Are you people gonna back the Retro VGS? (poll)

Post by atheistgod1999 »

I think it's a really dank video game console, and I hope everyone backs it so it can get funded. :D I'm gonna get a gold one with a couple games.

I'd back it if it were a Japanese project. Western developed consoles and games never have quite managed to fall in my taste.

Sorry, but you are not getting one. There zero chance its going to be funded in its current state.

I'm not sure how they expect to get $2 million for an Atari Jaguar with an FPGA inside. What will it even run really?

Using the same shell as a failed game console is indefensible!

IIRC, the shell was a necessity simply because it would cost too much to make a completely new one or something.

I mean, honestly the shell doesn't look all that bad. Maybe they can actually make the Jaguar a success finally? :P

Also: They support low res RGB out AND 1080p out of HDMI.
That's pretty great.

I think their heart is in the right place, but perhaps the time isn't. I can say I see where they are coming from and agree on many topics.

I wish them success. I won't be buying because i'm broke right now

Does "dank" mean good or bad?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I really don't understand who this console is for or how it's received any press. Is the idea really that people want more cartridges so badly? With all the manufacturing costs and waste that entails? Or is it some sort of vintage console emulator that's being pitched fruitlessly as a new console the way Ouya was?

Lashing out at critics (here it's Pat the NES Punk), the stuff with Kevtris... If this isn't done I'll eat my hat.

At least they aren't Phil Fish. I'd be pissed too if my campaign wasn't doing well.

34 "no" votes, 1 "yes" vote.

That's about how good this console will do.

I think the idea was , no patching = more pressure to get it as right as possible.

So much shit slips through these days just because they justify it as "Shippable"

If they're able to force developers to QA test their products enough that it doesn't need a patch... Then they're able to do that. Removing the ability to patch games does really not change that.

All it does is makes sure developers *can't* provide any updates after the game's release. It's just taking away possibilities, it's making an inferior product in an attempt to appeal to nostalgia.

It's the most stupid thing I've seen advertised in a long while.

Hell, the entire "cartridges are good" thing is equally stupid. They claim durability, but the oldest CDs I have are plenty playable. DRM free digital downloads will outlast either of them. There aren't any advantages to cartridges any longer (except for portable devices) and they've made no solid arguments for it.

They're appealing to nostalgia. It's all they do. They're not giving any reason why their product will be a good product, it'll just be like the systems you remembered. Except without developers. And the almost non-existent developer base will be dealing with limitations we've moved on from long ago for good reasons.

There is a case to be made for an open console for independent developers, but the Retro VGS is making the Ouya look fantastic in comparison.

I like the idea of a cart based system but only if updates could still be applied through Internet or USB. I don't know how much truth there is to it but I've heard Nintendo is considering this for the NX thanks to cheaper, larger flash storage being available. Probably just a rumor though.

>taking the "F" out of FPGA
>forgetting that even the original FC had to be revised for bugs

dese gais

The main idea behind this really seems to be ego & making a buck. Anybody can try to make retro-styled software for any of the tons of plug-in sticks, so this is just banking on collectors needing their attention focused by some new plastic bits. That is, of course, a sad, sad indictment of the retro gaming scene if that is supposedly the only way to market a new "retro" game.
