I know that Magewell makes some cards with great specs, but I haven't read any in depth reviews yet. There's one post about their USB3 dongle here. I also know that DansGaming bought one of their internal cards.

They also have a Mini PCIe card, which would be interesting for Mini-ITX systems.

Man when will they start releasing capture card that support 5.1 audio channels, its not like its a new tech, heck its been main stream in systems since the PS2 era!!

EDIT: hmm the tech sheet says....

'Support for up to 8-channel IEC60958/IEC61937 audio streams'

so thats up to 7.1 right?, if so colour me intrested!. I currently have a XCAPTURE-1 device, but am having to use a Digital to Analog Audio Converter to remix 5.1 to stereo but it cause audio sync issues that i 'can' sort out in Post but its a pain, so something that would support 5.1 + is interesting! Also what res is 2K?...1440p?

but those were encoded audio streams. For uncompressed multichannel PCM capture you need a higher HDMI level. It's possible today, but it wasn't a few years ago.

So the Magewell supports 5.1 audio channel then?, as my XCAPTURE-1 does not and thats not that old

Is this correct or does the description...

'Support for up to 8-channel IEC60958/IEC61937 audio streams'

refer to something else?

Good spot, ive ordered one now from the UK, should turn up within the next week.

I did email them and got a reply back backup up what you posted....or though it say it supports uncompressed audio so does that mean PCM??. Also the email i got also said it supports 240p capturing also...but im guessing that only going to be via the vga connection.

If these device does support upto 7.1 and also 240p it could one of the best on the market!, and for under £200!

So coincidentally I happened to order one of these on Monday and it arrived today. Figured I would quickly share my first impressions/experiences. Still playing a lot with the dongle though, and will post here as I discover more.

EDIT: This post is about the Magewell XI100DUSB-HDMI USB dongle, not the PCIe Card. Misread the topic title. Oops. :?

First off, I really, really love the fact that this is plug and play with OS X and Linux. This seemed to be one of the very few video capture devices available today that wasn't just compatible with Windows (and that supported recording HDMI at 1080p @ 60fps) and that was a hard requirement for me as I don't own any computers running Windows. The computer I mainly intend to do some speedrun streaming from is actually running Ubuntu, but I may occasionally do some recording from my Macbook here and there.

The intended configuration I wanted to use was to record the output from my Framemeister using this dongle. Plugged it all in and I was able to get OBS recording right away.

I don't see any RGB options under the OBS video source settings for this dongle anywhere or in the kernel dmesg output when I plug the dongle in via USB. The packaging does clearly say "YUYV and RGB24" support. The guy in that post that blizzz linked to did mention needing a custom kernel with some driver fixes from Magewell, so I will need to look into that.

A super annoying problem I found was that there seems to be some kind of frame stuttering with the video coming from the dongle. Here is a video that shows the problem. The most easily visible example of it starts around 30s into the video where you can see the item sprites that are scrolling vertically appearing to bob up and down as it scrolls. Try as I might, fiddling with all the FPS options I can find in OBS, I can't seem to fix this problem. Of course, plugging the HDMI cable into my TV instead and viewing it there it all looks perfect, so I suspect the Framemeister is not the problem.

And of course the YUV vs RGB colour problem with the Framemeister is ever present with this device. Greens look way to bright as-is (even though after the latest Framemeister firmware updates the problem lessened considerably on my HDTV). Still need to play around with some settings to see if I can fix it in addition to needing to see how the supposedly supported RGB24 colour output looks.

EDIT: Oh, and another quick note. I don't recommend leaving this device plugged in when not in use. It gets quite warm when in use. Not super hot to touch, but much much warmer then I would have expected. While writing this post and uploading the test video I had left it plugged in via USB, but had disconnected the HDMI cable and it didn't seem to cool off at all during that time. I'll be just unplugging it completely when I'm not using it in the future.

Gered, when you say "dongle" - I suppose you bought a USB3 version ? (scratch that, Magewell XI100DUSB - as your video says)

Yes, sorry that is correct, it's the USB3 dongle. Should have specified as I guess they do sell non-USB variants.

I think a problem (for our needs) is that the recording app does not sync to the actual framerate the source delivers. Especially with our vintage videogame sources, the refresh rates hover around the usual NTSC specs, but are never spot on. When you run a device like the Framemeister with activated output framelock (sync set to auto), its output gets synced to the input refresh rate and your video recording application will almost certainly do a framerate conversion on the fly.

I'd never much played around with the Framemeister's sync setting. Is it possible a different setting might work better? I assume the problem I noticed is not specific to any one capture card unless they're doing something "bad" with framerate conversions?

If you switch the sync to off you get an output with standard NTSC refresh rates. Possibly worth a try the Magewell reacts differently to that.

Gave it a try, and didn't appear to make a difference. Also tried a bunch of other combinations like setting OBS to capture at 59.94 and also using it's "Leave unchanged" framerate setting, which I assume just uses whatever framerate the source is detected to be running at. Well, will just have to keep playing with it I guess!

Sorry for double post, but as a quick update to the video/capture frame stuttering:

I didn't even think about it at the time, but when I first was plugging everything in, I used whatever USB extension cable I had sitting around as the USB cable that comes with the Magewell USB dongle is only about 2ft long. Of course, the dongle is USB3, the cable it comes with is also a USB3 cable, but the USB extension cable I used I've had for something like 6-7 years now and is definitely not USB3, heh. I forgot that while non-USB3 cables can be used with a USB3 device, the full speed of the device won't be reached. Hooking the dongle up with only USB3 cables fixes the stuttering problem completely (tested with the Framemeister's sync setting both as "off" and "auto"). Overall, a pretty silly mistake!

While recording another test video I have run into a little oddity with either the current Linux build of OBS or the V4L driver and how the dongle interacts with it that maybe has arisen due to the now proper USB3 cable connection. It now seems to be extraordinarily easy to crash the driver by fiddling with the video source settings for the dongle within OBS (e.g. if I want to change the capture resolution). All that I need to do sometimes is simply open the settings window. Annoying. I don't get that problem on Mac.

The output I see in dmesg:
Spoiler

Aside from that, seems to be working great!

EDIT (Nov 12): Going to just add updates in this post instead of bumping this topic repeatedly. Hopefully my experiences will be helpful to anyone coming across this post later, perhaps from Googling this device as there is very little info on it as I write this.

So, I'm still unfortunately getting these crashes a lot. Like 80-90% of the time I open OBS. I've also tried the unstable builds and they don't seem to make any difference. Thinking it may be OBS specific, I tried opening the video capture in VLC and after 1-2 tries everytime it crashes there for me too with the same dmesg output I pasted above.

Unfortunately, I do not have another Linux computer with USB 3.0 ports to test this device on so I can't say whether it's maybe a problem with something else (such as my motherboard) or if it's actually the device itself on Ubuntu 14.04. Some googling of the messages that show up in dmesg at least seem to indicate that crashing issues with USB 3.0 devices is not too uncommon with Ubuntu 14.04 and appears to be a kernel issue. May just have to wait for a fix.

For now, I unfortunately will have to use my Macbook to do any streaming with this device. Not ideal for my setup, but seems there is nothing else I can do at the moment.

EDIT (Nov 13): So, I discovered that I still had another motherboard hidden away in storage that I was originally using with my Linux PC when I first built it, but later swapped it out for a different one that was Hackintosh-friendly. It has USB 3.0 ports too so I figured I would swap out the motherboard and see if the Magewell dongle faired any better. The good news is that it does. No crashes whatsoever now with the alternate motherboard.

The motherboard I was previously using was a Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 on the latest BIOS firmware version. The motherboard I am using now is an ASUS P8P67, again, with the latest BIOS firmware version. Not sure if the problem was specific to my particular Gigabyte motherboard or something problematic across all of those models.

I still notice some frame stuttering in OBS though, however I did just discover that it goes away if I don't capture audio. Hrm.

Re: Magewell Pro Capture HDMI

Ok got my Magewell Pro Capture HDMI device today. To start of with i installed the latest FW which came out a few days ago and also the drive software which was also from this month. I decided to try out Magewells own capture software, 'Magewell CaptureExpress v2.0' upon testing the card out i was unable to get any audio at all, despite in the settings under the audio tab it detecting 6 audio channels....

Image

There just seems to be a complete lack of options for the audio really with only the ability to select audio bitrate, encoder quality and Audio Input (HDMI or Lien In), there does appear to be any other settings like setting between, mono, stereo or even multi channel.

I managed to finally get the audio to work, by loading up OBS and going into the capture device settings and then audio configuration and enabling something called, 'Pin Line Input Mix'....

Image

So without the help of OBS i would still be scratching my head trying to enable the audio within Magewell's capture software, i even tried setting the device i was trying to capture from to stereo to see if that help but still no audio.

As it stands at the moment, the magewell is not capture 5.1 audio it appears to still be stereo only, despite a rep from Magewell telling me that it does capture 5.1 audio. Im not sure if im missing something, there does appear to be a lot of options in the Magewell capture software, so maybe its something im over looking??

I have uploaded a video quickly showing the options of the capture software (alot of the stuff i dont have a clue on, like the EDID stuff).......

Have sent support an email but as of yet haven't had a reply.

But the device does seem to detect 5.1 and 7.1 audio as demonstration in this video...

but i dont have a clue how to capture 5.1 or 7.1 as theres no options to select these audio options!

Ok i got a reply back from magewell today....

"7.1 audio can only be captured by SDK interface. Maybe you can download MWCaptureSDK from website and reference to the example of MultiAudioCapture.
It demonstrates how to caputre 7.1 audio and save it to wave files."

The MWCaptureSDK.zip file can be download here..

http://www.magewell.com/files/MWCaptureSDK.zip

i have downloaded it and there just a bunch of files and folders, do i have to build this in command line to support 5.1 audio or something??

Im at a complete loser here, i got this card as i was under the impression it supported 5.1 and 7.1 capture capabilities out of the box but this doesn't appear to be the case. Can anyone with a bit more experience help out at all??

Sounds like the card can accept 7.1 audio, but the software doesn't support recording it. You need to write your own recording program using the SDK.

What happens when you run "XID_MultiAudioCapture.exe"? Can't start it without the card installed.

Yeah i just found the folder with the XID_MultiAudioCapture.exe file in, upon loading it i was presented with this screen....

Image

I started a game and hit record and it indeed capture the 5.1 audio, which is a massive relief!

Im not sure why they haven't incorporated this ability to record with 5.1 audio into their main capture software program though (Magewell CaptureExpress)??

So what will i need to do now then, run the Magewell CaptureExpress software and disable the audio in that software whilst also running the XID_MultiAudioCapture software and press record on both of them?

If so this isnt ideal as for the raw output files i would then need to combined them together (what software is good at doing that) and then once the 2 files have been combined actually get around to editing the file (cutting out the crap) and then finally re-encode the file. This would add alot more time to the post production of editing my videos.

Just seems very odd that they wouldn't include all this into there main capture software!?

Honestly, I would just return the card as it doesn't do what was advertised. Having to use a separate program to record audio or writing your own software is just a pain.

Yeah it seems odd, that if the card has the ability to capture 5.1 audio then why the heck didnt they allow you to select 5.1 audio in their main capture software!.

I have emailed them back asking the question and weather there software developers could add the option to there main software program. Im just wonder if theres any other capture software out there that has the ability to capture 5.1....as it does appear to be a software handicap and not actual hardware, as we know know if can capture 5.1

Well been playing around with the Pro Capture HMDI card for the past 2 weeks and my impressions of it on the whole are very positive, even in spite of the card (at the moment) not being able to capture up to 7.1 audio as the spec sheet would claim. I bought the card from here in the UK from a company called, ForeFront Imaging (yeah ive never heard of them either) for just over £210 delivered......

http://www.forefrontimaging.com/index.p ... pture-hdmi

Oddly there was no retail box, instructions of driver CD.......

Image

The card is capable of capturing 176x120 up to 2048x1536, or though i have only tested 1080p at the moment. I have been using the card with OBS software rather than the CaptureExpress software found on the MageWell site, i haven't been getting the 'No device detected' message i was with my Micomsoft XCapture-1 USB3 device since moving to Windows 10. With the Micomsoft card i would have to unplug the USB3 cable, disable the device in Device Manager and then plug the UBS3 cable back in and re-enable the device to get the card to be detected by the capture software (should state this didn't always happen but another times for me to lose count) but the Magewell card just seem to be detected 100% of the time which is a point toward the Magewell. Have mainly been using the card to capture gameplay from my Xbox One and havent had any video issues at all, no losted frames (according to OBS), no tearing and the audio and video seems to be in sync better than that of the Micomsoft card (im using Line-In audio not embedded HDMI btw).

Here i feel i should give a break down of my setup. I have a Sony KDL-42W653A (great TV btw), Pioneer VSX-924 AV Receiver, ViewHD HDMI to HDMI + Audio Extractor (to bypass HDCP), FiiO D07 Digital to Analog Audio Converter (for downmix 5.1 to 2 channel, HDMI for video and Toslink for audio) and finally to my Magewell Pro Capture card using HDMI for just the video and then a stereo phono cable to the supplied DB9 to YC+Composite+Analog Audio+Component breakout cable, so not a straight forward setup as some might have but thought it was important to give info on it.

Now an issue i have with the card, and not sure if its just due to me using the breakout cable and weather its present if using HDMI for audio, but the volume is way too amplied, ive always left my capture cards audio volume setting along and next had to fiddle with them, but with this card a loud noise like explosions just get completely distorted. Just watch 5 minutes of this clip to see what im on about espeically when the C4 goes off....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8Zh1YW ... e&t=17m26s

and this was with me even using 'amplifydb(-12.0)' in my avisynth script when editing the video for upload to Youtube to try and lower the volume when i noticed there was an issue with it being WAT too loud, but that still didnt seem to be enough!!.

The last 2 capture cards i have had seemed to just have one device entry but this MageWell seems to be listed under Auido device and Video device, and also the audio is listed under 'Recording Devices' in the audio options in windows itself.....

Image

is this normal for capture card to have the audio separate from the video in device manager?

After some trial and error i found that i need to set the volume level (under Recording devices) to 50% and then the audio didn't seem to distort when explosions and other loud effects happened.

I also noticed in order to get the card to output any audio at all i had to enable an option under the heading of 'Audio Mixer Audio Properties' from default this was disabled and i had to enable it in order to get the audio to be captured......

Image

oddly all other options in this menu window are greyed out and cannot be altered.

There is a large selection of settings to fiddle with on this card and if im honest i dont know what alot of them should be set to, i have found best result with the following options.....

Image

As i said i have no idea what half these setting are and what they should be set at, and why theres a section for 'Input' and then 'Capture'!?. For some reason if i change Colour Format to 'RGB' in the 'Capture' section the screen turn a shade of green but 'RGB' option in the 'Input' section is the only option that DOESN'T turn the screen a shade of green!!.

Im guessing the 'Low Latency Mode' reduces capture lag if playing from the PC your capturing on??, but then begs the question why you'd ever want this option disabled!!? Heres the rest of the settings that can be altered....

Image

Overal im happy with the card and the only slight issues atm seem to be audio related, hopefully these can get ironed out in future updates via Firmware and drivers.

There's cheaper capture cards available on the market atm but im not sure a lot of them have the feature set that this one does!??

You bought a £200 capture card without any documentation and you think setting BT.601 for 1080p is correct... I don't want to live on this planet any more. FeelsBadMan

Being serious for a second, why is 5.1 audio capture so important for you? Like as you just demonstrated all your content is going on YouTube where configuring that properly is hard. Not to mention <1% of people will use it. You'd be best going for a more recognised and documented card than this.

A card that overpeaks out of the box is pretty ridiculous though. That's a problem £5 EZCap devices had which is fixed just like you showed. I don't expect a £200 card to overpeak. That's fucking retarded.

It's probably just bad software. The audio inputs might be calibrated for balanced input which would explain the 12db difference. Blackmagic offers both settings as well.

Oh shit good spot, i changed it back to BT.709, theres also BT.2020 but i understnad thats for like 4k stuff right, not sure theres any benefit for that.

Regarding the 5.1, i basically wanted to remove as many devices between my capture card and the console as possible, as when i capture im playing on my Sony TV and have the audio pumped though my amp at 5.1 i dont really want to game in 2015 and be forced to play in stereo. Having a card thats capable of support 5.1 audio capture would allow me to have less devices/cable in my setup whilst enjoy 5.1 audio, then when encoding i can just downmix to 2 channel (ripbot does this via drop down menu so it super easy) infact i dont even know how YouTube would handle 5.1 audio!?.

Just for fun heres Rise of the Tomb Raider in 144p.....

guess thats how it would look on a GBA lol

Oh no it needs to be alot great that a -12db, probably something like -24 at least. For instance i think ive settled on having the devices audio at just 40% now!!!! and it seem to around what the Xcapture card audio level is like. I'll fire them a support email stating the problem (their probably sick of hearing from me now what with the emails back and forth about the 5.1 issue)

Just curious, since there is mention of being able to capture down to 144p, how can such low resolutions be captured? It only looks to support HDMI, composite, s-video, and component. No indication of RGB.
