It's a lot less creepy with the actual sound instead of the "spooky music" played over a Betty Boop cartoon
Bimbo's Initiation

It's pretty funny and entertaining, like all those Fleischer-era black-and-white cartoons.

That's not even the spookiest betty boop; my money is on the bizarre background images used in the jazzy Cab Calloway shorts:

Minnie the Moocher

Snow White

Also, all the Fleischer-era cartoons were shorts intended for adults at the theater. Do you really think all the sex and alcohol was designed for kids? Adults just had better taste back then. 8)

Those classic Fleischer cartoons are good stuff. I also like the earlier Popeye cartoons quite a bit. No surprise that they were aimed at adults. The first one actually had a topless Betty Boop (covered by a Lei).

I agree on this for the most part, but some of the later Fleischer shorts and the Famous Studios shorts were dumbed down a bit compared to the earlier ones. The third Popeye color feature, Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp is a good example of this.

Betty Boop, M.D.

Pretty manic stuff throughout, but wait for the ending. Trippy shit.

Speaking of animation from the 30's, just recently discovered the rather amazing Le Roman de Renard--a 1930 stop motion film of the Renard the Fox stories which date back to medieval times. Clearly the direct inspiration for Fantastic Mr. Fox; feels incredibly modern to me.

That sounds as redundant as The River Avon.

It's the English version for people who don't know that renard = fox. I could have said 'tale of the fox' or 'romance of the fox' (actual literal translation) and no one would know what the hell I was talking about. The renard folktales are pretty much unknown to most Americans, or they only exist dimly at some subconscious level. Hence the redundancy.
