Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
What kind of light are you playing in? Do you also have the Eco sensor disabled??
I really wish TV manufacturers would overdrive their backlights or something when in these modes to compensate at the cost of increased power usage.

That might make them fail energy star requirements? It's probably more important for them to advertise how low-energy it is than making features more useful...

Well it's only an optional thing. I mean.. who actually cares about that shit in a TV?
Didn't Plasma consume more too? As does CRT.

It really wouldn't be anything compared to those, but for whatever reason it's not a priority for TV manufacturers. Maybe the backlights can't physically get that bright, maybe they never tried to crank them up, who knows. Most people probably don't really even notice motion blur and don't even use any of the impulse modes.

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
ECO mode is off and there's only ambient light of course.
I know that TV well now, except when it comes to that LED motion mode which I haven't touched much since because I couldn't stand the flickering in 'normal' use.
Now that I have found an alternative use for it, I need to squeeze out as much luminosity as possible from this mode.
Honestly it's almost there, but whatever I do destroys the colors;
. contrast enhancer -> burning bright areas
. gamma +2 -> off colors
. details enhancer -> gives a little boost as well but adds to the 'burning'
Several settings affect the percieved output luminosity, at a price...
I am sure though that some acceptable~balanced values exist, but I haven't found'em yet.

Sounds simply like you will have to choose a tradeoff. Or go back to not using LED motion mode and deal the the blur from that. :/
Honestly all the TVs that seemed to have improved on this in anyway this year are all 4k TVs *Sigh* (Or are inferior W8C series).
Vizio's implemented a comparable strobing feature. But they have too many problems of their own, and still dont' properly accept 4:4:4

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
But aren't the strobing modes all other brand models offer lag-heavy ?
Anyway I'm just looking for a middle ground, making the W6 useable in yoko for testing stuff, and also as an extra display for a bit of actual yoko gaming at times.
I should have said maybe I am looking for the 'least damaging' brightness-boosting settings. ^^
Oh and I kind of remember of external devices that could do that, boosting the input signal instead.
...or could I do that with a DVDO for instance ? Mmh...I'll give it a try tomorrow.

No, actually quite a few are at the point where the latency added is close to 0 or similar to the Sony's with only a few ms.
Some are laggy (Certain Samsungs for example)

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Okay so I gave adding a DVDO (vp50pro) in the chain in order to further boost the signal a try, and indeed it does work !
Using the output RGB gain, brightness and contrast controls is easier than messing with the W6's own settings.
The cost is about 6ms lag, and I'm unsure but the picture somehow looked a bit more fuzzy in movement, or it's just me lacking comparison points.
I'll study this further when I have some free time because I still need to find balanced settings.
That gave me other ideas as well, but next time...

Looking for a 42 inch 1080p set around the £400 mark, any recommendations or standouts from the 2015 models?
Had my eye on the below but no idea how it would cope with scaling 720p etc
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-hom ... 1-pdt.html
Am in the uk, many thanks!

I think none of these are IPS ones.
Isn't there some W82x variant, that was IPS ? Not sure....
The C models are Android based which means more input lag. Why would you want an IPS panel with three times the black level of a VA panel for TVs and movies ?

Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
the main plus are additional motionflow levels. Motionflow takes the panel's motion resolution from about 300-350 to full 1080 lines.
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
* the 600B even though not 'C' have higher lag too.
The 800B are awesome but avoid the 42" model, it's got the annoying passive 3D screendoor effect and lacks the best motionflow settings.
32W70*B
42W70*B
50W70*B
50W80*B
55W80*B
etc
**W95*B -> IIRC is IPS ?
They've all been discontinued so hurry and get one before all models forever go out of stock !

Anyone notice that when you go from plasma to lcd, horizontal scrolling is a bit weird ?
I tried with Zelda 3 with my panny then the sony W6 and another small LCD monitor and I have noticed some tearing with all my xrgb (1-2-3 and mini).
To be honest it is not tearing like we can see on PC but more subtle, may be closer to horizontal refreshing rate.
Anyway never seen this issue on any of my pana plasma.

Yeah be careful pretty much all 'B' models if any to be found are really old stock now.
Risks of a wrong title or description are high.

Definitely !cfx wrote:Before I do anything I will contact them and verify what they are actually selling.
EDIT: dunno if you're from the USA but the only 'B' model still officially featured over there is the W850B : http://www.sony.com/electronics/televis ... llery-item
I don't remember which panel it has exactly but I think a VA in any case. Still a damn great set.
And Canada still show the 700B : http://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/telev ... 00b-series

Best Buy in the US had both the 50W700B and the 55W700B, but I think both have been discontinued.
I remember buying it and then a little over a month later seeing it for $100-200 less, because of course I bought it too soon.

Tough, well there are always the used and refurbished on Amazon, found a few using keywords 'Sony W800B'...
I don't remember well, Fudoh made a post about that, IIRC those XR*** are only marketing BS, what's important is to have the actual advanced MF options available in the picture settings (clear or clear plus for instance) and the 50~55" models have them.
Dunno about 50Hz compatibility on the models sold in America, you'd have to ask the few Sony owners here.

it's the same, 50-100-200-400 vs. 60-120-240-480. It's just not to confuse buyers over here.... Our models all work fine with all possible 60Hz inputs. This particular 800B has "Motionflow XR400" rather than the XR480 of the US-spec TV. Does that mean it doesn't work or work well with 60Hz sources
Re: Sony W6 series LCD review - 2013's best gaming TV
Apparently the 800B used AUO AMV5 panels, while the 850B used Samsung SPVA-4 panels. The sub-pixel structure on the SPVA-4 panels reminded me of Sharp ASV panels without the sub-pixel domain dithering.

TRANSLATION FROM POLISH REQUIRED PRETTY PLEASE !!!
"Help me Obiwanshinobi, you're my only hope"
http://www.benchmark.pl/testy_i_recenzj ... -test.html
Google translate's a mess so i could be reading it wrong, but is it saying the delay is only 13.2ms ?
How do they get their measurements done ?
If it's true that would make the 32W700C/705C the exception in 2015. Wonder if the larger models are the same then.

There are other W7xxC reviews out there which list the input lag at ~35ms.
