Splatoon!

Post by cave hermit »

Well it's been a week since the game hit, and I think it's high time a thread opened up on it here!

I bought this on launch, and lack of content for the time being aside, this is some of the most fun I've had with a shooter in a long time! Really, it's some of the most fun I've had with a AAA game in a very long time!

When I first heard about this game being announced, I was pretty cynical and expected the worst, but I'm very happy to have been proven wrong!

All the color, the atmosphere, the charm, it just all makes me feel so warm and good inside, even when I lose (fittingly enough the original idea for splatoon came from a member of the Animal Crossing development team; Animal Crossing is another one of my all-time favorite feel good games)!

Then of course there's the genius arena shooter, tactical positioning, dynamic squid cover gameplay...

Anyway enough gushing, for those of you who also have it, what do you think of Splatoon so far?

I'm still waiting on mine to arrive. Looks sort of like a Dreamcast game (in terms of style).

I hear they have been adding stuff to it, as of late. Any of it good?

Believe it or not they just added a new weapon 2 hours ago!

They just added a paintbrush, which mainly functions as a melee weapon akin to a sword: you can lay down a very thin trail of paint while moving faster than you normally walk, or you can swing it back and forth to rapidly spray ink over a decently sized area in front of you.

I think it's pretty cool, and I'm pretty good with it already although I can't say how competitively viable it is given it has only been 2 hours (doesn't stop people on miiverse from claiming it sucks already though!)

They also added a NES zapper styled reskin of the default weapon (not that exciting, but cool nontheless)

And they added a map (basically a warehouse maze of boxes, which I think is pretty good).

Of course there's still more to come!

Interesting. It seems to be popular, so I hope the bulk it up.
I heard complaints that it was a bit bare bones, on release.

Add me up. I'm Evil_Ash_Xero.

Also the music is just... amazing. Not in the conventional sense though.

Like this song, which kinda sounds like Jabba the Hutt suffering from painful constipation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdDQoEA ... mubfZvM76e

I just can't help "singing" along to it every time it plays in a match :P

Not a fan of the controls. Would have been great with wiimote support, though.

I did buy the Splatoon girl amiibo. One of my friend's little brother is working towards a full collection of amiibos and has quite a few rare ones, including the triple pack exclusive squid amiibo.

He was kind enough to let me borrow it for the week so I could get the unlockables on it.

Regarding the motion controls, at first I was pretty uncomfortable but after awhile it felt very natural, offering the precision of mouse control in a way.

Looks like it has some odd code where you can play with a wiimote strapped to a controller?

Started playing yesterday, beat the single player campaign today. Then jumped online and was the best player in my first 3 matches and in the majority of matches I've played I've been one of the top scorers, idk if I'm just good at this game or I keep running into people who aren't. Did have a game where the other team definitely knew what was up, using the ink to set up ambushes, actually doing teamwork. That's the kind of stuff that makes it fun.

I don't mind the random stage selection but I really don't like the "two stages that rotate every four hours" system, and I would reaaaaally appreciate if I could change my weapon from the lobby.

Really great game.

This thread also needs this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwERpeBVJa8

Level 20
Rank A+ with 99 points
Confident in equips, lots of money
All singleplayer-content collected (except amiibos)
High score in squid-jump

What's next?
It's pretty embarrassing that your flagship shooter runs out of end-game content this fast.
Been loving the game, it's great fun and I can't wait for the new content to roll in.
I just can't understand why do they limit the ranking points at max rank.

I'm incredibly disappointed with Nintendo that this has been hyped up for so long and ends up shipping in such a stripped-down fashion. Not only that but the wretched amiibo paywall for extras (to go with the barebones single player to boot!). Local multiplayer is a different mode as well, seems a bit nuts to not offer the online modes offline.

I was hoping it'd give me a pre-Xenoblade X reason to pick up a WiiU but definitely not if half the game is yet to come :(

The Wii U's not a bad buy. Just don't expect it to be supported for much longer.

I caved and bought this thing. So far got up to level 20, B rank and a full set of gear. The game is fun but of course far from perfect; the lack of content and button layout are annoying (You have to press 2-3 buttons to do a 180 and it's easy to fuck it up, and L trigger/L stick button does absolutely nothing).

If you're holding out on buying it, I suggest waiting at least until August because that's supposedly when a big update patch is being released to add team ranked mode and some other stuff. Right now, the only ranked mode is random teams.

Also, if they release any paid DLC, it's going to cause an uproar, as the base game was expensive and lacking in content enough as it is .. (Although let's face it, I'd end up buying it anyway)

Just my personal theory - I think Nintendo probably rushed the title a little in order to launch it at the ideal "start of summer" release window. Don't get me wrong, I really like Splatoon a lot and I think it's a fine game, but it's pretty reasonable to expect that Nintendo will make some missteps given that this is their first time exploring the genre.

In Europe it was released at a budget price point. You can get it for 25 GBP, whereas full-priced Wii U games are up to 40 GBP.

And that's not counting Shovel Knight and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse ports. Those are top notch, as well.

I wonder how Star Fox is going to turn out? Please go back to Star Fox 64 greatness.

Welp, Saturday Splatfest has been postponed for awhile:

Apparently there were a couple matchmaking glitches during the Japanese splatfest that caused extremely long waiting times, so Nintendo is trying to iron out those bugs first.

I don't even know what SplatFest is yet. I've just been playing Turf War, and the single player mode.

Anyone care to explain it to me?

So basically from time to time Nintendo will host splatfests:
Just before a splatfest a booth appears in the plaza letting you vote for one of two choices (cats or dogs, rice or bread, etc.). After you vote you're placed on a splatfest team representing your choice, and you're given a promotional t-shirt to wear featuring the option you voted for (only lasts for the duration of the splatfest though). Once the splatfest starts, you basically play turf wars like normal in standard matches, but now your paint coverage and victories go towards the overall meta-score of the splatfest team represented by your choice. At the end of a splatfest you get rewards based on your performance, and if your splatfest team wins you get even more rewards.

So far the only splatfest reward that I know of are sea shells, which let you either add an extra ability sub-slot to a 1 or 2 star equipment piece, or lets you reroll all the sub abilities on an equipment piece with 3 unlocked sub abilities (you can also do this without a sea shell, but only once you hit level 20, and for a substantial coin cost).
