Should I play my 720p PS3 games on my PC CRT?

Post by atheistgod1999 »

I got a Dell CRT for retro PC gaming, but I don't have a retro PC, so I haven't been using it. I've tested it using my Windows 7 PC, however, and it can do 720p. I mostly played indies and stuff like that until like 2014, so I haven't played most AAA PS3 games. Currently, it's hooked up to our 1080p HDTV, where the 720p games look slightly blurry. Should I get a VGA adapter and play them on the old PC monitor?

I play PS3 and Xbox 360 on a PC CRT, and it looks gorgeous. Cool thing about the PS3 is it will switch between the different resolutions to give you the best picture (1080p for Wipeout HD, 720p for just about everything else). I use the original model of the HD Fury adapter to convert HDMI to VGA. Also tried a component to VGA converter and it didn't look as good, maybe because the component out of the PS3 just isn't that great.

For Xbox 360, you need to switch to the proper resolution in your menu depending on the game. The upside for the 360 though is that a lot of games have 1024x768 support, so you can get a pretty hi-def 4:3 image for a lot of games. Off the top of my head, Shadow Complex and Halo 3 support 1024x768.

Regarding PC, I'm not sure why you think you need to use a retro PC with your Dell CRT, you can still use it with a modern PC. Actually, most PC games still support 4:3 resolutions, and some of the ones that don't can hacked to support it.

I found myself switching to 720p for Wipeout HD (which is quite a hassle) as I experienced frequent framedrops in 1080p :?

The biggest problem you will encounter is that 30FPS on a 60hz CRT doesn't quite look the best in motion.
That and ugly upscaling when games don't render native to the display resolution set.

yes, do it. most all xbox 360 and ps3 games are 720p and thankfully CRTs can render multiple different resolutions, the CRT also just looks good, even on average PC monitors. Give it a try and let us know what you think. That's all I have my games hooked up to.

Yes, try it. If you can find a relatively late PC CRT with a flat screen, better still. I've connected my Xbox360, using a VGA cable, and it looks great.

Tell how it went.

yah the xbox 360 has an upscaling chip built into it, so you can set the resolution of your display and it does the upscaling.

On the other hand, most ps3 games just output at 1280x720 to your display. the 360 does a better job of upscaling than my tv does, it is good quality. I have a fairly recent 46" Samsung LED. it tends to look sharper with the 360 doing the upscaling.

the vast majority of ps3 and 360 games never have a higher internal resolution than 1280x720.
