Cable query - AV Famicom + NESRGB mod + Framemeister

Post by bugsypal »

Hi all, first time poster here.

I have just finished installing the NESRGB mod on my AV Famicom, but it is not quite working correctly yet. Despite experimenting with the sync settings on my Framemeister, I am unable to get a completely stable image.

My first thought is that the problem lies in the SCART cable I'm trying to use - it is a PAL Gamecube cable (I understand this is the right one to use), but upon opening the plug I noticed there was a 220uF capacitor on each of the RGB input pins and a 75 ohm resistor between the composite input and ground pins.

Would I be correct in assuming that these components should be removed and the leads soldered in directly? I just want to be sure of what I am doing before I start butchering the thing!

Most grateful for any advice offered.

The NESRGB board already has those components (caps) onboard, so you can (and should) use a "plain" RGB cable to connect the NESRGB to the Mini.

Thanks Fudoh.

So I removed the components and soldered the leads directly in ... but unfortunately it hasn't solved the problem. While the image clarity is excellent, I still haven't been able to eliminate the jumpiness.

I'm now thinking the problem might lie elsewhere. My other consoles (Super Famicom and PC Engine) are working just fine via RGB, so I can presumably rule out a problem with the Framemeister itself. Can anyone offer any other suggestions as to where the problem might lie?

Two final points that may be relevant: I am using a EuroSCART to Framemeister XRGB mini passive adapter cable (supplied by Retro Gaming Cables) and the Framemeister is running firmware v2.00A.

Again, most grateful for any advice offered.

I don't use a NESRGB myself, but I think you got multiple choices on how to configure the sync output from the NESRGB board. You should be able to solve this by using a different type of sync output, e.g. CSYNC instead of composite video (or vice versa). Check the NESRGB thread and you'll find plenty of information on this.

Thanks again Fudoh - I looked further into this and you are absolutely correct. I was using composite video for sync earlier, but there is also an option to use CSYNC. Switching over to this output produced an absolutely rock-solid image.

Everything's now working perfectly - thanks for your help!
