Absolutely Anything

Some powerful aliens imbue a random human (Simon Pegg) with cosmic magical power (like, say, Mr. Mxyzptlk in comic books) because they want to decide, from the observation of how he uses it, whether Earth is to be destroyed or inducted into their exclusive group.
Given that nobody on Earth knows about this test, the story focuses on the protagonist, his attractive neighbour (Kate Beckinsale) and her crazy ex.

A good comedy, silly when it's harmless but very effective, almost serious, when it touches important subjects and character development.

Actually is wasn't as much as you'd expect. I was doing stuff while I had it on the TV so can't really comment on the quality though.

I don't find off-screen narration in Taxi Driver any more welcome than in like 99,(9)% of fiction movies. Some can't stand retrospectives in films, I have a similar problem with off-screen narration.

Chinatown actually happens to be a proper film equivalent of first person narration. Even when Gittes is telling a joke, seemingly unaware of the customer's presence in office, we can't be sure whether he really doesn't know or deliberately ignores bystanders. Therefore the film's manner of following one person snooping around remains preserved.

All that smoking and drinking in almost every scene must be tough for the viewers who try to quit, though.

I watched Infiniti or whatever its called. Netflix recommended it. Took me 3 days to get to a point where I've just given up trying to watch it. One man in a space station with people made crazy by blood. Just when you think they're dead and too crazy to be characters, they keep right on living. I kinda think there's going to be a twist at the end, but with 1 character vs madmen with guns just gets very old.

I didn't mind the narration in Taxi Driver (though my initial reaction was "narration? That's a little cheesy..."); it grew on me. I think because of the moody saxaphone music, the dark night setting, and the lowlife main character, it was consciously calling to mind a noir detective yarn.

I hadn't thought of Chinatown as first-person before, but now that I think of it I don't recall any scene where Gittes is not onscreen or observing something. It's great that we are never "ahead" of Jack when it comes to solving the mystery; every relevant clue is discovered as he discovers it. Skillfully done, Polanski, ha ha.

Saw 7 chinese brothers at facets cinematheque and while it was somewhat boring by even mumblecore standards, it still had its memorable parts. Love the surprise appearances by Alex Ross Perry and Bob Byington.

Watched a bit of 'what we do in the shadows' but fell asleep since it was early AM and I was exhausted. Going to try and finish it tonight.

The comment was funny because Jason Statham is possibly the worst actor in the history of the art, and you were comparing Skrien to him as if he even had a qualifying grade. Skrien, from what I've seen, actually has some capacity.

Cruise was never a good actor. He had a standard course in naturalism, but his earliest years were based around a repertoire of serviceable egoism (silver screen masturbation) which included looking good, looking good and looking good. Acting didn't really come into it.

In recent years? Well, he's a bit like Richard Dreyfuss, as an example. As much as I love Jaws and enjoyed his character, he was literally Spielberg's chum and his performance showed it. Same with Close Encounters. But by the time these guys have had enough roles, they start to improve, which is normal. Dreyfuss was a little more ingratiated by the time he did What About Bob or Holland's Opus (nothing special, but he had a better grasp).

Cruise is the same. He has more range, doesn't only rely on egoism, and can handle his role. Is he good? No. Still just serviceable. But better than Statham? By light years.

I agree that he isn't really all that great but I love lock stock and two smoking barrels & snatch too much to dislike statham..he kind of fits those roles extremely well. also too bad guy ritchie's new film has been getting a little bit of flack for being mediocre. unfortunately still haven't seen it myself.

Speaking in passing of Statham, has anyone seen the original Mechanic with Charles Bronson? I've been thinking of picking up the Twilight Time bluray, along with the newly-released 10 to Midnight for my action-exploitation sleaze, but they are a little pricey.

Thank God smaller labels like this and Retrovision at least have the courtesy to release movies using the poster as the cover instead of the same fucking boring "heads in a background" template that must have been proven by marketers somewhere as the most effective DVD cover for everything, ever.

Charles Bronson is also a fun point of comparison because one of the most frequent complaints about him is that he never really "acted"* but I love him all the same.

*not true if you've seen Hard Times and Once Upon a Time in the West

Those two movies are the only ones where he's just about passable because essentially he's tasked as playing himself.

He's a working class East End boy and he made good - I got nothing against someone getting lucky. But the man can't act for shit, he's absolutely hopeless, and he'd probably be the first to admit it.

Blade Runner
I forgot how awful the narration was, but for watching all versions since I own the 30th blu-ray set, I watched the original US release. Narration takes away from a good bit of the really nice music that was in the movie and at times doesn't feel so great. It works somewhat but, overall the final cut really is the best to watch. Still an interesting version of the movie for sure.
