Basically yes, you can load an alternative dashboard which allows you to launch any executable disregarding regioncode/signing

OK, because I had a guy install one, and he doesn't know much about JP games.
As in, he has no region locked games, to try on it.

Is there any kind of program that is specifically needed?

And will I be able to rip my JP discs to the HD?

I'm not an expert at this, i RGH'd my xbox 2 months ago and got it running games.

What i did

1) Install Dashlaunch
2) Install alternative dashboard

You can install dashlaunch through the retail dash - you can find guides for this. As alternative dashboard i use Aurora but it does not offer a tool to rip disks, i suggest you try freestyle dash, this can rip disks!
