I've never bothered with RGB because I don't really like console modding. However, I've recently learned about the wonderful world of Extron, and have come across some interesting products.
They make a few products capable of converting signals to RBG. My question is, what is the downside to this? Will there input lag as due to a possible output delay from converting the video signal?
They also make composite to s-video converters. Same question?
Cheers,
Carthik

which units are you thinking of ? Got a link ?They make a few products capable of converting signals to RBG
In general you don't gain any quality by converting to RGB. It's usually just about simplifying integration. Converting composite to RGB or component requires a good comb filter and there are only very few machines out there that do it well.

Re: Extron RGB Converters?
Here are a couple, there seem to be a few more.
Composite to S-Video:
http://www.extron.com/product/product.a ... vyc100&s=4
Component to RGB:
http://www.extron.com/product/product.a ... cvc300&s=4
These are just some of there simple stand alone units. They have switches that do similar things too.

Re: Extron RGB Converters?
The 2nd one is a transcoder unit. That's a losless conversion between YUV and RGB.
If a composite to s-video converter will help you depends on the quality of the comb filter in your display. It's a pretty safe guess to say that it won't help you.

Re: Extron RGB Converters?
Yeah, it's pointless to convert anything to RGB, because you're not getting improved quality or anything. What matters is the signal you start with, so that means you have to mod consoles that don't normally have RGB, or just use their s-video output. Most consoles have RGB or Component out though. The only system released after 1989 without RGB or YPbPr was the N64 (US version) as far as I know.

Re: Extron RGB Converters?
I guess I'll be sticking to non RGB signals. Thanks for the help.
The Composite to S-Video does interest me though (NES).
For reference I use a Commodore 1702 (S-Video) and am very happy with the picture quality and audio. The only thing that annoys me is the limiting video adjustments.
I will eventually be picking up a BVM or PVM to solve that issue. Only reason I'm considering PVM is because I don't think BVMs come in 13". I'm not looking forward to having to setup up additional speakers though (I doubt the 13" PVM's tiny speaker can compare to 1702's large one).

almost all BVM models are available in 14" and 20".will eventually be picking up a BVM or PVM to solve that issue. Only reason I'm considering PVM is because I don't think BVMs come in 13".
When going BVM remember that these don't have composite decoders by default. You need an extra add-in cart to add composite. If you want composite AND s-video functionality you have to pay attention to what board you get.

Re: Extron RGB Converters?
Seems bizarre to buy such a nice monitor only to feed it composite. That's like buying a nice big state-of-the-art HDTV and feeding it standard definition.
