplays, merch, etc, but I can't seem to hold onto it long enough to collect it or anything. I do enjoy the soundtracks, artbooks, DVDs and so forth, but I'm totally satisfied with digital (aka PIRATE

Having said that, the (now sadly absent) image of a superplay-stocked shelf at the top of sven's DVD/VHS thread always brought a tear to my eye! I wonder if he still has that pic, it's bonerizing.

It's the collection going up in flames I worry about, to the point of a fireproof cabinet.
(for media only - boxes and such on the shelf, so I can admire 'em with a cigar and a BORRLE O' SCOTCH while totally not dozing off and burning the place down ;3 )

I've got a Kyuukyoku Tiger poster and the Soldier Blade ship you can see in my avatar. In addition to some more normal stuff like PCB art.

Re: Shmup related literature and memorabilia
At the moment the only STG-related product I have is the Battle Garegga VHS+CD from Gamest vol.27.
Other than that, I primarily collect images, videos and documents of tournaments, such as the Hudson Caravan festivals.
By the way (maybe it's not so related to the subject, but) I'm looking for photos or videos of the Summer Carnival '92 (the actual tournament). Any help?

Re: Shmup related literature and memorabilia
I've got quite a few STG artbooks, and a couple other collectibles. Off the top of my head:
DFK artbook
Futari artbook
Ibara artbook
Cave shooting artworks collection
SDOJ SLE artbook
SDOJ small artbook (from comiket or somesuch)
Darius Odyssey artbook
Plus Pink Bullets #1 (will we ever see a sequel?); two small artbooks about doujin game packaging design, which prominently feature several STG; the RC Berg Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou model kit; Mushihimesama: The Secret Lover (and artbook); Shooting Game Algorithm Maniax, a book about programming for STG; and issues 1 and 2 of Joystick Gamers, photography magazines about arcades. Plus I think I have Ningen (an artbook by Tomoyuki Kotani, who did art for Ibara, Pink Sweets, and Mushihimesama) and the Espgaluda II artbook on the way here from rancor.
I'd love to own a poster or two but I'm not made of money, and the cost of getting an actual poster and then getting it properly framed gets pretty high pretty fast.
In general I like to collect artbooks, and have amassed a pretty reasonable collection of stuff over the years. Generally if there's a game or anime I really enjoy the look of, I'll try to get ahold of what I can.

Couple figurines on top of my cab. Never was a huge doll fan like Elixir but some are alright, help jazz up the cab a bit.
I own a few art books and such, OSTs, super plays.
Big thing for me is posters though. LOVE Posters for games, have some from games I don't even have. GP did me a solid when he left Japan and threw in some he had left over in his closet in with my gamengai shipment and I will forever love him for it. Posters are fucking awesome. I care way more about a cave PCB coming with a poster than box or artwork. Framing can be expensive but I used Dave K's suggestion of plexiglass cut to fit with some cheap clamps and it works so well.
God I think I have ALL the DDP DFK posters now. There has to be like 10. There are those 5 mini posters of the bosses, the one from the Superplay cover, the 3 Ships one, the Elemental dolls one. Thank sweet Jesus I hate DeathSmiles as there has to be 5+ posters for that trash heap of a game but as I hate it I don't feel the need to collect for it.

I have the ibara book too and the larger Cave art book.
I have just moved house but I will see about getting some photos taken of some of the stuff that I have.
I agree, it would be cool to see more Shmup fanzines and issues of Pink Bullets. I still have an unopened copy of Pink Bullets if anyone missed out and wants one.

Also, I have some Shmup models for R-Type and ikaruga but as yet are not painted.
I do not have any Shmups posters at all but I have some nice arcade posters for R-Type Leo and dogyyuun which are framed.
I might be alone on this but I would love to see a book that has the artwork and front covers of Shmups as we have seen some excellent art over the years in the Shmup genre.
They have done similar things for Horror films but of course that has a bigger uptake.

Some great R-Type models and literature there.
I am still looking for the Image-Fight Gaming-Historica model. I have the R9 shown here but it is not built or painted.
I shall have to take some photos of my collection.
