When I'm really determined I've played a single shmup for maybe 8 hours in one day before, though not all in one sitting. That's as close to "full shmup" as it comes for me, I guess.

Ended up in bed for three weeks. Couldn't talk. Couldn't close my mouth. My sister had to wipe the drool away. I was crying most of the time, just sort of gurgling away. Eventually I recovered use of my arms and tried to pull myself toward the cab. They found me scorpioned on the floor across from it, twitching and pawing the ground with my face. It got worse as I got stronger, but eventually I learned not to struggle. When I'd completely calmed down they let me walk around my room and eat meals downstairs, but it was a while before they let me do anything but read. I felt pretty much OK at this point because I'd worked out a route. I just had to wait until they'd let me outside, then I'd use a bomb to lower rank and it would be easier to escape. I tried to improve my theoretical understanding while I waited. I'd memorized all the enemy placements and I knew their patterns, so I played out various situations in my mind, drew the angles of bullets in the condensation on the window. One of the best days was when I realized I might be able to point blank one boss for a speed kill of that phase. I couldn't wait to try it. Next time I got the chance, I said it would be nice to get some fresh air. Everyone nodded and smiled, said it would do me good. My parents walked with me to car so we could go to the nature reserve. I opened the door and made like I was getting in before quickly jumping back and shouting "BOMBA" in my booming voice. The shockwave deafened everyone for a minute, and I was already down the street, heading for the arcade. I started using my laser to destroy houses, sucking up their contents in automatically. Police cars came up behind me but I could hear their sirens before they were close enough to snipe me. I increased my speed so they'd come further up the screen then shot back like lightning to destroy them while their handguns were sealed. By the time I got to the arcade I'd destroyed enough houses and cars to earn one credit, so I went straight for the usual cab. I sat down inhaled deeply. I wanted to take a moment because it had been so long. I let the attract sequence play until the scoreboard came up. My name was there over and over again and on the character select screen I could tell my waifu was impressed. I don't know what was going on outside but I wasn't going to let it distract me from the game. I had a great run up until I got to the boss I wanted to pointblank. Just as I was getting into position a SWAT team burst into the arcade, converging on my position. I wasn't prepared for the rank increase and I couldn't dodge both them and the boss. I ended up dying, yes, but it wasn't a wasted run: I didn't get hit by the boss.

I'm a hobbyist first, competitor second. More interested in chasing RAREZ than WRs. So no. ¦3 As a legendary man of the forum once said, competence is what I generally aim for. I do Try Hard at stuff I love though.

Maybe this counts? When I was going for some Gradius V high scores I'd regularly have 3 hour+ single credit runs. The longest credit I had was around 6 hours. While you can pause the game, I limited my pauses to only being used at the beginning of a loop (I was recording the footage so I didn't want pauses littered throughout the replays).

Also, I found that if I walked away for more than a few minutes I was no longer "in the zone" and my skills went down the toilet so I pretty much limited my break time between loops. The longest run I ever did without ANY break whatsoever was over 4 hours.

I guess I sorta did with Caladrius score chasing. When I was first routing and attempting the no-miss score record with Lilith all my free time was spent on it; the weekends were 8-hour play sessions. I would wake up and play while sitting in my boxers, not really even stopping to eat anything decent, and play until night fell. It was definitely a sort of obsession. I don't regret it, and taking that score built a ton of confidence (arrogance?) in me as a player, but I'm not sure I should do that again now that I'm married.

These days my wife is playing Caladrius herself, already 1cc-ed, but I haven't seen her go full shmup yet. She played the fuck out of her first 1cc (Infinite Burst) though, not sure if she was secretly full-shmupping it while I was at work.

I go through phases were I would only play shmups for like an entire month, then dropping them for 2-3 months. Rinse and then repeat.

These days I like to divide my time between extremely different types of games and genres. Rpg's, shmups, fighters, platformers, etc. I try to keep up on the games I'm playing through, but play a different combination of them each play session.

Since I came back to shmups I'm going vaguely full shmup with Mushihimesama.

I'd previously gone full shmup to clear Imperishable Night on Hard. That was embarrassing.

When I was trying to improve my progression in Strikers-II to an all clear, I played about 70 hours or so within a span of less than a month.

I only remember one another span of a month where I played even half (obviously not exactly, probably a little above half) of that. I played a lot while I was trying to clear Gradius V (and also trying to unlock higher loops).

edit: Also remembered UnderDefeat, when going for the clear of first loop. I played that one a fair bit (probably somewhat less than Gradius 5) in a span of probably 3 weeks or so.

That's weak shit. True shmuppers would play 70 hours a day, 15 days a week, for all 30 or so months of the year, just to increase their PB by 0.000001%. And that's not counting the replay watching, adderal enemas, fap breaks, and dinner when your mom gets sick of your shit and makes you eat.

Very few may go full shmup and survive with their sanity and foreskins intact.

I've gone fullshmup only on very few occasions. But these days I try and control the habit by mixing it with all the other gaming genres I love, and I love too many. I share Squire Grooktook's eclectic tastes.

I did go through a fighter phase though, where all I played was SF4, I have tons of hours into that game.

Maybe? I've put in about 65ish hours into my Raiden Fighters Aces collection. In RF1 I got the 1cc with 34million BUT that was on "Normal" mode, not Arcade--on which I've only made it to stage 5 I think with 18ish million. RF2 and Jet are awesome too but much more complicated in number/complexity of getting all the Micluses and bonuses.

EDIT: And good god I would absolutely go full shmup for Raiden Fighters if they put in on Steam! Would love to have non-bullshit leaderboards that don't clear periodically for no good reason. Man...I will become a hermit if RF ever goes to Steam. A very smelly, happy, hermit.

Now I think about it I have gone full shmup by my standards for STGT a fee times. Specifically for Espgaluda and Gokujyou Parodius both of which I played for about 20 hours in a week. By my standards that is full shmup!

On topic, I spent 3 or 4 months playing only Gradius V. But that pales in comparison to 4 or 5 years of only playing Starcraft. Now I have more games than I know what to do with. Just started digging into Caladrius Blaze.

I remember I'd spend over 2 weeks to clear R-Type Delta on easy difficulty, 1 week playing Guwange, practice and clear FC Gradius II "special run" circa 10 days.
