Good job there, Seahawk. Y'know you're just about to beat Plasmablood's score.

Well, try to go for a harder Pro mode or a 2nd loop clear of the game then. :) There hasn't been a video of these clearing PCE Detana Pro mode or loop 2. So when you have the time, show me what you've got!

From my special mode score, I think you should add that I am using Ootake.

Improvement! Although I know can still do better, I just have to avoid stupid deaths. All of the ones on the second loop could probably have been avoided with better dodging and luck. Many times I was just instants away from a red bell.

Tinotormed, do you know if there is a special ending for clearing professional mode, like on the PCE-CDROM verison of Gradius II?

Picking up blue bells (speed up) can have you dodge even farther.

Nope, I don't think there is. Play the game, and it still looks the same.

Not a score update, but an update on what I played Gradius II on (I noticed I never listed it), add it as Ootake. I guess my excitement to have finally owned a legit copy at that time made me forget to add that.

Gradius

Image

Perikles – 1,709,200 – 3-8 – PC Engine Duo-R

I know that I'm capable of getting over 2 million points, it just doesn't come together properly. Either I die all over the place and then miraculously get to the fourth loop with a (comparatively) lousy score or I play well only to die on a bad spot in the third loop.

Salamander – Beginner

Image

Perikles – 3,333,400 – 4-5 – PC Engine Duo-R

Salamander – Expert

Image

Perikles – 2,680,800 – 3-5 – PC Engine Duo-R

This is a perfect example of a port that's significantly better than the original. The fourth boss doesn't behave like a maniac, your shield doesn't get destroyed by power-ups, the hit detection is actually accurate, the checkpoint system works like a charm etc. I'm so glad they made this version!

Parodius Da! - Normal Mode

Image

Perikles – 905,400 – 2-4 – Octopus – PC Engine Duo-R

Got this on my first try thanks to all the practice I got with the PS1 and SFC ports. I could get a better score but I strongly prefer the SFC version over this one so I'm not going to put more effort into it.

Gradius II

Image

Perikles – 1,258,300 – 2-5 – Type 4/FF – PC Engine Duo-R

Milked the hell out of the boss rush. Since extends are given every 70,000 points in this port it should be possible to counterstop the game at that point as long as you don't lose lives prematurely. It gets really old after a while, though.

I've also cleared the first loop of Detana!! TwinBee, my score, however, is atrocious.

This was long overdue. One of the most exhaustive credits I had so far, alongside the Slap Fight counterstops and the Hellfire 6-ALL. I needed that first spot!

Damn nice run! How does it compare to the Arcade version? I know this one has an extra level but is the difficulty similar otherwise?

Thanks!

The difficulty is fairly similar if one compares the first loop of both versions, but there's a massive difference between the subsequent loops of the respective versions. The dreaded zub rush in 2-2 arcade seems to never evolve into a full-grown problem in the PCE version, even on loop 3 or 4. The suicide bullets start to get problematic by the time loop 3 starts, though. It's necessary to tank a few spots with the shield since it gets too crowded to properly dodge. The PCE version would be a lot harder if not for the slowdown that kicks in when too much is happening at once.

One aspect that takes time to get used to is the laser, however. I find it to be almost useless outside the first two stages, it just does not seem to register multiple hits like it does in the arcade. It's not a problem against normal enemies, but it's startlingly difficult to take out moais, those tentacle-armed brain cells or sometimes even the big core. On top of that the fire rate of the pea shooter and double has been improved quite a bit, thus I recommend playing with the double most of the time.

Salamander - Beginner

Perikles - 4,972,800 - 5-5 - PC Engine Duo-R

It was always bothering me that I missed the top spot by such a dinky amount, hence I played it again after the Gradius II 2-ALL. It cannot be overstated just how great this port is. The difficulty rises in meaningful ways after every loop while checkpoint recovery still remains possible if very difficult.

Gradius II

Image

Perikles - 1,361,900 - 3-2 - Type 4/FF - PC Engine Duo-R

Pretty bad spot to end the run, but what can you do. Comparatively low score since I didn't do any milking this time around. I should probably try to get the first place in Detana!! TwinBee sometime down the road, too...

Unrelated to this topic, but could you add my amazing Famicom Image Fight score to the respective table, Despatche?

EmperorIng - 698,550 - 2-1 - --------- - PC Engine Duo-R

Whoa! How is everyone's score so much higher?!?

A delightful game that I've gotten to practice and play hard over the last week. Losing a life in the later stages, when in conjunction with the finicky nature of the bells, seems to end up as a near-death sentence more often than not. Plenty of times I would be doing well until the penultimate stage and have things devolve from there.

I finally cleared the first loop this time because I was able to no-miss until the final stage, when the evil Twinbee clones attack right before the final boss. I proceeded to cheese my way to victory, losing 3 or 4 lives.
