Hamada Mari, Japan's heavy metal queen.

More.
Does anybody know, which artists do provide the Bubblegum Crisis vocal tracks?

This gets the 'best new thread on SHMUPS forum for a while award'.
Unfortunately it's not something I know much about. hopefully someone like Trap15 (perhaps?) or even better HZT will weigh in.
Bubblegum Crisis tracks were performed in house by the vocal talent I believe. Check out the Hurricane Live videos for some really awesome live performances. While I'm not a massive fan of BGC, the setting, art direction and in particular the music are absolutely flawless.
Couple of heavy 80's Japanese bands to peruse;
Papaya Paranoia
Zelda
Mensu
Tom*Cat

Princess Princess was a cool female rock band from the 80s and early 90s

How about some Pink Sapphire?

I was going to mention Mari Hamada but that's been done I see
Cool recommendations so far, found some Tom*Cat and Princess Princess on youtube and it was good.
I thought I'd be able to recommend at least a few as well but thinking about it, I've mostly heard 80s jp rock from anime and well, seems to be either mostly in-house stuff or cases where the singer does all sorts of genres and it just happened to be rock that time.
Most stuff I have or know of from that time is either some kind of funk, fusion or pop.
I do quite like Siam Shade but that's a newer band, early-mid 90s or so.

Loudness.
Lots of thrash and death-metal from the later 80s to early 90s too.

For metal, I'm partial to Anthem. The early albums with Sakamoto on vocals are excellent, but Morikawa-era Anthem has way more tracks produced by Chris Tsangarides (who collaborated with Judas Priest on Painkiller around this point), so I'm excited to listen to Hunting Time once I get that.

Not sure if qualifies...my favourite post-punk/gothic rock band, Kokushoku Elegy.

If we're including 80's goth, everyone should check out G-Schmitt too.
Getting a really awesome list of stuff to check out from this thread.

really liking this, reminds of some of the visual kei i used to listen to back in the day. the siouxsie comparison is obvious. would love to hear the full comp album (esoderic mania) if youve got it, hehe. the many music blogs have all failed me. [edit: nm, seem to have found it!]
Re: Good 80s Japanese Rock and Metal?
I love raw thrash and death metal. Not a whole lot that I know of from Japan, but I found Jurassic Jade to be acceptable thrash.MX7 wrote:I would like to know more.
And Abigail. Intercourse and Lust. A little later than the early 90s, but raw and primitive enough that you might not notice or care.
Similarly: Sabbat. The Dwelling. I'm going to have to give this one a good relisten.

I know this is veering well away from the original request.

Rosenfeld. But make sure to check them out in private. There's some stuff in their appearance that some people are sensitive to and that might get you in trouble.

just popping in to say those kokushoku elegy tracks are still going strong. did a listening party with friends the other night, they liked it a lot. they sound a little like the french band corpus delicti to me. i wonder if the actual cd has lyrics, as I can only make out some of them.
i'll have to check out some of the other recommendations in here too.

Haha! I liked them too. My Japanese neighbor and I were actually reminiscing about that group a few weeks ago. Whenever I hear the song Diamonds it totally brings back memories from a particular trip to Japan.ELabit wrote:Princess Princess was a cool female rock band from the 80s and early 90s

X Japan is a staple, for sure. One of the best.
Also a fan of Cocobat and Sobut who both are unfortunately a bit hard to find without importing CDs. Though they lean a bit more towards punk than rock or metal.
