Takumi is/was a promising company which peaked with GW2 and Mars Matrix. Night Raid and GWG remind me of when Raizing was on the outs and produced 1944 The Loop Master. If they can rebound and produce a worthy sequel to MM (and show some renewed effort after their lackluster effort with GWG's presentation), then they will be a more steady company IMHO. Right now, unless they start becoming more active they are null as far as I am concerned.
I think they delivered on their promise with those games. Anything else is bonus. Steadiness is not for disturbed genius such as Takumi's.

The 194x series, appropriately enough, takes World War II as its setting. No aliens or space ships here, just "actual" antique weapons and ships.
Haha, what the fuck...I wonder if he even got to the last boss.

1 or 2 of his were fine (Gradius V) the rest were not so fine (SNS 2).

So the guy likes giga wing, not a crime and he backs up his selections with some knowledge and enthusiasm, and a bit of controversy is never a bad thing.
Agreed. Also the list seems to acknowledge multiple games of a series in one entry rather than, say, giving each DP game a slot. And really for the people that are going to be reading that list, it makes it more interesting and gives it some variety.

OK, I should go easier on the guys too..

But then should this be top ten best, or groundbreakers?

i.e. IMO GigaWing introduced the reflect barrier and was the groundbreaker, but Mars Matrix refined it and became the better game. DonPachi set the stage, but DDP took it further and became the better game.

"The shmup genre is one of the few left alive (barely) that still manages to hold on to its oldschool gameplay and difficulty while still making steady advancement. Help out us shmup junkies by buying at least one if you ever see one! We have to keep the dream alive. If the shmup dies, we all die a little inside."

Now that's rad. You have to give them credit for that.

I think this is an excellent list!

There's many things I don't agree with (e.g. no 16-Bit console shmup like Compiles, TF, GoT, etc), but a lot of it is just a matter of opinion, of course.

And it's always good to choose something controvertial as number 1.

Hopefully it will serve to educate some of the idiots at gamefaqs.

I agree. I thought it was a very admirable statement myself. Wow, an "admirable statement" coming from Gamefaqs? :P

I dunno about "barely" alive though. The past few years have seen a small surge in new titles.

My top shooter at the moment is DDP DOJ.

Posting stuff like that on the internet is just asking for trouble.. you'd get less crap for saying you were a terrorist

What an oddball list. There are maybe two games (Ikaruga and SnS2) that would be in my personal top 10. Of course, I'm drawn more towards earlier games like Recca and Space Invaders.

Strikers 1945 doesn't belong on any list. Zero Gunner 2 is easily Psikyo's finest moment.

But hey, at least the list has caused debate, rather than an all-out flamewar. It'll be interesting to compare this list to the upcoming annual top 25 ranking.

Gigawing is so underrated... and it has a couple of my favorite all-time shmup moments in there: Level 5 (trippy), and the last boss (the bio-mech station, not the "true last boss"). I like Gigawing better than Gigawing 2 (except for the soundtrack) as well, so at least in my eyes he has picked the right Gigawing for the list (Haven't played Generations...). R-Type Delta (THE best r-type, and one of the best shmups ever) and Raiden (give me Raiden DX over the original, but they all just improved on the original so it makes sense), are also on there, and so they deserve to be.

Mad props to him. I believe it's called an "opinion" :P Also, must you have played every single shooter to be allowed to form a top ten? Nup... you can tell he's got passion, in any case. Written by anyone on this board? :P

The only problem I have with top ten anythings in general is that my mind tends to change according to my mood. Don't think I could honestly put together a definitive list of my fave's. I know DDP and Giga Wing 2 would be in the top five, and that's about it. Fair play to the guy though, and amybe it'll spread the word a little amongst less knowledgable gamers.

Wow!
This list is pretty well chosen. Offcourse I don't agree with every game, but I like that they came up with their own opinions, instead of just listing games because they are famous. I like seeing Giga Wing on #1 :)
Which I think is a great shmup and it's one of my alltime favorites, I think this game is pretty underrated by many.

Because some of you disagree with their games, does not mean that they know nothing about shmups. Yeah maybe they don't know every shmup, but honestly who knows EVERY shmups and have it played properly.

Besides I'd agree with many games on there:

Gradius V and Giga Wing would be in my top 5 for sure. Also R-Type Delta is ace. Just missing DoDonPachi, but if they like DonPachi more.

I was surprised that this list was made so well and obviously with some insight in the gameplay. Not like some GW2 reviews I've read reccently... :P

The list should have been the 5 aforementioned, GW2, MM, Battle Garegga and a couple horis to keep some folks from crying.
G. Darius, Border Down, Salamander 2...are they not excellent?

Good list... reasonably well thought out and some real winners there. My top 10 would be very different (and include more older games) , but then again, everyone's top 10 shmups would likely be different. His is no worse than mine.

This is a very confusing exchange. Kiken might be saying: Strikers II is the best Psikyo game. Or he might be saying: The 10th game on the list is Strikers II.

I agree with Kiken, if he's saying the latter.

Look again at the original list. HE'S NOT TALKING ABOUT STRIKERS 1945 I! He's talking about the US PS1 release, Strikers 1945. But that's Strikers II.

So bVork's original comment misses its target. (Unless bVork is also talking about Strikers II.)

Some really dumb decisions particularly favoring earlier games in series for no reason. Nobody likes Donpachi more than Dodonpachi. NO ONE. It wasn't as polished of a game. And Raiden over Raiden 2? Gigawing over Gigawing 2? What gives?

The whole thing is one guy,s opinion. I like it when people have bizare top pics If he would have picked something for number one like Radiant Silvergun it would be a little disapointing becuase thats what everyone picks this makes it more interesting. Besides everyones entitled to there own opinion.

Isn't Raiden DX the obvious choice? Or are we not distinguishing 2 and DX for these purposes?
Frogacuda wrote:Gigawing over Gigawing 2? What gives?
I still like the look of GigaWing better than GigaWing 2. Gameplay-wise they are both seriously challenging for me at this time-- maybe in a few years I'll be a better judge. Since GigaWing was more innovative, I will in fact be putting it higher on my top 25 list. Unless, of course, someone here can convince me to do otherwise.
