I know it seems too easy and obvious to rag on PC Gamer for knowing nothing about a less than mainstream genre, but fuck, what a poorly written news piece.

He's a freelancer, but this is another good example of why farming out your news section to freelancers who get paid by the article maybe isn't a great idea.

What about the comments, then? All about complaining about japanese pedo artwork and crap like that, instead of rejoicing the entrance of the big guys of the Bullet Hell genre on PC after they are done with arcades.

Degica should REALLY deserve a Publisher Of The Year 2015 or something, my god.

Degica you guys should get with Cave and make an official arcade control panel for this, with seimitsu stick and 4 buttons. Price doesn't matter.

Yep. That site is a fucking joke.
I don't play shoot-em-ups myself, but I did very much enjoy Shoot Em Up, a silly, fun movie starring Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti. It's not relevant to the videogame genre in any way whatsoever, but it's a solid choice if you're looking for something to watch this weekend.
HURR HURR. That's real funny, guy! he must want to write for Vice, the new shittier hipster Vice, but even they wouldn't let him in.

I'm pleased about this news, trying to manage expectations..

uh oh..

He's actually stealth-promoting the debut of his unlicensed Raiden novellas, which also happen to release on those same days.

Well. I didn't think we were going to announce this quite so quickly, but here we are. Shin is one of my co-workers, and this announcement is for real. CAVE is developing a game for PC. Without giving away too much, it's a real arcade game and a fan favorite, so you can put your fears of bad mobile ports or freemium games aside. You can expect the same level of high quality seen in our other shooters like Crimzon Clover and XIIZeal.

Sorry for the website - web design is not one of my strong points -_-.

Oh happy day!

I actually frequent pcgamer and first heard about this through them. Article is a cringe worthy yet telling example of how the greater audience of steam and pcgamer will form a first impression. Make no mistake, this is a first contact for many and it isn't going to be pretty.

I'm going to enjoy seeing the user content in the games hub for this release. Probably my favourite part of steam.

Honestly I doubt this is going to have a real impact on the mainstream view of shmups, but still we'll see what happens, and in any case people here will at least enjoy it.

Didn't think I would see the day this would happen.

While I applaud your work Blackbird and will definitely double dip on Mushihimesama, once the games start coming out please send more review keys to spread the word for the love of god! From all the games that Degica has put out, only 3 have enough reviews to get a metascore (good thing CCWI is one of them, at a respectable 85). I know that people on this forum scoff at that idea, but the bottom line is that in order to make this genre stay alive, it needs to sell. Plain and simple. I don't care if it takes people like pewdiepew to get the word out. I just wanna see all these games do well. A couple ideas: let us buy the OSTs via Steam, make cool backgrounds to incentive the sale of trading cards, or try to get some TF2 or Dota 2 skins as pre-order bonuses. Whatever that can help catch the attention of willing PC wallets to part with their money.

Believe me, I send out a lot of review keys! The problem is, you can't just force journalists to be interested and to write articles - they're doing a job too, and they only cover stories that are going to bring traffic to the website and be newsworthy. We of course want our games to succeed, not only so our devs can keep making games, but also because we want to stay in business =P. If you want to help, positive word of mouth is literally the strongest thing there is - it's what made Crimzon Clover successful. For niche games like shmups, the biggest hurdle is literally making people aware that the games actually exist and are worth playing.

  • The upside is that one commercial Japanese developer after another is giving Steam a shot in order to gain access to a more-or-less global market.
  • The downside is that it is unlikely that their bread-and-butter domestic market is unlikely to accept Steam/PC as the primary delivery platform - so the post-Xbox 360 platform of choice has yet to be determined.

I think things are changing for the better, just very slowly. They're always gonna be niche, but maybe now they'll just be regular niche instead of insanely stupidly niche.

And considering the PC market is plenty of times bigger than the current PS4/XBONE install base, I say there is a higher chance of sales and lower cost of entry.

Good news in the end, even if I don't have a monitor to rotate but who cares really....

Eh, how much does the Japanese market even matter anymore? Real question. It's not expanding, and it's veered so hard into mobile territory that I don't think it particularly matters for re-releases like this anymore.

I think the potential to reach a new market, especially one where there's such a buzz from the hardcore community, would be more interesting. The whole "hardest game ever" piece can only be a good thing.

Do we have any indication as to how these games will be brought over? Sounds like real ports, but any assurance it's not just a repackaging of MAME would be cool.

I haven't played the MAME version, so I don't know what that's like, but it seems like a "real" port to me, compared to what I've played of the game in the past. When we get closer to the actual launch, I'll do the usual preview event so you can have a chance to evaluate the performance of the game, too.
