The single best video game ever made according to you ? (OP)
Re: The single best video game ever made according to you ?
Question for those who picked Super Street Fighter II X; which port do you consider the best ?
I'd think Saturn, some say DC, dunno...

I have the PCB
I haven't played the ports but from what I've gathered, the DC one seems to be regarded as the best one.

Re: The single best video game ever made according to you ?
DC is easily the best port, it was the foundation for HD Remix, even.
Still, nothing is as good as the PCB in this case, as the DC version still has some issues (the speed setting not kicking in until the announcer yells "FIGHT" being the worst of them). Then you have to ask yourself if you prefer JP or US Turbo speeds.

none cuz SF 2 is LAME
(i'll not deny how much it influenced the genre though)
probably persona 3 for me. Just such an amazing game. I'll admit it's more for the story and characters because it's gameplay is not that good but it's passable i guess. Persona 4 and third strike come close but man persona 3.

In this case ports are out of the question. PCB or MAME for me.Xyga wrote:Question for those who picked Super Street Fighter II X; which port do you consider the best ?

Red is correct. It's amazing how emulation instantly transformed the Saturn from an awesome, highly desirable system for arcade ports to a paperweight that's only good for the exclusive Treasure games. We're basically a Steam port of Radiant + Guardian Heroes away from the Sega Saturn becoming almost completely worthless. :OTheRedKnight wrote:In this case ports are out of the question. Saturn's arcade ports has awesome music arrangements.
And it has nice amount of games u would love on it's own.
But, ofc, all depends on ur tastes etc.

DC Super Turbo is essentially perfect. Only problem is stick availability. The difference between US Turbo 2 and Japan 3 (the standard tournament speeds) is close to nothing.

I think this is the 1st thing I've ever discovered on the internet that I've found offensive...... great now I'm a sell out.Red is correct. Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: The single best video game ever made according to you ?
I agree. There are several notable ST-V (Saturn based hardware) ports like Cotton 2, as well.Kino wrote: Several of the Saturn's arcade ports are the definitive versions, and it's not a complete slouch in the exclusives department, either. I considered posting a huge explanation to go along with this, and I still may at some point, but for now I'll just state it as-is: NetHack is the single best video game ever made, according to me.

Rez HD
Knowing about the 98% shotdown Tera fights, there is no dull moment in this game. My primary motivations to invest in gaming equipment and home theater tech has always been to play this game.
I feel like snarking on the picks with multiple votes, like an asshole:
Castlevania SotN ~ The item system is crap, the magic system needs work, the rare item drop system is depressing, and the endgame is lousy. Say no to Tentacle Hentai Dracula.
Chrono Trigger ~ The writing doesn't hold up and a silent protagonist with a silent villain doesn't work. Queen Zeal in Black Omen, Kansas was the final dungeon.
DOOM II ~ Fuck the color keycards, forever.
R-Type ~ I dislike much of the stage design, bosses, and music. The following of this game is like celebrating a Sony Walkman.
Raiden DX - AC ~ Jam a push pin into the Start button for Guts points? No. Point blank exploit every interesting part with the red weapon? No.
Robotron 2084 ~ Go to a store's kids department, move all the product to a single isle, then press the buttons of every toy simultaneously. This is Robotron.
Silent Hill 2 ~ If not the controls, then the unessential characters with the tension-breaking writing wasting so much time serving some stupid rationalization about what only an individual in the town can see. Filler, filler everywhere.
Super Metroid ~ I was only motivated to see the boss fights and sick mods to my default gun. Maybe it'd be better if it were 25 minutes? Super Metroid: Boss Rush For Weapons. Chozo have always been stupid.
Super Street Fighter II X: Grand Master Challenge ~ Fighting CPU is an exercise in exploiting AI with the same four moves, topped with an unrewarding conclusion. Fighting a human requires a rigorous set of agreed-upon competitive circumstances to begin truly appreciating the mechanics.
Tetris ~ I'm not against selecting simple games as a top pick, but Tetris games always felt like a really good beta/"early access" that nobody has ever released in a meaningfully complete form. It's a great idea, I should spend more time with Grandmaster(s), but it's too simple a stripped routine to honestly say "this blows away everything else that has ever come out." I zone out awhile playing it, but I don't get any euphoria that makes me pick "very satisfied" on some survey. Tetris is like the apple of videogames. If this question were "What is your favorite food ever made" and you said Apple, I'd get the impression you'd need to go out and experience more.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

EXECUTE DEFENSE PROTOCOL "INTERNET SLAPFIGHT"
Yeah they're not good. :[DJ Incompetent wrote:Silent Hill 2 ~ If not the controls,
The script expends precisely one line of ambiguous dialogue and a single speculative memo on that aspect of the series. And the two characters not inextricably tied to Jimmy's predicament get maybe 15 minutes screen time combined, always opposite to and played directly off of him for a bare minimum of contrast and thematic development. I'm not seeing the "filler" thing - SH2 is quite terse, though not to the point of "spacejesus did it" (™ and © BryanM) meaninglessness.then the unessential characters with the tension-breaking writing wasting so much time serving some stupid rationalization about what only an individual in the town can see. I think this is a case of you being unable to process the true majesty of the work. As with elder gods, it takes a certain minimum brain capacity to process the true incredible presence of Chrono Trigger.DJ Incompetent wrote:Chrono Trigger ~ The writing doesn't hold up and a silent protagonist with a silent villain doesn't work. Chrono Trigger is more important of an achievement than medical science.

Chrono Trigger is total garbage, though. It's bad even by the terrible standards of 16 bit JRPGs.Giest118 wrote:I think this is a case of you being unable to process the true majesty of the work. Well, anyone can take any well regarded work or person and treat it as shit.
There's a rule 34 for pr0n, so why not a rule for defecating on everything people love ?
Actually I'm surprised I haven't found an anti-STG pamphlet here yet.

I guess this thread is Attack of the Contrarians II: It Isn't, Though.
Re: The single best video game ever made according to you ?
DJ's approach seems more interesting than naming a single game out of all the great ones out there. That way there could be some discussion.
Final Fantasy / Dragon Quest style JRPGs (which includes Chrono Trigger) are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to games. Mechanics wise they are indefensible by any standard; braindead easy, simple, easily exploitable, full of filler, super repetitive due to the limited options you have... and the plots are fine if you are around twelve years old? Also leveling up characters is probably the single worst mechanic ever. Used to love the genre as a kid (cleared every classic you can name), now I can see all their shortcomings and I'm unable to touch them again.
Symphony of the Night dumbed platformers down forever. Poorly thought level design that forces you to go over the same boring zones over and over, which also forces you to grind unless you actively avoid fighting every single enemy you see. Played normally its difficulty is non-existent, the supposed exploration is mostly limited to wandering around and sometimes breaking a wall, puzzles amount to using a newly acquired ability to reach somewhere you couldn't before. It has nice spritework.
Agree about Silent Hill 2 being hurt by filler. I don't have complaints about the story, but being forced to run around empty streets that pose little danger for several minutes is boring. Pyramid head looks cool, but the concept was pulled off much better by Capcom on Resident Evil 2/3.
I'd say that the first game is overall the best (despite some shortcomings, such as poor visual design for enemies, the weakest out of the first three in that regard) for the genius of turning a hardware limitation into its major strenght, its superb sound direction and overall world design. A remake with updated graphics and better controls would be one of the best things ever. 3 has the best puzzles, and I'd also put it over 2 for that reason.

Fighting games are meant to be played against another human. Single player doesn't factor into a game's worth in this genre.DJ Incompetent wrote:Super Street Fighter II X: Grand Master Challenge ~ Fighting CPU is an exercise in exploiting AI with the same four moves, topped with an unrewarding conclusion
I don't see which set would that be. The game does have a steep learning curve, but that's for the better. Actual real problems would be some characters not having truly good answers to projectiles, and some really ugly matchups that hurt the middle tier. Still by a large margin the best ground-based fighting game, relevant 20+ years after its release.Fighting a human requires a rigorous set of agreed-upon competitive circumstances to begin truly appreciating the mechanics.
