Re: Dark Souls- PS3, Xbox 360, PC
to be honest getting a +10 weapon is a pain in the ass before Sen's as you have to farm the leeches or slimes, I usually just suck it up and take a long time on Quelaag, then rush Sen's and buy the shards instead
a +3 drake sword can get him through this area and the next one too, a +0 starts sucking at this point though

Re: Dark Souls- PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Just to clarify, I said +10 for going into the next area...not that he retreats from Sen's and farms up his weapon to +10 now. As long as his weapon is modified to +6 and he has the weapon smithing box, he won't have to run back to Andrei.Bananamatic wrote:to be honest getting a +10 weapon is a pain in the ass before Sen's as you have to farm the leeches or slimes, I usually just suck it up and take a long time on Quelaag, then rush Sen's and buy the shards instead

As far as farming, keep in mind you can double up, doing co-op against quelaag while farming. I don't think it is a bad early game strat because you'll be getting humanity for doing co-op which well let you pump up discovery rate as well as learning the boss. If you already have a weapon at +5, at least getting it up a few levels and getting a massive pile of greens is very likely (which can be converted into a nearly endless pile of small shards.)
That said, once you have a certain item from Sen's, it is much easier to farm the leeches (the drop rate is actually really high, 1 large shard per minute if you are lucky plus the few scattered there anyway), so if you have a lot of weapons you want to upgrade, it might be worth going back...although don't forget frampt can break larger stones. I actually think it is much better farming for chunks than large shards since you have frampt and there's always that chance of a slab drop.

I just saw some dude standing in the Asylum, in the water. And going thru menus, while rolling a little bit here and there. What's the deal with this?

If you aren't familiar with the twitch plays idea, its another offshoot of "twitch plays pokemon" from last year.
Someone rigged an emulated Pokemon Red so that people would type commands into the twitch chat. I think there were always around 10,000 people posting/viewing at any time. Somehow amidst that chaos they managed to beat the game, it was quite the viral affair.
I highly doubt twitch chat playing dark souls will succeed in the slightest, or that they'll ever get out of the asylum. However, they have survived the first Asylum Demon encounter.. god knows how, wish I was watching when it happened.

I know no one seemed to care, or understand, but..
Twitch chat have reached Ornstein and Smough, one month later.
http://www.twitch.tv/twitchplaysdark
They've got a game freezing system in place in which people vote for the next input. It's pretty complicated, but a hardcore of around 500 people across timezones are always playing.
Here's some boss kills with the pauses removed:
Asylum Demon
Gaping Dragon

Jesus, when I last watched this, they were just doing fatrolls around the Asylum (just as ash said). That's a hell of a lot of progress!
I've only reached O&S myself...I gotta pick this back up! Oh, the horror and shame of being beaten by people pounding ROLL into a chat window
Of course, I guess this means that the lag was a basically insurmountable problem.

The insurmountable problem was the game being played in real time back in the asylum. I think the 3 days or so they spent in the same pool pretty much proves that these Twitch Plays experiments are impossible for an action game.Ed Oscuro wrote:Oh, the horror and shame of being beaten by people pounding ROLL into a chat window

Re: Dark Souls- PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Well, that's actually two problems. It's not clear which is bigger - having too many people throwing random inputs (without the voting system) or the simple lag introduced by playing it online. The Twitch Plays system hit both problems straight away, making it much harder than even the guy using voice commands to play the game (which was effectively just latency, and similar to playing the game without the random inputs).Squire Grooktook wrote:The insurmountable problem was the game being played in real time back in the asylum. What's still unsettled (for me) is how high input lag can be pushed before enemy behavior becomes unpredictable.

Re: Dark Souls- PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Both problems are terrible, but I'd say the input delay is the worst, and these very experiments prove or strongly evidecne that. The "Voice Souls" guy is not playing via a stream which is already a few seconds behind, and actually shouting "roll" is also probably a number of frames faster than typing "roll" and hitting enter. Even if there was just one person playing, I imagine it would be nearly impossible. The fact that rpg's and "turn based Souls" have worked with the untold voices but the Asylum alone was too much for real time gameplay is proof to me that action games just don't work with these kinds of experiments.
So Twitch Plays Touhou never.

The ending was hilarious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTX0HFeYPHU
Skip to 1:28. After Gwyn they spammed 'chaos' in the chat until the game switched back to anarchy (instant input) mode. The Chosen undead with a sack on his head rolled around, chugged 15 estus in a row, then rolled right out the door for the dark ending.
The backing music is submitted to the channel, and in this wonderful moment somebody had suggested some godawful dubstep. The noise served as victory fanfare as Chosen Undead walked out, it was so very internet. Then the dubstep continued over half the ending theme...
I for one welcome our new Wub Overlord.

I don't like this list, or agree with it (but I'm much more of a retro gamer type).
But no. 1 really surprised me. Glad to see it, rather than GTA V or The Last of Us.
I don't know what my favorite game is. It's the best game, since at least 2005. But best EVER?

EDIT: There's some odd entries on here. R-Type Final?! That's an ODD choice, for a shmup. Seeing as how, I don't think anyone in this forum of shmup enthusiasts would put it anywhere in our top 10s.
No Chrono Trigger, but Destiny and Splatoon? Weird.
Splatoon is a very neat MP game. But...really?
FEZ?!

Re: Dark Souls- PS3, Xbox 360, PC
I can see Splatoon being on, it's a pretty damn good third person multiplayer shooter. I'd pick it over most of its competitors in that department.
Sounds like a modern gamer casual list made by modern gamer casuals. EGM gave R-Type Final better reviews than Gradius V back then so I'm not surprised. Casuals probably love grinding for ships. Perhaps just as important (perhaps more?) it was an easily available shmup during the ps2 era. Not many of those. If you were a console gamer who liked shmups you were kinda fucked from ps2 onward.
Only other option was the 360 but I doubt any semi-serious fans who are console only would even know enough about import titles to be aware that Cave exists.

Dark Souls has been at, or near the top of a few 'best of' lists lately. It's nowhere near my favorite game (it's in my top 25), but at least I'd take it over anything else that you always see topping lists like these (eg. Mario/Zelda/Metroid/FF/TLOU/GTA/fucking Uncharted)

Re: Dark Souls- PS3, Xbox 360, PC
What I find weird is how many recently released games are there. If I was compiling such a list I would exclude all games released in the last 5 years to avoid the bias of immediacy. Let's see what really lasts.
I do think Dark Souls deserves to be there, though. Of course no one game is the best game ever for everyone, but as you say if you had to pick you could do a hell of a lot worse. Dark Souls feels like a great achievement for the medium. It's not just that it successfully made the point that difficulty can be important good and communicated it to a pretty mainstream audience - its approach to storytelling and how it ties in with the gameplay makes the case for the medium being able to offer really unique experiences. The fact that it can give in-game narrative meaning to otherwise purely "gameplay" considerations such as enemy placements abilities is something I'd like to see more people do. It gives a level of depth to the world and narrative that "the player" (rather than the character they're playing) can explore. The only problem is that is requires competent designers!
But to be honest, now that I think about it, I don't really know how unique Dark souls is in this regard, so if anyone knows firstly what I'm on about and secondly if there are other games beyond the From canon that use comparable techniques then please share.

I'm the kind to get all mushy over story stuff, and Dark Souls ending was a magical, beautiful experience for me.
The rest of the game is fun as fuck too. Definitely one of my favorites and a game I could replay again and again.

Re: Dark Souls Random Build Challenge!
Hey Undeads, Fancy a little communal challenge?
https://www.mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/
Click 'Random' at the top right and it'll completely randomise a build for you. It's usually something ridiculous.
Is anyone up for doing this around the same time as me?
Suggested rules:
-Primary objective is making the build you roll, after that play and finish the game as you see fit.
-You should probably finish the game though.
-Do whatever necessary to get the items as soon as possible; skip areas, kill NPCs, use masterkey etc.
-If the stats rolled are inadequate for using the equipment given to you, then increase stats as required.
- Shall we say SL100? 80?
You could play another souls game instead, too.
Please suggest any changes or improvements to the idea.
Here's an alternate generator too which seems simpler and doesn't include stats, we could use that if preferred.

regardless, I'm gonna try running this monstrosity of a build. Probably won't use all the weapons simultaneously.

Is Prepare to Die for consoles all the content, or is it still incomplete without some DLC?
Give the original Gothic a try, just keep in mind it's über-glitchy and save frequently in various slots (or else you might break the game irreversibly).Weak Boson wrote:But to be honest, now that I think about it, I don't really know how unique Dark souls is in this regard, so if anyone knows firstly what I'm on about and secondly if there are other games beyond the From canon that use comparable techniques then please share.

Won't be able to justify buying another Souls game soon, though. I don't in fact feel attracted to this kind of settings these days (whereas I used to be terribly into it only a couple of years ago).

Well if you wanted to play along I don't see why you can't make little adjustments.. like some lighter gear, just to keep it fun.ryu wrote:I rolled a few times, and only got fat roll builds. Ew!

In any case, I currently don't have the time to play Dark Souls anyways. I've just played the game a lot up until a few weeks ago. Only rolled to see what kinda stuff that randomizer comes up with.
